  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors with nursing students's confidence in performing fundamental nursing skills. The focus was on professionalism and self-efficacy. Method: For the sample 258 fourth graders of nursing students were recruited in two universities located in Gyeongnam or Ulsan. Data were analyzed using t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: The mean score for confidence in performing fundamental nursing skills was $3.71{\pm}0.58$. Nursing professionalism and self-efficacy were positively correlated with confidence in performing fundamental nursing skills. Analysis using multiple regression showed that 27% of factors predicting confidence in performance of fundamentals of nursing practice (F=16.43, p<.001) included nursing professionalism (${\beta}=.37$, p<.001), self-expression (${\beta}=.15$, p=.009), and self-efficacy (${\beta}=.14$, p=.029). Conclusion: Findings show that nursing professionalism is one of the major factors influencing confidence in performing fundamental nursing skills. In order to improve the confidence in performing fundamental nursing skills, it is necessary to establish effective educational strategies that firmly enhance nursing professionalism and improve self-efficacy in nursing students.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Danjeon Breathing Exercise (DBE) on vital capacity, physical fitness, anxiety and depression among older adults. Methods: This study employed the nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The experimental group participated in a 12-week DBE program. Vital capacity and physical fitness were measured with a health measurement system (HELMAS). Anxiety and depression were measured with SCL-90-R-K. Data were collected from 37 community-dwelling older adults (experimental group=21, control group=16) in the Seoul metropolitan area. The data were analyzed by $x^2$-test, Mann-Whitney test and ANCOVA. Results: The experimental group taking DBE reported significant increases in flexibility than the control group, but differences in vital capacity and balance were not significant. Older adults taking DBE showed significant decreases in the anxiety and depression levels. Conclusion: A DBE program may be a useful nursing intervention for older adults to improve their flexibility and to reduce anxiety and depression.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of team-based simulation training (TBST) on patient safety confidence and nursing competency among nursing students. Methods: This study used a one group pretest-posttest design. Among the senior nursing students enrolled in an academic course in one nursing school, the convenience sample of 114 students was recruited. Participants received 15-session TBST (2 hours per session) over 8 weeks and completed the patient safety confidence and nursing competency scales, and a questionnaire of participants' responses to TBST. Data were analyzed using a descriptive statistics test, a paired t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: The results of this study showed that patient safety confidence and nursing competency significantly improved after TBST and there was a positive correlation between these variables. Conclusion: The findings indicate that TBST is effective for improving nursing students' patient safety confidence and nursing competency, and thus, team-based strategies can be useful to attain the goals of nursing education. Furthermore, the results of this study suggest further research to refine the relations between patient safety and nursing competency.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify contents and trends of Korean nursing doctoral dissertations in terms of research methodology and theoretical characteristics. Methods: The design of the study was descriptive study and a total of 1,089 quantitative studies completed between 1982 and 2010 were reviewed using the analytical framework developed by the researchers. Results: The majority of studies utilized the experimental design (51.5%) and the others were survey design (38.8%) and methodological design (5.0%). Study subjects were shown as patients (45%), care givers (11.2%), ordinary persons (40.6%) and others (3.2%). There were growing trends in experimental design and patients as subjects. The prevailing data collection settings were hospitals (45.8%) and community (27.8%). The theoretical frameworks that studies were based on were the existing theories (37%) and a newly developed theoretical framework by a researcher (25.2%). a framework derived from other studies by the researcher (25.2%). Majority of studies (78.5%) employed a single theory as a theoretical framework. However, 31.8% of studies had no theoretical framework based on. Conclusion: Findings of this study provided the opportunities to shed new light on the current status of Korean doctoral dissertation and to deliberate on the future direction of nursing studies in Korea.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the current status of evidence-based research, education, and practice, and to suggest a directions for the future development of evidence-based nursing. Methods: To examine the current status of evidence-based nursing research, experimental research among studies published in the Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing from 2008 to 2010 were analyzed. We suggested a direction for the future development of evidence-based research based on the analysis and literature reviews. We also suggested a direction for the future development of evidence-based education and practice based on literature reviews. Results: The results showed that designs and methods of studies were insufficient to use evidences derived from the studies in terms of evidence-based research, and experimental studies consistent with themes were found to be deficient. In the future, the methods and rationale for the design of experimental studies need to be clearer In addition, a test for intervention effects through repetitive studies and a connection between the intervention effects and a protocol for clinical practice will be required. In terms of evidence-based education, curriculum revision and development of teaching methods including contents related to evidence-based practice and research methodology in undergraduate and graduate programs will be required. Evidence-based practice in Korea was less actively done than with that of foreign countries. Some large hospitals have recently attempted systemic activities to promote evidence-based nursing practice in clinical settings. To activate evidence-based practice, the perception of nurses for evidence-based practice needs to be changed and support for education and administration of the program is required. Also, evidence-based practice guidelines, protocols, and assessment tools need to be developed. Conclusion: Evidence-based nursing in Korea is in the process of evolving. To realize evidence-based nursing, we need to develop nursing science based on evidences of closer communication and cooperation in terms of nursing research, education, and practice.

For this study, the analytical theory of Benner's Interpretive Phenomenology was applied and the research question was 'How do the nursing students to be cared in the teaching-learning process of nursing education?' All 64 junior and senior nursing students who volunteered for this study were interviewed. The data was collected by open-ended audiotaped interview or written descriptions of situations they had experienced with a caring faculty member. All the contents of interview were recorded while interviewing with the each participants from the April 1998 to September 2000. The conclusions, obtained from the study on experiences to be cared of nursing students, were as follows ; 1. The nursing students considered the relationship with professor as very important matter. 2. The significant and important themes to nursing student be cared in the teaching-learning process of nursing education were Concern, Support, Information and Acceptance. 3. The result of this study explained the content and stage of nursing education applying 4 themes, therefore its practical use as material of nursing education was considered. Based on this study, the practical use of this results as nursing education data and the experimental study for measuring the effect of caring in the teaching-learning process of nursing education were suggested.
