Development and implementation of STEAM Program based on Scratch Programming (스크래치 프로그래밍 중심의 STEAM 교육 프로그램 개발 및 적용)

  • As growing more and more interested in programming education, we need to concerned how to teach programming in school. We are presented the STEAM program based on scratch programming as a way of programming education for elementary students. We were developed STEAM program that do digital storytelling using scratch about selected science topic in order to raise interests about science and educate programming. In order to verify the effectiveness of the educational program, we analyzed the results of pre- and post-test about GALT, TTCT of experimental group and comparison group is comprised of 6th grade elementary students. In the analysis results, the education program we developed affected positive impacts on creativity, logical thinking of elementary school students.

Design and Implementation of Scratch-based Science Learning Environment Using Non-formal Learning Experience

  • In this paper, we use scratch to design and develop non-formal learning experiences that are linked with contents of secondary science textbook to educational programs. The goal of this paper is to develop a convenient and interesting program for non-formal learning in a learning environment using various smart device. Theoretical approaches to mobile education, such as smartphones, and smart education support policies continue to lead to various research efforts. Although most of the smart education systems developed for students who have difficulty in academic performance are utilized, they are limited to general students. To solve the problem, the learning environment was implanted by combining the scratch, which is an educational programming that can be easily written. The science education program proposed in this paper shows the result of process of programming using ICT device using scratch programming. In the evaluation stage, we were able to display the creations and evaluate each other, so that we could refine them more by sharing the completed ideas.

The Effect of Learning Scratch Programming on Students' Motivation and Problem Solving Ability (스크래치 프로그래밍 학습이 학습자의 동기와 문제해결력에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper propose to use a new educational programming language, Scratch, to help students' programming study. For this purpose, a course has been developed which consists of (1) strategies to motivate students and (2) Creative Problem Solving (CPS) teaching model to improve their problem solving abilities. We experimented the course with sixth-grade elementary students for 4 weeks and we could observe that the Scratch programming learning helps motivating students and improving their problem solving abilities. Based on this observation, we believe that Scratch programming can be an alternative for current programming education in elementary schools.

A Study on the EPL using Instructional Model of SW Major's Programming Class (EPL 기반의 SW전공자를 위한 프로그래밍 수업 모형에 관한 연구)

  • Although programming language is a core education area of software that is becoming increasingly important in the age of the fourth industrial revolution, as it requires logical thinking skills, it is recognized as a difficult subject even for SW major students. This difficulty occasionally causes SW major students to lose interest and confidence in their major during the introductory course of a programming language; making them change their majors, or give up their studies. In this study, we designed an instructional model using Scratch for educating C language which is a typical programming introductory language. To do this, we analyzed the concepts that can be trained by Scratch among the programming concepts supported by C language, and developed the examples of Scratch for exercising the concepts. The instructional model supports the progress model of learning first the programming concepts through Scratch and then expand the learning content into C language. We also conducted an experiment on the SW major freshman students of a local private university to verify the effectiveness of the model.

  • A programming education has favorable influence on creative / logical thinking and problem solving ability of students. However, students typically have to spend too much effort in learning basic grammar and the usage model of programming languages, which negatively affect their eagerness in learning. In this respect, we proposed to apply the 'Scratch' using the Creative Problem Solving(CPS) Teaching Model; Scratch is an easy-to-learn and intuitive Educational Programming Language(EPL) that helps improving the problem solving ability of the class. Then we verified the effect of Scratch EPL through the design of both pretest and posttest for a subject group. In summary, the CPS based Scratch EPL was shown to significantly improve the problem solving ability and also help them develop favorable attitude in programming.

  • The programming education in K-12 field is processing with conceptual approaches to obtain basic grammar not including higher knowledge processing. This is main reason that can't able to obtain the educational effects. This study aims to research the innovated methodology of programming education which can have educational effect by participating of learners with positive interest, and recognize the effect of the Scratch programming education on elementary school student's learning-flow and programming ability. As a result Scratch programming education has effect on elementary school student's improving the level of learning-flow and the programming ability.

  • Necessity of programming education is demanded according to more interested in importance of computer science. However, the existing programming education only focused on function for utilization of the commercial programs. The existing programming education doesn't meet the students' level and doesn't cause that they were interested in programming. Therefore, we applied the learning strategy based the scaffolding when we taught the scratch programming language in the elementary school and we studied the students' attitude towards programming learning. As a result, we found the good results about the general learning patterns, the performance satisfaction through learning and the interaction areas.

  • Computational Thinking(CT) is drawing attention as a core competency required for future talent in the 21st century. Software education for improving CT ability at home and abroad is in full swing. Among them, problem-solving programming education helps to improve CT ability. The CT-TDPS learning model follows the decomposition, abstraction thinking process, which modularizes complex problems, and the Agile development method, which is an iterative and incremental programming method to implement it. In this study, we tried to confirm the improvement of CT ability by applying CT-TDPS learning model to problem solving programming education using Scratch. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that in the problem solving programming education using the CT-TDPS learning model, it improved in all aspects of computing concept, computing performance, and computing perspective, which are sub-factors of CT ability. In addition, it was confirmed that there was a significant difference in the experimental group as a result of the t-test on the Dr.Scratch automatic evaluation result.

A Task Centered Scratch Programming Learning Program for Enhancing Learners' Problem Solving Abilities (문제해결력 향상을 위한 과제 중심 스크래치 프로그래밍 학습 프로그램)

  • Programming learning may help to enhance learners' complex problem solving abilities. However, it may cause excessive cognitive loads for learners. Therefore, selection of programming tools and design of teaching and learning strategies to minimize the learners' cognitive loads and to maximize the learning effects. A task centered Scratch programming learning program was developed to enhance problem solving abilities of middle school students. And then, we implemented the developed program in middle school programming classes and analysed the educational effects of the developed program. We found that the developed program was helpful in enhancing learners' problem solving abilities, especially in the element of 'troubleshooting', which explains ability of error detecting and correcting.

Evaluation of Computational Thinking through Code Analysis of Elementary School Students' Scratch Projects (초등학생의 스크래치 프로젝트 코드 분석을 통한 컴퓨팅 사고력 평가)

  • In order to improve computational thinking, elementary schools have been using 'Scratch' to provide basic programming education. However, the study on evaluation of computational thinking is at an early stage. Therefore, this study evaluated the conceptual level of computational thinking using the scratch code analyzing. For this, Dr. Scratch was used to analyze 179 scratch projects. The results showed that the conceptual level of computational thinking of most elementary students was at the developing level, and that it varied according to gender and production style, showed the lowest level of logic and abstraction, and improved computational thinking during programming. This study is meaningful in that it provides implications for the improvement of teaching methods and self-directed evaluation in learning.
