  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute has been doing researches on the hypersonic propulsion system and hypersonic wind-tunnel since 2000 and started scramjet engine researches from 2005. Total 5 kinds of scramjet engine were designed and tested and two of them were hydrocarbon-fueled scramjet engine. For verifying the own characteristics of each components like the intake and combustor, several component tests were done at the KSPC of JAXA and KARI. In this paper, current scramjet engine research activities of KARI will be described.

  • For the development of Scramjet engine technology, intake designing processes are investigated. The basic geometry is determined by the inviuld relation such as shock wave relations and geometric relations. Furthermore, bleed duct is installed for preventing boundary layer development and shock wave impingement. Performance of the designed intake is validated by numerical analysis. As a result, double- wedge intake showed better characteristics in total pressure recovery than single-wedge intake.

  • Intake start characteristics of a Mach 5 scramjet engine were investigated experimentally. Intake unstart was observed. The model-facility interaction or excessive internal contraction ratio were attributed to this unstart. Intake start was achieved by changing the model position to remove the model-facility interaction, and by modifying the cowl to give smaller contraction ratio.

  • In order to perform the scramejt engine intake ground test using the Scramjet Engine Test Facility(SETF) of the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. we introduced the test availability check procedure that is generally conducted. The design process of the newly manufactured Mach 5 nozzle for the scramjet intake test was summarized, a device for checking the core flow distribution of the nozzle was explained, and the core flow test analysis results were written. Through a series of test results, it was confirmed that the intake was located in the new Mach 5 nozzle core.

  • The performance analysis test of the scramjet engine intake was conducted under the Mach 5 condition of the scramjet engine test facility, a free-jet ground test facility of the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. A pitot/static pressure rake installed at the rear of the isolator was designed and manufactured to measure the total pressure recovery rate and mass capture ratio, which are typical performance factors of the scramjet engine intake. The effect of the rake mounted at the rear of the isolator on the intake, the performance analysis measured by the rake, and the change in wall static pressure distribution according to the angle of attack were performed. Finally, the point at which the intake unstart occurred was confirmed by using the rear back pressure adjusting device, which simulates pressure rise in the combustor, and the results are summarized in this paper.

  • Model SCRamjet Engine intake is designed for Ground test. The designed Intake provides hot and slow flow with the combustor. Flow separation is controlled by the shock wave segregation based on the Korekegi criteria. With Kantrowitz limit analysis, side wall cut out region is also set for the self start.

  • A scramjet engine intake model was tested with a storage air heater type hypersonic wind tunnel. In test results, there is no large performance change with the variation of the sidewall configurations. In the isolator performance analysis, pressure distribution of oblique shock train and normal shock train was observed. Unstart limit of the model was also confirmed.

  • To identify the detailed 3D flow characteristics of a model scramjet engine, a unified 3D numerical analysis was performed. The numerical domain of concern includes the entire flow path of the model scramjet engine extending from the intake to the nozzle exhaust. Turbulent models($k-{\omega}$ SST and low Reynolds number k-e with Sarkar model) were applied with comparison of experiment result. Intake side wall's effect on flow characteristics was analyzed in view points of flow quality at inlet duct and near the flame holder as well. The code is paralleled with multi-block feature using MPI(Massage Passing Interface) library to speed up the 3D calculation.

  • Scramjet engine is one of the most promising propulsion systems for future transport. For the ground test with T4 shock tunnel, model scramjet engine is designed. Design flight Mach number is 7.6 and flight altitude is 30km. Engine intake is designed by Levenberg-Marquardt optimization method and Korkegi relation. Furthermore, cowl cut out region is installed by the rule of Kantrowitz limit. Inside the combustor, cavity type flame holder is installed. Cavity is designed by Rayleigh line relation and PSR model. Numerical analysis is performed for the design confirm.

  • An efficient performance model for scramjet engines has been proposed for scramjet performance design. In supersonic air intake design, the compression angles of the wedge were determined to maximize the total pressure recovery of the intake based on Oswatisch criterion. Both combustion models of chemical equilibrium and finite-rate chemistry model are implemented, and compared each model with the results by Starkey for Waverider engine configuration. Finally, the performance model of concern has been confirmed by conducting performance analysis with hypothetical mission profile and design conditions.
