  • As one of a new generation of industries, biotechnology is currently spotlighted, and is creating new research and industrial areas that can be readily combined with information technology. Among them, virtual screening is a method for new drug design which uses computer simulation to virtually design active drug candidates for special disease. In this paper, we present a distributed system for virtual screening, called DVSF(Distributed Virtual Screening Facilities). DVSF is designed and developed to perform virtual screening efficiently on logically distributed idle or strategic resources in a small or medium scale laboratory.

  • This paper reports comparison between analytic and numerical simulation approaches for calculation of screening current and screening current induced field in a high temperature superconductor magnet. Bean slab model is adopted to calculate screening current and SCF analytically, while the finite element method numerically. A case study of screening current and SCF calculation are conducted with a magnet, a 7 T 68 mm cold-bore multi-width no-insulation GdBCO magnet built and tested by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Francis Bitter Magnet Laboratory. In this study, we assume the magnet is dunked in liquid nitrogen at 77 K. Furthermore, the simulation results are compared in terms of computation time and accuracy. Finally, discussion on the different methods together with the comparison between the calculations and experiment is provided.

  • Purpose. Korean American women have twice the rate of cervical cancer than white women and demonstrate low rates in participation in cervical cancer screening. This study was to describe the perceptions about cervical cancer and factors related to cervical cancer screening among Korean American women. Method. Focus group methods. Results. Five themes emerged. First, knowledge about cervical cancer; misconceptions about cervical cancer, its causes, reproductive anatomy and the treatment Second, perceived meanings of having cervical cancer; most of the women felt that cervical cancer represented a loss of femininity and existential value of woman-hood. Third, knowledge about cervical cancer screening; regular medical check-ups were necessary for early detection and prevention of cervical cancer. Forth, experiences and perceived meanings of cervical cancer screening; the participants expressed their feelings; embarrassment, fear, shame and shyness. Fifth, practices of cervical cancer screening; various intervals in participating in cervical cancer screening. But they mentioned several deterrents, language, insurance, time constraint, embarrassment, fear of the screening results, misbelief about susceptibility, lack of health prevention behavior, and lack of information written in Korean. Conclusion: Results emphasize the critical need for culturally appropriate health education to encourage participation of Korean American women in cervical cancer screening.

  • The numerical analysis on the wave screening performance of the submerged breakwater with various crown widths is presented. The fluid motion is considered as linearized two dimensional potential flow and the finite element method is used to analyze the wave screening performance of the submerged breakwater. It is found that single-submerged breakwater with large crown width shows the most effective wave screening performance and single-submerged breakwater with small crown width also shows fairly good wave screening performance but its effectiveness is less than that of single-submerged breakwater with large crown width. However, double- or triple-submerged breakwater with small crown width shows more effective wave screening performance than that of single- or double-submerged breakwater with large crown width. It is expected that the submerged breakwater with small crown width is economical because it reduces the size of structure.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of Pap smear screening of menopausal women in W city using a phenomenological methodology. The participants were 5 focus groups consisting of 37 menopausal women. They were selected using snowball sampling method. The data were collected through focus group interviews. Data were recorded and analyzed by Colazzi's method. Significant statements were extracted from the data resulting in 20 themes. These themes formed 12 clusters and 5 categories. The essential themes of the experience of cervical cancer screening emerged as : "unpleasant feelings during procedure", "ambivalent feelings about results", "be guided to seek health", "shrink from interaction with health professionals", "at ease about cervical cancer". The results indicated that cervical cancer prevention strategies for menopausal women need to be based on deep under standing of the personal experiences of Pap smear screening. In conclusion, it is suggested that more specified strategies are needed for menopausal women to encourage them to have regular screening.

  • Korea's Corona 19(COVID-19) quarantine, referred to as 'K-Quarantine', is a globally recognized quarantine system that has achieved both conflicting goals: health and economy. The quarantine system represented by 3T(Test-Trace-Treat) is not a method of blocking an area, but a method of screening and treating infected and non-infected persons. The screening center, one of the key elements of this screening treatment system, has evolved to suit the timing and situation of COVID-19, and has succeeded in initial response by conducting large-scale tests quickly and safely. By analyzing the evolution of screening centers that produced such significant results from a problem-solving point of view, it proved its meaning as a practical success case of creative problem-solving. In addition, the usefulness of TRIZ (Russian abbreviation of Theory of Solving Inventive Problem), a creative problem-solving theory, was confirmed through an analysis of actual verified cases of COVID-19 response. TRIZ is a problem-solving theory created by analyzing the regularity of invention patents, and is widely used not only in the technical field but also in the non-technical fields such as design, management, and education. The results of this study are expected to provide useful meaning and practical examples to researchers interested in system analysis and TRIZ application from a problem-solving perspective.

  • Strabismus is one of the most common disease that might be associated with vision impairment. Especially in infants and children, it is critical to detect strabismus at an early age because uncorrected strabismus may go on to develop amblyopia. To this end, ophthalmologists usually perform the Hirschberg test, which observes corneal light reflex (CLR) to determine the presence and type of strabismus. However, this test is usually done manually in a hospital, which might be difficult for patients who live in a remote area with poor medical access. To address this issue, we propose an automatic strabismus screening method that calculates the CLR ratio to determine the presence of strabismus based on image processing. In particular, the method first employs a pre-trained face detection model and a 68 facial landmarks detector to extract the eye region image. The data points located in the limbus are then collected, and the least square method is applied to obtain the center coordinates of the iris. Finally, the coordinate of the reflective light point center within the iris is extracted and used to calculate the CLR ratio with the coordinate of iris edges. Experimental results with several images demonstrate that the proposed method can be a promising solution to provide strabismus screening for patients who cannot visit hospitals.

  • Amid intensified global competition, securing high technologies is becoming a prerequisite towards achieving developed nation status. Korea has made tremendous efforts into developing technologies for decades and it has now obtained a leading position in many fields. As a result, however, Korea has become a major target of industrial espionage and not a few Korean businesses have already suffered from it. In order to effectively counter industrial espionage, this research explores the use of polygraph security screening as an internal control method through literature review, and discusses matters which need to be considered before the introduction of it into Korea, focusing on the accuracy of security screening. Since polygraph security screening generates deterrent effect by increasing certainty and celerity of punishment, it makes a valuable contribution to the control of industrial espionage. However, the most important problem with the use of the polygraph in security screening is errors of the examination. Thus, polygraph security screening should be used as a part of comprehensive security management program to reduce the possibility of errors. In addition, because factors such as countermeasures and examiner's experience are known to influence the accuracy of the examination, the issues surrounding them should also be addressed.

  • Even though phosphorus (P) is essential element for plant growth and development, it is not enough for crop production in soil. To breed more P deficient tolerance rice, screening and selection in rice population is needed. We tried to develop more simple and rough screening method for breeding of P deficient tolerance rice. In P deficient condition, tiller number was dramatically decreased among yield components in rice. Though this result, we confirmed tiller number could be the best marker in screening of P deficient tolerance rice. 480 rice genetic resources were cultivated in rice bed tray filled with P deficient soil for four weeks and each dry weight was measured. Among them, the 55 kinds of genetic resource were selected then cultivated in paddy field with 3 fertilizer conditions. Plant dry weight and tiller number in ripening stage were shown significant difference according to P condition. Plant dry weight and tiller number in ripening stage was highly correlated especially in P deficient condition. Furthermore, the tiller number in ripening stage and plant dry weight in rough screening were shown high degree correlation. Though these results, we might expect measuring of plant dry weight after cultivation in rice bed tray filled with P deficient soil could be a simple and effective screening method in selection of P deficient tolerance rice.

  • Chlorinated phenols are widely used by the chemical industry as intermediate products in synthesis and previously were frequently applied to various industry fields. Peroxidases catalyze the peroxide-dependent oxidation of a range of inorganic and organic compounds. Peroxidase was shown to mineralize a variety of recalcitrant aromatic compounds and to oxidize a number of polycyclic aromatic and phenolic compounds. Among monomeric phenolic and nonphenolic compounds, peroxidase is known to oxidize its compounds. In this study, a colorimetric assay was developed to quantitatively evaluate the peroxidase activity for rapid screening. Color products of different intensity were developed proportionally to the peroxidase activity on agar plate and 96-well plate. This method correlates well with the RP-HPLC result. Using this screening method, 12 colonies of strain was screened which survived at high concentration of 2,4-DCP (1000 ppm) and with peroxidase activity for the $7^{th}$ round screening step on agar plate. These strains were utilized 2,4-DCP as a sole carbon source and produced peroxidase. After the screening test, four of the bacteria have significant better effect of COD removal on dye waste-water. COD removal of these was from 44% to 61%, respectively.
