  • Eighty children, aged from 2 years 8 months to 5 years 1 month old, were examined to study the relationship between the preschool children's response at dental visit and the influencing factors. The results were as follows: 1, There was no significant relationship between the sexes and the children's response. 2. Children who experienced the painful dental treatment demonstrated significantly more negative dental response. 3. Children who stowed negative dental behavior at last dental visit demonstrated significantly more negative dental response. 4. Children of mothers with high anxiety scores demonstrated significantly more negative dental response. 5, Children who were unpleasant at hospitaization demonstrated significantly more negative dental response. 6. Children who thought they had dental problems demonstrated significantly the most negative dental response. 7. Children who abhorred the medical treatment demonstrated significantly more negative dental response.

Clustering of craniofacial patterns in Korean children with snoring

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the craniofacial patterns of Korean children with snoring and adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH) could be categorized into characteristic clusters according to age. Methods: We enrolled 236 children with snoring and ATH (age range, 5-12 years) in this study. They were subdivided into four age groups: 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12 years. Based on cephalometric analysis, the sagittal and vertical skeletal patterns of each individual were divided into Class I, II, and III, as well as the normodivergent, hypodivergent, and hyperdivergent patterns, respectively. Cluster analysis was performed using cephalometric principal components in addition to the age factor. Results: Three heterogeneous clusters of craniofacial patterns were obtained in relation to age: cluster 1 (41.9%) included patients aged 5-8 years with a skeletal Class I or mild Class II and hyperdivergent pattern; cluster 2 (45.3%) included patients aged 9-12 years with a Class II and hyperdivergent pattern; and cluster 3 (12.8%) included patients aged 7-8 years with a Class III and hyperdivergent pattern. Conclusions: This study found that the craniofacial patterns of Korean children with snoring and ATH could be categorized into three characteristic clusters according to age groups. Although no significantly dominant sagittal skeletal discrepancy was observed, hyperdivergent vertical discrepancy was consistently evident in all clusters.

학령기 아동용 스마트기기를 사용한 기억력 평가과제의 개발 및 타당도 검증 연구 (The Development and Validation of Memory Tasks Using Smart Devices for School Aged Children)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop auditory-verbal and visual-spatial memory tasks using smart devices for children aged 8 to 10 years and examine their validity. Methods: One-hundred and fourteen school-aged children were recruited through internet advertising. We developed memory tasks assessing auditory-verbal memory, visual-spatial memory, and working memory, and then examined their construct validity by examining the developmental trend of the children's mean scores with age. In order to examine the concurrent validity of the tasks, we conducted correlation analyses between the children's scores on the newly developed auditory-verbal, visual-spatial memory and working memory tasks and their scores on well-known standardized tests of memory and working memory, including the auditory-verbal memory subtests of the Korean Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery for Children, Korean Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test, digit span and arithmetic subtest of Korean Educational Development Institute Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Revised, and Corsi block test. Results: The memory and working memory scores measured by the newly developed tasks tended to increase with age. Further, there were significant correlations between the scores of the four cognitive tasks and the corresponding scores of the standardized assessment tools. Conclusion: This study revealed promising evidence for the validity of the memory tasks using smart devices, suggesting their utility for school-aged children in research and clinical settings.

Fluoride Intake in Korean Children Aged 3-6 Years by the Duplicate-Diet Technique

  • This study was conducted to determine the fluoride intakes in 120 preschool children aged $3{\sim}6$ residing in Jumunjin(community water fluoridation area) and Kangnung(non-fluoridation area). The parents duplicated all the diets that their children ingested in a day. The acid-diffusible fluoride in the diet was isolated by the acid-diffusion technique and measured with a fluoride electrode. The mean daily fluoride intakes form all kinds of diet by children residing in Jumunjin and Kangnung were $0.445{\pm}0.354mg/day$ and $0.131{\pm}0.097mg/day$, respectively. It is concluded from this investigtion that the amount of fluoride intake of children living in Jumunjin(fluoridated areas) did not exceed the upper intake level designated by the Institute of medicine of the US National Academy of Science to avoid the risk of dental fluorosis(2.2mg/day in 4- to 8-year-olds).

학령기 아동의 애착안정성, 사회불안 및 우울의 관계: 자기유능감의 매개 효과 (Relationship of Attachment Security, to Social Anxiety, and Depression in School-aged Children: The Mediating Effect of Self Competency)

  • Purpose: This descriptive correlational study was designed to examine the relationship of attachment security to social anxiety and depression. In addition, the mediating effect of self competency in relation to attachment security and the other variables was investigated. Methods: Data were collected from 194 students in grade 5 or 6, and descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, and hierachical multiple regression were used with SPSS/PC 12.0 program to analyze the data. The instruments used were Kerns, Klepac and Cole's Security Scale, La Greca & Stones' Revised Social Anxiety Scales for children (SASC-R), Cho and Lee's Korean form of Kovacs' children's Depression Inventory (CDI) and Harter' Self-perception Profile for Children. Results: There were significantly negative effects between attachment security and the variables, social anxiety and depression. Also, self competency was negatively correlated with social anxiety and depression. Self competency had a significant mediating effect on the relation of social anxiety and depression to attachment security. Conclusion: For the effective management and prevention of social anxiety and depression in school-aged children, programs including strategies to increase self competency should be developed. These programs can increase self competency which has a mediator role between attachment security and the other variables (social anxiety and depression).

학동기 자녀를 둔 맞벌이가족의 가족관계와 정책적 제언 (The family relationships and the policy implications of dual-earner families with school-aged children)

  • The purpose of this study was to describe the current status of dual-earner families in Seoul. The specific aims of this study were to examine the dynamics of marital relationship, parent-child relationship and old mother-daughter/daughter in law relationship in the same family. The sample consised of 265 dual-earner families was selected based on wives' jobs, primarily non-professional. The information was gathered from working couples and their school-aged children. The findings of this study were as follows: 1. Sex role attitude of husbands was more traditional than their wives. Therefore, housework sharing of husbands was very low and wives' perception of inequity was high. Wives' marital satisfaction was affected by the wives' perception of inequity, joint leisure activity, sexual satisfaction, and wives' job satisfaction. Husbands' marital satisfaction was affected by sexual satisfaction, perceived difficulties and problems of the husbands caused by wives' employment, and the degree of their housework participation. 2. The emotional uneasiness of children during mothers' absence was reported. The communication about mothers' job was helpful to gain children's understanding toward mothers' job. Mothers suffered from guilty feeling of neglecting their children in spite of their good performance of mothering role. 3. The employed daughters/daughters in law perceived high rewards and low cost in relationships with their mothers/mothers in law. The perceived quality of daughter-mother relationship was higher with low cost and high rewards than that of daughter in law/mother in law. Finally practical and policy implications were suggested.

부모의 자아존중감이 학령후기 아동의 미디어기기 중독에 미치는 영향: 부부갈등과 아동의 자아존중감의 매개효과 (The Influence of Parental Self-Esteem on Late School-Aged Children's Media Device Addiction: The Mediating Effect of Marital Conflict and Children's Self-Esteem)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effect of parental self-esteem on late school-aged children's media device addiction by mediating marital conflict and children's self-esteem. Methods: This study used data from the 11th (2018) Panel Study on Korean Children. The participants consisted of 1,082 family triads (fathers, mothers, and children). Data were collected using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Marital Conflict Scale, and K-Internet Addiction Scale. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling with SPSS/WIN 27.0 and Mplus 8.7. Results: The final model showed a good fit for the data. Children's media device addiction was directly related to mothers' self-esteem, mothers' marital conflict, and children's self-esteem. Fathers' self-esteem had a significant indirect effect on children's media device addiction by mediating both fathers' and mothers' marital conflict. In addition, mothers' self-esteem had a significant indirect effect on children's media device addiction by mediating mothers' marital conflict. Conclusion: The findings indicates that self-esteem and marital conflict for both fathers and mothers have a significant effect on children's media device addiction. It suggests that more attention might be given to fathers and mothers in developing interventions to prevent children's media device addiction.

기혼여성의 자녀특성과 자살생각의 관련성 (Relationship between the Suicidal Ideation of the Married Women and the Characteristics of Their Children)

  • Background: There are some data to support the theory of a protective effect of parenthood against suicide, as proposed by Durkheim in 1897. We conducted this study to examine the relationship between children characteristics and suicidal ideation among Korean married women. Methods: The data were obtained from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys IV, conducted in 2007-2009, respectively (3,202 married women aged 20-49 years). The children characteristics are the age of the youngest child and the number of children living with subject. Data were analyzed by using logistic regression with SAS 9.2. Results: The risk for suicidal ideation was higher among married women having a young child (aged <7 years). It had strong effect on suicidal ideation in non-employee subjects. The odds ratio for suicidal ideation of women having a youngest child aged 2-3 years compared with reference groups was 1.673 with statistical significance. But the association of suicidal ideation with number of children shows insignificant. Conslusion: The findings suggest a different result with the theory, the protective effect of being a parent of young child on suicide risk for women, first suggested by Durkheim and supported by previous studies and the need for further prospective investigation that lead to policies according children characteristics aimed at improving married women's life.

부모(父母)의 이혼(離婚)이 자녀생활(子女生活)에 미치는 영향(影響)에 관한 연구(硏究) (A Study on the Life-Problems of Divorcee's Children)

  • This study aims to find out and analyze the Various Problems of children of divorcee's and Compare them with that of the children of married parents. The subjects used for this study were 3,975 4~6 graders aged 9~13 enrolled in seven different Primary Schools located in seoul and Jeonju. To begin with, everybody in seven Classed were requested to respond to a questionnaire in order to Select the Children of divorcee's. When 60 children were selected, each Child was interviewed as well as asked to check questionnaire Concerning their daily life problems and feelings about them. When the data were analyzed, the following results were Obtained. 1) Children lives were affected by their parental divorce in various ways, but particularly so in their school lives. However, boys seemed to be affected less than the girls. 2) Either Separated from father or mother, generally the girls seemed to suffer more than the boys. Especially the girls separated from fathers were affected in school life and peer-relationships and the girls Separated from mother were affected in emotional problems and peer-relationships 3) Children of single parents seemed to be affected more in school lives, whereas th, children of remarried Parents Seemed to be affected in peer-problems. Again, the girls were more affected than boys. 4) Children whose parents were divorced when they were still in pre-school age seemed to suffer more than than those in the school age.

손씻기 교육 프로그램이 학령후기 아동의 손씻기 지식, 태도 및 실천에 미치는 효과 (The Effect of Handwashing Education Program on Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Handwashing in Late School-Aged Children)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of hand washing education program on knowledge, attitude and practice of handwashing in elementary school. Methods: The subjects were 484 late school-aged children in Gyeonggi-do. Data were collected from Sep. 1 to Dec. 21, 2009. Results: 1) The handwashing education group (experimental group=E) showed higher score in knowledge of handwashing than the control group (C) (t=5.20, p<.001 ) as the E group scored 29.15(${\pm}3.24$) and the C group scored 27.52(${\pm}3.69$). 2) The E group showed higher score in attitude of handwashing than the C group (t=6.58, p<.001 ) as the E group scored 39.60(${\pm}4.33$) and the C group scored 36.96(${\pm}4.47$). 3) The E group showed higher score in practice of handwashing than the C group (t=2.64, p<.001). as the E group scored 45.90(${\pm}4.79$) and the C group scored 44.67(${\pm}5.33$). Conclusion: The experimental group showed significantly higher scores in knowledge, attitude, practice and cognition of handwashing. This proves that the handwashing program was effective. It is necessary to apply more systematic and various handwashing education programs for other grade at schools.
