The premise of this study is that an ultimate objective in planning an exhibition space is visitors' experiences created by a result of their first-hand experiences and responses within an exhibition space, and this result can be recognized in the visitors' movement. Thus, the exhibition layout that can directly affects viewers' main line of flow and movement patterns was examined vis--vis a mutually complementary relation in a triangular composition with the structure of exhibition space and the exhibition contents. This study, with the subjects of standing exhibit halls of Gwacheon National Science Museum, Daejeon National Science Museum, and Tokyo National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, analyzed 'the correlation between the configuration of the exhibition area and the visitors' movement. The targeted subjects were analyzed from the perspectives of type of architectural space and organization of the exhibition method, and the purpose of this study was to find a spatial evidence to predict the spectator movement formed within the exhibition halls of science museums. The main indicators used are: Based on the investigation/analysis as described above, the following conclusion could be drawn. Diversity of exhibition environment and spectator movement: besides the two big categories of the types of architectural space and types of exhibition method, the construction of vertical circulation and size and shape of the exhibition space, distribution characteristics of exhibition medium, organization of symbolic space and such other diverse organizations and combinations of exhibition environment are implied to have the capability to alter the scope and degree of predicting spectator movement. As an example, the types of architectural space comprising the wide-area viewing circulation was found to be able to change the system of planar circulation according to the composition of vertical circulation. Along with this, it was implied that the format of architectural space influences the form of the exhibition space, and may also act as a factor directly influencing the diversity and arrangement of the exhibition methods. That is, the spatial elements comprising the exhibition environment acts inter-complexly, and exhibits characteristics of limiting or controlling spectator movement.
Founded on a close relationship between exhibition scenarios and media, this study was conducted 1) to establish exhibition arrangement types by using three analytical indicators, such as arrangement types of exhibition, groupings of similar exhibition media, and exhibition density; and 2) to demonstrate the importance of considering the characteristics of exhibition arrangement types by using viewing behavior codes as a major analytical indicator. The following three types were investigated in this research: First, the Independent type (Type C) was found to be strongly influenced by architectural and spatial forms, especially by low exhibition density and high visual information. Also, compared with the Wall Dominant type, low number of viewing behavior codes and distribution was found even though there were high correlations among viewing behavior codes. This is assumed to be due to low exhibition density. Second, the Wall Dominant type (Type A) was found to be not influenced by architectural and spatial forms. This is because space is planned and restructured centering on the wall type showcases. At the planning stage of exhibition, it is easy to divide or combine space according to the contents and structure of exhibition scenarios. Compared with the Independent type, low correlations were found among viewing behavior codes. This is due to low participation or manipulation exhibitions. However, this implies that more active viewing behaviors can be induced if appropriate exhibition techniques and arrangement methods are used for each exhibition content. Third, the Independent Dominant type (Type B) was found to confuse visitors in selecting routes by displaying too many exhibits at a limited space in a disorderly fashion. It failed to attract visitors to the main exhibition area, where a big space is formed in the center. Visitors were found to view exhibits that are arranged near the major traffic line.
To plan more effective exhibitions, exhibitions should be evaluated and verified through research. This is Important in that it will present measures for improving shortcomings in exhibition goals and procedures; and it will also provide new ideas and goals for future exhibition plans. The purposes of this study are to investigate the applicability of evaluation methods by organizing related theories systematically through a literature review and to provide more practical and valuable information about the methods by applying them to actual museums. For this study, the National Science Museum was investigated since it uses various themes and exhibition methods, compared with other science museums. Exhibition structures and presentation formats were first analyzed, and then the methods of trace and observation were used to investigate how visitors use the museum. Surveys were also conducted at two different times. The results of the analyses showed that problems of exhibits, arrangement methods of exhibition space, or guide systems are more prominent than those of the presentation format itself. Based on these results, measures for improvement are suggested as follows: First, new formats of exhibition halls using new window frames or holes should be explored to stimulate visitors' curiosity and to lead viewing traffic flow in the museum. Second, in presenting representative exhibits, a gate can be installed at each exhibition area, and representative exhibits are displayed by the gate or between exhibition booths. Third, if a small space is provided at the end of each exhibition area, it can be used to give an orientation on the next exhibition or used as a resting place.
In this study, formaldehyde concentrations in two exhibition halls were monitored using a passive sampler from May 2012 to April 2013. Formaldehyde concentrations in the exhibition halls were 5 to 36 times higher than concentrations outdoors. Concentrations inside the exhibition room and showcase varied according to pollutant source, HVAC(heating, ventilation, air conditioning)system and environment management. The formaldehyde concentration levels were corrected according to a standard method prescribed by Indoor Air Quality Management Law of the Ministry of Environment, Korea. As a result, Most concentration levels exceeded the exhibition standard of the Ministry of Environment($100{\mu}g/m^3$) and artifacts conservation standard of Tokyo National Museum($50{\mu}g/m^3$). Seasonal concentrations in the exhibition room and showcase were in the order summer>fall>spring>winter. Formaldehyde emissions increased in summer when air temperature and relative humidity are both high. Formaldehyde concentration distribution according to the temperature and relative humidity showed positive correlation. Air temperature showed good correlation because $R^2$ was in the range of 0.8~0.9. Analysis of formaldehyde emission characteristics in the exhibition hall would be helpful in efforts to improve indoor air quality.
The study aims to suggest the direction of improvement in presenting the exhibition space by examining the current status quo of children's science exhibitions in order to enhance the educational effectiveness Children's Science Museum. For this purpose, the children's science museum exhibition and exhibition space were categorized into three themes largely according to the exhibition contents, and an analysis framework was developed to analyze exhibition media and exhibition space. For the research subjects, we selected 7 exhibition halls targeted at children in Korea, collected data via video-taping, and analyzed based on the framework of analysis. When analyzing the display situation in which the exhibits have the contents of 'body', 'peripheral things', and 'natural phenomena', we found that the exhibits are composed of too difficult contents to understand, which do not fit the children's developmental level, and the major media used are observational and explaining media. Additionally, concerning the exhibition space, there is a tendency to rely on the installation elements and color effect. It is also difficult to deduce the contents of the exhibits and the entire story. We suggest that the entire exhibition planning be carefully made from the beginning to improve the current status and enhance the educational effectiveness of the Children's Science Museum with the help of experts.
Visitors' behaviors within an exhibition space are a substantial means to grant spatial arrangement and validity of exhibits. Therefore, the study analyzed visitors' behaviors in the viewpoint of attraction power and holding power of exhibits on the basis of exhibition layout of real science museums. Through the analysis, the study grasped efficiency of analysis index and exhibition environment elements which might have an effect on planning the exhibition space of a large-scale museum and producing detailed ranges of exhibition. The main indicators used are: 1. Attraction power: it indicates the relative incidence of people who have stopped in front of an object/exhibit during the exhibition tour. It is calculated by dividing the number of people who stop by the total number of people who have visited the museum or gallery. 2. Holding power: it measures the average time spent in front of an information/communication element. It is calculated by dividing the average time of stay by the time "necessary" to read an element. As a result, It was expected that attraction power and holding power of exhibit would be increased when moving line of seeing was inductive. However, when the traffic movements of seeing was inductive, repetitive seeing of exhibit was almost never realized and visitors had a strong tendency which viewed on their way of moving without viewing on their way of stopping. On the other hand, it may mean that density of exhibit is low or size of exhibition space is small that most of exhibits within exhibition space have high attraction power and holding power. As Gwacheon National Science Museum, when a museum is composed of many large-scale exhibit halls, it should be formed by separating the main moving line of seeing from the optional moving line of seeing through visitors' natural choice of exhibit and proper inducement of moving line of seeing. In such structure, exhibition environment of the main moving line has an effect on attraction of exhibit and the use of optional moving line acts as a factor to increase attraction. In addition, it is thought that attribute of exhibit and proper arrangement of rest space within exhibition space will increase holding power of exhibit.

This study aims to investigate the kinds of content and science communication included in the exhibits and the exhibition panels in order to suggest a direction of desirable educational development in the nuclear power information halls in Korea. The four local nuclear power information halls in Korea and the nuclear power science center in Japan are selected as the subject. The results of this study show that the 'conceptual' exhibits are a dominant topic among the four topics of contents, and the concept (CON) and interest (INT) are found as the most dominating component of science communication. Meanwhile, the nature of science (NOS), awareness (AW), enjoyment (ENJ), and opinion (OP) components are little exhibited. The findings of this study indicate that the nuclear power information halls can be more professional to enhance scientific literacy, as the informal education institutions, providing information of nuclear energy and radiation on various perspectives for visitors to make decisions by themselves and to improve their scientific attitudes and understanding of science communication. In addition, the limited science communication can be fully reinforced by docents or commentators. Further research needs to investigate the development of a specialized program to produce professional docents or commentators.

The purpose of this study is to identify the status of the science museum reflected in the exhibition, and develop and apply Nature of Science(NOS) education programs based on the science museum exhibition. The analyse tool was developed to understand the NOS in the science museum. The researchers recognized the nature of science reflected in four exhibition halls in Korea. Based on the analysis, we developed the NOS education program. NOS education programs were developed and applied to supplement the NOS that appears to be limited to scientific exhibitions based on the prior analysis of science exhibition. The results of the study were as follows. First, we analyzed the nature of science reflected in the exhibition of two main science museums, and it was mostly implicit and most were to understand the relationship among STS(Science-Technology-Society). And also we analyzed the NOS reflected in the exhibition of two national history museum, and it was also mostly implicit and most were about the way of how to find out the knowledge, inference. Second, in order to supplement the NOS of the science museum, we developed the NOS education program based on the exhibits. After applying it to the science museum, we conducted a qualitative study. As a result, there was a positive change only in the aspects of NOS (science is tentative, science is from creativity and imaginative, science is the produce of social and culture, science is from the scientific method) that reflected explicitly. The conclusions derived from this study are as follows : For the cultivation of science in the scientific museum, various factors are needed depending on the theme of the science museum. Also, it is helpful to actively implement the NOS educational programs that utilize the exhibit. Therefore, the exhibit planners' and developers' competencies are critical to develop explicit NOS education programs in its expertise.
A lot of researchers have been investigating interactive portable projection systems such as a mini-projector. In addition, in exhibition halls and museums, there is a trend toward using interactive projection systems to make viewing more exciting and impressive. They can also be applied in the field of art, for example, in creating shadow plays. The key idea of the interactive portable projection systems is to recognize the user's gesture in real-time. In this paper, a vision-based shadow gesture recognition method is proposed for interactive projection systems. The gesture recognition method is based on the screen image obtained by a single web camera. The method separates only the shadow area by combining the binary image with an input image using a learning algorithm that isolates the background from the input image. The region of interest is recognized with labeling the shadow of separated regions, and then hand shadows are isolated using the defect, convex hull, and moment of each region. To distinguish hand gestures, Hu's invariant moment method is used. An optical flow algorithm is used for tracking the fingertip. Using this method, a few interactive applications are developed, which are presented in this paper.
Following advances in technology and with the growing need for renewable energy, fluorescent and halogen lamps are being replaced by LED lighting in museum systems. This paper researched the setting of standards for the diverse lighting systems in addition to the LED lighting that are expected to be introduced in museums in the future. Contrary to previous belief, LEDs were shown to only barely emit in the ultraviolet region, but the visible rays were confirmed to produce discoloration depending on illuminance-hours. When the color change by LED lamps at the color temperature of 2800K, or warm white, was compared with 5500K, or white, the emission spectrum analysis confirmed that the blue spike increased at a higher color temperature and caused more discoloration. This suggests that in addition to illumination, color temperature should be considered by including the emission spectrum when museums set lighting environment standards.
