Students' Voluntary Teaching Activities in Science Schools

  • Student members from The University of Tokushima worked voluntarily at the science school for elementary school children and high school students under the support of Japan Science and Technology Agency. The teaching classes for the science school were held in 2010 as follows: (1) Science handicraft class for children on "Wonder in light, sound, temperature and force", (2) Family Science School for children and parents on "Measurement of length, temperature, weight and energy", (3) "Tatara steel making" for high school students, (4) "Wave motion in strings" for high school students. This paper describes how the students prepared the teaching materials and what they obtained from the teaching activities.

Physicochemical and organoleptic properties of hot-air dried oriental melon slices prepared using different physical pretreatments

  • The oriental melon poses challenges in terms of long-term storage and distribution. Addressing these issues requires an extension of the storage life through appropriate processing. In this study, pretreated hot-air dried oriental melon slices (steamed and freeze-thawed) were prepared, and their physicochemical and organoleptic properties were examined. The control group (CON) consisted of hot-air dried oriental melon slices without pretreatment, while the steamed group (STG) and freeze-thawed group (FTG) consisted of hot-air dried oriental melon slices pretreated using steaming and freeze-thawing methods, respectively. The moisture contents detected in the CON, STG, and FTG groups ranged from 15.96% to 27.30%, with variations of 7.53 to 8.40 °Brix for the soluble solid contents. The CON group showed the highest Hunter color value for lightness (L*) and the lowest value for redness (a*). The texture profile analysis revealed the highest hardness and chewiness in the order of STG > CON > FTG. Considerable differences were observed in springiness and adhesiveness in the FTG group compared to the other groups. The organoleptic evaluation showed that the CON group had the highest sensory scores for overall preference. These findings indicate that the properties of hot-air dried oriental melon slices were influenced by physical pretreatments and that manufacturing these slices without pretreatment is the most effective method in terms of processing simplicity and cost efficiency.

과학중점학교 교육과정 운영이 정의적 영역 및 비교과 체험활동 만족도에 미치는 영향 (An Influence of Curriculum of Science Core School on the the Affective Domain and Non-subject Hands-on Activities Satisfaction)

  • Under this research, the survey is made on the definitive influence of the first-year education process of the science focus school for each of humanities, science and science core courses and the level of satisfaction of the non-curriculum experiment activity program for each course to find out the effectiveness of the first-year education process of the science focus school. For this purpose, this research has set three research issues. First, By clarifying the research result through the first-year education curriculum for science core school, noticeable change was observed for science focus school students through the change of attitude related to science for each desired course of students. Second, in the self-directed learning characteristics change, there was meaningful change for each desired field of students. Students hoping for humanities curriculum had great help in improvement of creative thinking for openness, creativeness and the like, but the influence was slightly insufficient in the moderation and control capability on themselves in learning attitude. Third, By analyzing the research result comprehensively, the first-year education curriculum for science core school provides high level of tailored science learning for the science focus school students and the level of satisfaction for students was significantly high.

Effects of the Substitution of Mischmetal for PrNd on the Microstructures and Magnetic Properties of Rapidly Quenched (MM)PrNd-Fe-B Nanocrystalline Magnets

  • Mischmetal of Bayan Obo ore was utilized to prepare the high performance $(Pr_{7.34}Nd_{21.86})_{1-x}MM_xFe_{68.7}Al_{0.1}Cu_{0.12}Co_{0.88}B$ ribbons using melt-spinning method. Phase composition and magnetic properties were investigated at room temperature. The ribbons mainly consist of $R_2Fe_{14}B$ phase in isotropic nanostructure. Both coercivity and maximum energy product decrease with the increase of MM content. The magnetic parameters of the ribbons with MM = 20 % in mass are $B_r=7.38kGs$, $H_{cj}=13.66kOe$, $(BH)_{max}=11.81MGOe$. Henkel plots were applied to demonstrate the exchange coupling interaction between grains.

중등학교 과학 교사의 교수유형에 따른 학생들의 과학 불안도 (Secondary School Students' Science Anxiety in Relation to Their Science Teachers' Teaching Styles in Korea)

  • The purpose of this study was to survey secondary school science teachers' teaching styles and to recognize students' science anxiety about science teachers' different teaching styles. One hundred seventy-four science teachers and 2,122 students participated. The teaching style questionnaire and the science anxiety measurement scale (SAMS) with teaching style were administered to teachers and students, respectively. Teaching styles were analyzed in terms of teacher's individual variables, such as gender and school level. The science anxiety related to each teaching style was analyzed and compared in terms of students' gender and school level. The results were as follows. First, the secondary school science teachers were classified into four types based on their teaching styles: expert, provider, facilitator and enabler. Most teachers fell under the expert style category and the least under enabler style. This indicated that numerous science teachers in secondary school employ a teacher-directed style rather than a student-centered style in class. Second, students felt the highest science anxiety with experts and the lowest science anxiety with enablers. The students' science anxiety showed statistically significant differences with different teaching styles (p<.05). Even though female students felt higher science anxiety than male students towards all four teaching styles, no statistically significant gender differences were found. Middle school students were more influenced by teaching style than high school students. Some suggestions were made for teachers to reduce students' science anxiety in classes based on results.

The Investigation of Ni Thin Film by Atomic Layer Deposition

  • Low resistance Ni thin films for using NiSi formation and metallization by atomic layer deposition (ALD) method have been studied. ALD temperature window is formed between $200^{\circ}C\;and\;250^{\circ}C$ with deposition rate of $1.25{\AA}$/cycle. The minimum resistance of deposited Ni films shows $4.333\;{\Omega}/\square$ on the $SiO_2/Si$ substrate by $H_2$ direct purging process. The reason of showing the low resistance is believed to be due to format ion of the $Ni_3C$ phase by residual carbon in Bis-Ni The deposited film exhibits excellent step coverage in the trench having 1(100 nm) : 16 (1.6 um) aspect ratio.

과학전람회 작품 중 중학교 과학분야의 분석 (Analysis of Middle School-Science Parts among the Products of Nation-Wide Science Exhibition)

  • The study is to analyze the middle school-science parts among the products of nation-wide science exhibition for eleven years recently and the results of compared to the content of science-textbooks of middle school. The number of observation in the student parts among the products of nation-wide science exhibition was the highest in all methods studied, whereas, most teachers surveyed experiments in their products. The mean Shannon's diversity index (DI) was same trend for students and teachers. There was a non-significant difference of the methods in students and teacher groups according to years and the association between students and teachers were closely connected with methods. The correlation between the content of students' products and texts of middle-school was highly positive for earth science, chemistry, and biology, whereas physics showed negative correlation.

초등교사의 과학 교수에 대한 자기 이미지 조사 (Investigating Elementary School Teachers' Self-Images of Science Teaching)

  • 이 연구에서는 Draw-A-Science-Teacher-Test Checklist(DASTT-C)를 이용하여 국내 초등교사들의 과학 교수에 대한 자기 이미지의 특징을 조사했다. 서울시, 경기도, 강원도 지역의 초등교사 178명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시했다. 연구 결과, 국내 초등교사들의 과학교수에 대한 자기 이미지는 4개의 과학 과목(물리, 화학, 생물, 지구과학)에서 모두 '학생 중심'보다는 '교사중심'인 경향이 강했다. 이는 초등교사들의 과학 교수관이 구성주의보다는 전통주의적인 경향이 강할 가능성을 시사한다. 따라서 구성주의에 기초한 예비 및 현직 교사교육과정을 효과적으로 설계하는 방안을 마련할 필요가 있다.
