The Effects of Verbal Analogy Activities as Scaffolding on the Science Achievement and Science Attitude of Elementary Students (비계 설정으로서의 언어적 비유 활동이 초등학생의 과학 학업 성취도와 과학 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of verbal analogy activities on science achievement and science attitude of elementary students. Students consolidated lessons by making short sentences with core words that a teacher gave for scaffolding instruction. Many researches about analogies have been conducted in science education. However, most of them considered analogy as learning tools, whereas this research considers analogy as a cognitive process. To see the effects of verbal analogy activities, two groups were selected from 6th grade elementary school students; one was an experimental group working with the student-generated verbal analogy and the other was a control group with teacher-centered and textbook-centered activities. Science achievement, scientific attitudes, attitudes toward science and retention were tested after the treated lessons.

  • In this research, we have carried out an experiment with grade 10 students. Students will be choosing their roles and creating their own script in relation to the environmental problems such as the seriousness of global wanning and the mutation of ecosystem. Throughout this process, they will come up with a solution to the problem In addition, we will assess students' knowledge achievement as well as the changes in attitudes toward environment, and analyze whether the role-play method of education is efficient or not. According to the research result, we have confirmed that the method of role-play as a education tool was more efficient than the traditional lecturing method. Students experienced higher rate of knowledge acquisition and more optimistic effects on their attitudes toward the mutation of ecosystem and also the seriousness of the global wanning. Students also pointed out in the interview that the role-play allowed them to share their thoughts with other classmates, which were not carried out frequently in the traditional education system In addition, each member of groups could participate cooperatively with teammates, which ultimately helped them to develop scientific and introspective ways of thinking.

  • Purpose: This study measures the influence of facilitating conditions on employees' attitudes towards the adoption of big data analytics by selected medical aid organizations in Durban. In the health care sector, there are various sources of big data such as patients' medical records, medical examination results, and pharmacy prescriptions. Several organizations take the benefits of big data to improve their performance and productivity. Research design, data, and methodology: A survey research strategy was conducted on some selected medical aid organizations. A non-probability sampling and the purposive sampling technique were adopted in this study. The collected data was analysed using version 23 of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Results: the results show that the "facilitating conditions" have a positive influence on employees' attitudes in the adoption of big data analytics Conclusions: The findings of this study provide empirical and scientific contributions of the facilitating conditions issues regarding employee attitudes toward big data analytics adoption. The findings of this study will add to the body of knowledge in this field and raise awareness, which will spur further research, particularly in developing countries.

The Effects of Research Project Program on the Science Process Skills and Science-Related Attitudes of High School Students (과제연구 프로그램이 고등학생들의 과학 탐구능력 및 과학에 관련된 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of research project program of science process skills and science-related attitudes for high school students. This study were accompanied by 72 junior students of G High School who were reorganized as students whose research subject was closely related to chemistry. These students went through 28 periods of 14 sessions of research project program, were tested before and after the study on their science process skills and science-related attitudes. A simple questionnaire afterwards to get their thoughts on this program, was surveyed. The results are as follows. First, the research project program was effective in the science process skills (p<0.01). There was a statistically meaningful difference in the subcategory of deduction, setting up hypotheses, finding variables, building experiments, graphing and interpreting data. Although there was an increase in the average scores of prediction, operant definition, and generalization factors, it was not statistically meaningful (p>0.05). Second, the research project program showed an increase in the post-test of the science-related attitudes but was not statistically meaningful (p>0.05). In terms of subcategoty, the social importance of science, criterion of scientists, application of scientific attitude, and enjoyment of science classes were statistically meaningful (p<0.05). Third, according to the survey of research project program, there was an increase in creating a research problem and solving it by oneself as well as in participating with other teammates to solve a problem. But the most difficult thing was when the experiment failed during the research was processing. The curiosity and interest, towards objects around all lives and science classes after the program done, were increased.

High School Students' Environmental Science Literacy for Water and Attitudes toward Environment (물에 관한 고등학생들의 환경 과학적 소양과 태도)

  • The present study aimed to understand high school students' environmental literacy for water and their attitudes toward environment. This study was conducted during the spring of the 2010 academic year with the participation of 123 students from a public international high school located in Seoul. The Environmental Science Literacy for Water test and the Revised New Ecological Paradigm scale were administered, and the data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and content analysis. The high school students in this study put strong emphasis on encouraging others to conserve water resources. This belief, however, was not aligned with self-recognition of their own roles in water supply shortages and other problematic water-use behavior. They also had difficulties in understanding the invisible part of matter transformations in water systems. Nevertheless, they showed favorable attitudes toward environmental conservation. In conclusion, the researchers suggest recognizing our own water problems and narrowing the gap between environmental and scientific knowledge of water and actual attitudes about the environment through curricular incorporation of interdisciplinary environmental science literacy into school science.

The Effect on Science Inquiry Ability, Scientific Attitude and Science Achievement of the Elementary School Students According to the Input time of Web-Based Instruction Programs (웹기반 학습 프로그램의 투입 시기가 초등학생의 과학탐구능력, 과학적태도 및 학업성취도에 미치는 효과)

  • This study is aimed at exploring the effects on Science Inquiry Ability, Scientific Attitude and Science Achievement of the Elementary School Students according to the Input time of Web-Based Instruction Programs. As the object of the study, seventy-two students were selected from three classes in the fifth grade of Y Elementary School located in the city of T, Gyungsangnam-do. They were classified into the three groups such as Group A (Class 1), Group B (Class 2) and Group C (Class 3). The author threw web-based instruction programs into the begining of a unit, during a unit, the end of a unit to each group, and explored the effects. The results of this study were as follows: First, for the learning effect of science inquiry ability, it was indicated that there was the highest effect in the case of throwing web-based instruction programs into during a unit, but the effect reduced a little in the case of throwing them into the end of a unit. Secondly, the scientific attitudes tended to be reduced in the case of throwing them into during a unit, but there did not occur statistically significant improvement. Thirdly, the degree of improvement of the science achievement tended to be highest in the case of throwing them into the end of a unit. Such findings indicated that the time of throwing in web-based instruction programs affected science inquiry ability, scientific attitude and science achievement of elementary school students. Thus, it will be said that teachers need to teach their students with the class strategies of considering various scientific elements revealed at the time of throwing in web-based instruction programs.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate science high-school students' creativity and scientific attitude when an integrated science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) project themed 'lighting of quantum dot solution' was applied to them. The subjects were a one team composed of 3 students in the 11th grade desiring to participate in the Korea Science Exhibition. They began with a scientific inquiry related to the physical properties of the QD solution and then gradually showed the process of expansion of their ideas into the integration of engineering, technology, and mathematics. Also, during the process, they showed problem solving ability and scientific attitudes, such as cooperation, endurance, and satisfaction of accomplishment.

Development of Geological Field Courses and the Effect of Field Study on the Affective Domain in Science and on Achievement of Students (야외지질학습장의 개발과 활용에 따른 학생들의 과학에 대한 정의적 영역과 학업 성취에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop geological field sites for open ended education and inquiry learning, and to find the influence of field study on the affective domain in science and the achievement. As for the field sites, we used the areas ranging from Chaeseokgang- of Kyeokpo, in Buan, to around Bangsanje from Naejang-dong in Jeongeup to Ssangchi-myun in Sunchang-kun, Jeolla North Province. The affective domain in science is composed of three parts-cognition of science, interests toward science, and the scientific attitudes. to evaluate the stage of the achievement, we used questionnaire composed by 25 items. While the control group does not show any change in three parts of the affective domain, the experimental group shows positive changes, from 2.44 to 2.37 (cognition of science), from 3.15 to 3.08 (interests toward science), and from 2.91 to 2.74 (scientific attitudes) on Likert Scale. Also the score arranged by the analysis of covariate shows that the experimental group is more positive than the control group by 0.12 point in cognition of science, by 0.15 point in interests toward science, and by 0.23 point in scientific attitudes. In terms of the stage of achievement, the score of the experimental group, which is arranged by analysis of covariate, is 7.68 higher than that of the control group, on maximum of 100.

The Effect of Physics Instruction Using Infographics Based on Visual Thinking in High School (고등학교에서 시각적 사고에 기반한 인포그래픽 활용 물리 수업의 효과)

  • In this study, we tried to find the effects of carrying out infographics instruction based on visual thinking with the infographics materials presented in physics textbooks targeting specialized vocational high school students. Thus, 60 students were divided into the experimental group and the control group, the experimental group had 25 classes composed of 'infographics concept formation, infographics understanding activity, and infographics configuration activity', on the other hand, the control group were instructed by lecture-type class. The results of this study are as follows: First, features of the infographics created by the students include changes in types of presentation from 'simple arrangement' to 'simple reconfiguration' and from 'illustration' to 'comparative analysis', which were made by the visual thinking of the students activated in accordance with the increase of their configuration times. Second, instruction by using infographics, visual thinking significantly improved in the level of understanding, visibility, usability, and communicability. Third, after instruction using infographics, the mean score of the experimental group's achievement significantly improved. Fourth, there was a significant improvement in the area of 'normality of scientist, attitude on scientific inquiry, and scientific attitude' in the test of attitudes toward science. From the analysis results, we could conclude that instruction using infographics enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and communication capability by improving visual thinking abilities, which have a positive impact on academic achievement and attitudes toward science.

Development and Application of Practice-Centered Science Camp Programs (체험중심 과학 캠프 프로그램의 개발 및 적용)

  • In this study the authors developed the practice-centered science camp program which was based on the review of out-of-school scientific activities and the standards of HASA (Hands, Head and Heart At Science Activity) curriculum emphasizing on hands-operated skills. After applying this science camp program we confirmed the validity of the program based on the students' responses at the camp. Using students' reports written during the camp and their essays written on the web-site after camp, we analyzed students' responses into four categories; knowledge, inquiry, hands-operated skills, and scientific attitudes. Also we evaluated the components of the science camp programs and students' perception of science and science-related attitudes using a questionnaire before and after the camp. In terms of contents and activities for the development and application of science camp, our result showed that the science camp program should be complemented to connect real life with high-tech science and include more activities related hands-operated skills and competition activities evoking constructive competitive spirits. In conclusion, we can infer that the agencies which take parts of the national policy enterprise related science education, such as Scientific Education Research Center, must develop and specialize science camp program with more competitive human resource system and economic support. Science educators should give more attention on joining school science education with out-of-school science education, which might have a positive effect on students' attitudes and participation toward science.
