Assessing Middle School Students' Polar Literacy (중학생의 극지 소양 평가)

  • This study analyzed students' polar literacy in an effort to promote polar education based on its high educational value. The polar literacy test items developed for this study consisted of questions about knowledge, skills, attitudes, and beliefs about the polar region, as well as background variables of students. The final test items, which were revised and supplemented several times through the preliminary test, were applied to 323 eighth graders in South Korea. We analyzed the response characteristics of the polar literacy questions for all students. Students were grouped into those with a global citizenship perspective and those with a pragmatic perspective, according to the viewpoint of polar issues and their polar literacy. Analysis showed that the students had a high understanding of climate change and living things in the polar regions, but had a very low understanding of ice, which is a key component of the polar regions. Moreover, they were unable to approach the Earth system thinking when dealing with polar issues. In addition, the global citizenship group had a higher intellectual understanding and deeper sympathy of the polar problem than the pragmatic group. This study is meaningful in that the survey results present a specific direction for future polar education.

The Education Model of Liberal Arts to Improve the Artificial Intelligence Literacy Competency of Undergraduate Students (대학생의 AI 리터러시 역량 신장을 위한 교양 교육 모델)

  • In the future, artificial intelligence (AI) technology is expected to become a general-purpose technology (GPT), and it is predicted that AI competency will become an essential competency. Several nations around the world are fostering experts in the field of AI to achieve technological proficiency while working to develop the necessary infrastructure and educational environment. In this study, we investigated the status of software education at the liberal arts level at 31 universities in Seoul, along with precedents from domestic and foreign AI education research. Based on this, we concluded that an AI literacy education model is needed to link software education at the liberal arts level with professional AI education. And we classified 20 AI-related lectures released in the KOCW according to the AI literacy competencies required; based on the results of this classification, we propose a model for AI literacy education in the liberal arts for undergraduate students. The proposed AI literacy education model may be considered as AI·SW convergence to experience AI along with literacy in the humanities, deviating from the existing theoretical and computer-science-based approach. We expect that our proposed AI literacy education model can contribute to the proliferation of AI.

Development of Korean Version of European Health Literacy Survey (HLS-EU-Q47) and Applied to the Elderly (한국판 건강문해력 측정도구(HLS-EU-Q47) 개발 및 노인 대상 적용)

  • Objective : This study aimed to develop a Korean version of the HLS-EU-Q47 that deals with the concept of health literacy based on the understanding, apply/use, process/appraisal, and access/obtain to health information. The purpose of this study is to confirm the level of comprehensive health literacy of the elderly in Korea using this tool. Methods : After going through the Korean interpretation process of HLS-EU-Q47, the items were confirmed through content validity verification by experts. The completed Korean-HLS-EU-Q47 (K-HLS-EU-Q47) was applied to 254 elderly people in the local community to analyze the degree of internal consistency and reliability. Furthermore, a comparative analysis based on the general variables was conducted. Results : The internal consistency of this tool for the elderly yielded Cronbach's 𝛼 of .81~.91, indicating a high level of reliability. There was a difference in health literacy according to sex and age based on general characteristics. Men had higher health literacy than women, and with increasing age, health literacy decreased. Conclusion : In this study, the K-HLS-EU-Q47 was developed to assess the comprehensive health literacy level of the elderly in Korea. It is expected that the search for ways to maintain a healthier life for the elderly through understanding the health literacy levels of the elderly using the results of this study will become more active.

A Study on Information Literacy Education Program of Medical Library: Focused on C University Medical Library (의학도서관 정보이용교육 프로그램 연구: C대학교 의학도서관을 중심으로)

  • This study aims to develop more user-oriented information literacy education for medical libraries in Korea. For this purpose, we benchmarked some advanced models in and out of Korea, and examined a case of C medical library which is medium size in Korea. Especially, we looked into the actual condition of information literacy education of C medical library and the information need of its users. We suggested some ideas to construct the programs for information literacy education of medical libraries in Korea. Especially, we proposed some considerations, contents and flow for the programs. The results of this study can be useful references whenever each medical library in Korea will start or make up for its information literacy program.

Depression Health Literacy and Help-seeking Intention of the Aged Receiving Customized Home Visiting Health Care Services (맞춤형 방문건강관리 대상 노인의 우울 건강정보이해능력과 도움요청의도)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand levels of both mental health literacy of depression and intention of help-seeking, and then to identify the relationship of them in Korean older adults. Methods: Participants in this cross-sectional survey were 395 persons over 65 years old receiving customized home visiting health care services at Chungnam province. Data were collected through interviews by visiting nurses in 2011. Results: The proportion of participants with depression was 61.8% ($6.7{\pm}3.6$). 78.2% of subjects appeared to have help-seeking intention for solving depression. The proportions of participants with ability to recognize depression was 69.1%. Although the level about knowledge and belief in self-help interventions were varied according to questionnaires, subjects understood self-help intervention of smoking accurately (86.3%) and physical activity (85.5%). Ability to recognize depression, knowledge and belief about self-help managements, and opinion of medication for treatment among health literacy variables measured in this study were related to help-seeking intention. In addition, women, visual impairment, and lower depression scores were related to help-seeking intention. Conclusion: Results demonstrate that it is necessary to improve depression health literacy to manage effectively depression of vulnerable elderly in communities. These results could be used in developing mental health literacy programs.

An Analysis on the Status Quo of International Students' Media Information Literacy in Social Network Environment (소셜 네트워크 환경에서 국내 외국인 유학생의 미디어 정보 리터러시 현황분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the level of Media Information Literacy of international students in K-university, who attend the courses in which the classes are delivered only in English. A survey was carried out to find out the level of media information literacy. In order to verify the validity and reliability of the measurement result gathered from the responses, an item analysis was carried out with SPSS21.0, a statistics analysis software, and the diversity of utilizing media information literacy was also measured according to the factors of each analysand group. The analysis result gathered through ${\chi}^2-test$, a frequency analysis tool, shows that international students use domestic media information literacy mainly for daily life activities such as the internet shopping and the bank transaction.

Effects of Simulation Education with Problem-based Learning on Information Literacy, Self-directed Learning Ability, and Academic Self-efficacy of Nursing Students (문제중심학습기반 시뮬레이션 실습교육이 간호대학생의 정보활용능력, 자기주도적 학습능력, 학업적 효능감에 미치는 효과)

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effects of simulation education with problem-based learning (SIM-PBL) on information literacy, self-directed learning ability, and academic self-efficacy of nursing students. The subjects were 81 fourth-year nursing students attending a university in Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. SIM-PBL was provided once per week (150 minutes each) for four weeks, and a structured questionnaire was used to survey information literacy, self-directed learning ability, and academic self-efficacy before and after educational training. After completing the four-week program, abilities in the sub-items of information literacy, such as information integration (${\acute{p}}=.030$), information expression (${\acute{p}}=.003$), and information ethics (${\acute{p}}=.016$) were improved. However, no differences in self-directed learning ability and academic self-efficacy were noted. Findings confirmed that SIM-PBL is an effective teaching method for improving the information literacy of nursing students. Therefore, it is necessary to come up with an SIM-PBL education plan for utilizing reliable and useful information ethically.

  • This paper examines the necessity and direction of digital literacy education as university education in the AI era. Digital literacy can be considered universal education about everyday culture in a digital environment, and its scope is expanding to cultivate the competencies necessary for citizens of a digital society, rather than simply the ability to use digital devices. In this paper, the university liberal arts curriculum has strengthened the information literacy area to reflect the changes of the times, but it is presented as a problem that it is still focused on the technical aspects of learning how to use digital devices and specific programs. It was suggested that the direction of digital literacy education in universities should not be limited to the technical and instrumental aspects of using digital devices, but that it would be desirable to focus on digital ethics considering the social impacts that may arise from the use of digital devices.

An Analysis of Relationship Between Self-Cognition Level of Information Literacy and Library Anxiety (정보활용능력 인지 수준과 도서관 불안 간의 관계 분석)

  • The study analyzed the relationship between self-cognition level of information literacy(SCLIL) and library anxiety(LA). SCLIL was 3.72 point, LA was 2.47 point, and these results are similar to previous studies. SCLIL and LA are correlated each other significantly(r=r=-0.493, p<0.05). Higher SCLIL leads to lower LA. Also, the study found the main factors of LA was lack of methods to access information', 'lack of confidence in evaluating the information's relevance.' For those who are going to major in Library and Information Science, it is found that they have less LA and lower SCLIL compared to those who are not willing to major in Library and Information Science, and this shows a tendency to downplay their own abilities, while tending a more positive image of libraries. Based on the results, recommendations were made to use social and psychological standard tests in order to elaborately and diversely reflect individual information user's psychological aspect.

A Case Study on the Relationship between Information Literacy Skills and Critical Thinking Dispositions of High School Students (고등학생의 정보활용능력과 비판적 사고성향의 관계에 대한 사례 연구)

  • This study aims to demonstrate the importance of information literacy instructions by showing effects of information literacy skills on critical thinking dispositions among high school students. We collected 761 survey responses from high school students and conducted multiple regression analysis to examine the relationships between the two variables. The findings show that (1) students' information search skills affect their pursuit of truth, openness, inquiring mind, and objectivity, (2) the information analytic skills influence the levels of pursuit of truth, openness, and objectivity, (3) the information presentation and delivery skills affect the levels of inquiring mind, organization, and self-trust, and, (4) the information evaluation skills influence the levels of pursuit of truth, openness, inquiring mind, organization, objectivity, and self-trust. However, students' synthesis and application skills of students did not affect their critical thinking dispositions. To sum up, we observed the influence of information literacy skills on critical thinking dispositions. The results of this study provide foundations for maintaining and developing information literacy instructions in school libraries.
