A Survey of Current Status on the Science Education of the Special Classroom(School) managed by Firm (산업체(産業體) 부설(附設) 특별학급(特別學級) (학교(學校))의 과학교육(科學敎育) 실태(實態) 조사(調査))

  • This study was accomplished to survey of current situation and management of science education in the special classroom(school) managed by firm. The status of management and the evalution of the scientific inquiry ability were taken on workers attending 17 Special Classes and 9 Special Schools located in Taegu City and Kyungpuk Province. As a responses, most students chose the subject "Science"as an option within their limited 8 units credits. About 88.5% of the students were female. About 78.3% of the classes/schools were conducted in the evening only. About 59.4% of teaching staffs were prevailed with female in these classes, and most of them were young, naive, and unexperienced with their major in chemistry and physics. Insufficient facilities and equipments, crowded classes, understaffed instructors, and inappropriated text materials. etc., were reasons for the students not receiving maximum benefit from these classes and schools. In order to evaluate of scientific inquiry ability, 25 items were constructed and administered to 250 students. The processes of scientific inquiry were classified into 5 categories(category I : establishing a subjects, category II : planning a experiments, category III : conducting a experiments. category IV : interpreting a result of experiments, category V : formulating generalization). As the result obtained from the achivement test analysis, the scores for all the students were significantly low, and the scores for girls were higher than those for boys. The results of test in the selected students showed that inquiry abilities in the category I, II and V were higher than those in category III and IV.

An Analysis of Abductive Reasoning on the Inquiry of Scientists and Elementary School Gifted Children in Science (과학자와 초등과학영재의 탐구에서 나타난 귀추적 추론 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze abductive reasoning on the inquiry of scientists and elementary school gifted children in science. Subjects for this study were eight scientists and eight elementary school gifted children in science studying in the Academy of Gifted Child Education in Science affiliated with Seoul National University of Education. As a result, abductive reasoning on the scientific inquiry of scientists and gifted children showed the three stages of generating hypotheses, designing the experiments, and interpreting the results. The abductive reasoning in each stage characterized the five types as complex abduction, analogical abduction, observation-based abduction, logic-based abduction, selective abduction. The sub-reasoning process of the abductive reasoning of gifted children in science differed in some ways from that of scientists. First, for most scientists, representing a method or representing a casual explican appeared after searching for the characteristics of variables but for gifted children in science, searching for the characteristics of variables appeared after representing a method. Second, scientists tend to rely on logic-based abduction but gifted children in science tend to rely on observationbased abduction. Third, scientists reason by the similar rate in three steps: generating the hypothesis, designing the experience, interpreting the results. On the other hand, most gifted children in science reason about designing the experience.

Analysis of Inquiry Tendency in 'Problem-Solving Method and Process' Sections in the 2009 Authorized Informatics Textbooks (2009년 검정교과서로 채택된 '정보' 교과서 '문제 해결 방법과 절차' 영역 구성의 탐구적 경향 분석)

  • The 2007 revised curriculum designated information-related subjects informatics and changed the direction of education by stressing problem-solving skills in consideration of the characteristics of the subject. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the problem-solving method and process sections of informatics textbooks had an inquiry tendency to foster the problem-solving skills of students. Four textbooks that were widely selected from among the authorized textbooks were analyzed by utilizing Romey method. As a result, just one textbook was found to have an inquiry tendency in terms of texts, but every textbook had a sufficient inquiry tendency in terms of activities. But in terms of structure, there were some problems that commercial softwares were utilized and some softwares employed a particular programming language. The findings of the study suggest that no question should be posed about intrinsic inequality in conjunction with textbook selection, and that textbooks should be structured not to make students adversely affected by learning environments.

Analysis of Error Types on National Science Fair's Students' Research Reports (전국과학전람회 학생 과학탐구 연구보고서의 오류 유형 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the errors in science inquiry research reports written by students who won the encouragement award at the National Science Fair, and analyze the frequency of error types by school levels. The framework for analysis was constructed based on the table of contents of the students' science inquiry research reports, and the reports were analyzed for errors in six stages: Research question/hypothesis, prior research, experimental procedure, results, conclusions, and references. The study identified several types of errors at each stage, such as unreasonable research questions and wrong hypotheses in the research question/hypothesis stage, and limited considerations under certain conditions and selection of inappropriate experimental instruments in the experimental procedure stage. The study found that the frequency ratio of experimental procedure error was the highest across all school levels, and the order of errors varied by school level. Frequency ratio of error types of school level was: in the elementary school students' reports, errors were analyzed in the order of experimental procedure (36.88%), prior research (17.02%), conclusions (16.31%), research question/hypothesis (13.48%); In the middle school students' reports, experimental procedure (42.86%), conclusions (20.00%), prior research (14.28%), results (11.43%), research question/hypothesis (10.01%); In the high school students' reports, experimental procedure (45.16%), research question/ hypothesis (16.13%), conclusions (16.13%), and prior research (11.83%). The findings could be used to guide teachers in helping students conduct scientific inquiry research or write reports.

Analysis of Elementary Teachers' Views on Barriers in Implementing Inquiry-based Instructions (초등학교 과학 탐구 수업 실행의 저해 요인에 대한 교사들의 인식 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate elementary teachers' views on the barriers in implementing inquiry-based instruction in science education. For this, semi-structured in-depth interviews were performed with 22 elementary school teachers who have served for more than five years in the Gyeonggi province. The interview questions were developed through triangulation of Seidman's phase to achieve reliability in the interview data, then interview questions were modified and completed through an analytic induction method in pre-interviews. In-depth interviews were performed individually and all the interviews were recorded. The data of teachers' views on the barriers were categorized and analyzed into external and internal factors of teachers. The study found that the external factors referred by teachers included the following; the lack of a unit time, lack of materials and equipments, too many students in a class, problems in science curriculum management, difficulty in the assessment of students' inquiry activities, the students' learning, lack of opportunities for teaching inquiry activities, harmfulness of accidents, and so on. Internal factors included the following; lack of preparation for inquiry activities, lack of self-confidence, lack of patience, and so on. The various barriers presented and their causes were analyzed in detail, and possible efforts in activating inquiry activities in elementary science education were suggested.

A Case Study on the Practice of 'Science Inquiry Experiment' in the 2015 Revised National Curriculum: An Understanding in the Perspective of Cultural-Historical Activity Theory(CHAT) (2015 개정 교육과정의 '과학탐구실험' 실행에 대한 사례연구 -문화역사적 활동이론(CHAT) 측면에서의 이해-)

  • As 'Science Inquiry Experiment' is newly introduced in the high school curriculum, where inquiry and experiment oriented education is insufficient, this study aims to analyze teacher's practice of 'Science Inquiry Experiment' in depth and identify contradictions during its process in the perspective of Cultural Historical Activity Theory. The research participant is teacher SHIN who is exclusively responsible for Science Inquiry Experiment. Starting with reflection on the practice of Science Inquiry Experiment class conducted in the first semester, interviews with participants, participatory observation and local materials were used during the 2nd semester's Science Inquiry Experiment class. A descriptive analysis of the teacher SHIN's practice of Science Inquiry Experiment was carried out and the contradictions in the activity system of the teacher SHIN were identified. The result reveals that in the overall practice of teaching Integrated Science and Science Inquiry Experiment, there were contradictions between teacher SHIN's recognition about cooperation(subject) and shared responsibility with other teachers(division of labor), and between teacher SHIN's recognition about the subjects(subject) and contrasting contents in teacher training courses(community). In the practice of teaching Science Inquiry Experiment, there were specific contradictions between teacher SHIN's recognition about the subject(subject) and time of job assignment(rule), between experimental activities(object) and experimental tools(tool), and between purpose of the subject(object) and directions about assessment(rule). These contradictions directly or indirectly influence the practice of teaching Science Inquiry Experiment. There needs to be support for constructing an activity system capable of supporting and promoting teachers' practice of Science Inquiry Experiment, and we made several suggestions to resolve the problems.

The Effect of Jurisprudental Inquiry Model-Oriented STS Program on the High School Underachievers (법률학적 모형에 의한 STS 프로그램이 고등학교 학습부진아의 학업성취도와 태도에 미치는 효과)

  • In this study, the effect of the STS program that was oriented from jurisprudental inquiry model on high school underachievers was investigated. The subjects were 76 high school students. They were divided into two groups, the STS program applied class(treatment group) and the traditional lecture-centered class(control group). The STS program was consisted of three subunits. 'nutrient and health', 'stimulation and reaction' and 'reproduction',of 'life' unit of high school general science. And these 3 subunits consisting of eight contents were lectured over 8 hours. The treatment group showed much better achievement in learning significantly (p<.05) than the control group showing that the STS program affected. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the STS program compatible with achievement level of students, and teaching-learning approaches and learning programs for underachievers.

Developing and Applying the Questionnaire to Measure High School Students' Unskeptical Attitude in Science Inquiry (과학탐구 상황에서 고등학생들의 반회의주의적 태도 측정도구 개발 및 적용)

  • The purpose of the study is to develop a questionnaire that examines unskeptical attitudes in scientific inquiry context. The questionnaire items were developed through literature research, expert review, and statistical analyses for validity and the differences in scores were identified by gender and tracks. A total of 363 high school students participated in the study. To explore the validity evidence of items, the Rasch analysis and the reliability of internal consistency were performed, and the two-way ANOVA was performed to compare the scores of the unskeptical attitudes between gender and academic track. Self-reporting and Likert-scaling 23 items were developed to measure unskeptical attitudes in scientific inquiry context. The items were developed in the sub-domain of scientific inquiry: 'questioning and hypothesis generating,' 'experiment designing,' and 'explaining and interpreting.' Second, the validity and reliability of the unskeptical were identified in a rigorous method. The validity of items were identified by multi-dimensional partial score model analysis through the Rasch model, and all 23 items were found to be fit to model. Various reliability evidences were also found to be appropriate. It was found that there were no significant differences of unskeptical attitude score between the gender and academic track except one comparison. The developed questionnaire could be used to check an unskeptical attitude in the course of scientific inquiry and to compare the effects of scientific inquiry classes.

An Analysis on Teaching and Learning Strategies of Inquiry Tasks in the Elementary Moral Textbooks by Multiple Intelligence (다중지능을 이용한 초등학교 도덕 교과서 탐구 과제의 교수·학습 전략 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the teaching and learning strategies included in the inquiry tasks of elementary moral textbooks with multiple intelligences (M.I), and to propose educational information services of teacher librarians. It was found that the tasks were mainly designed by the linguistic intelligence, logical & mathematical intelligence and spatial intelligence. In terms of the information literacy process, linguistic intelligence and spatial intelligence are mainly applied to the analysis-understanding stage. Logical & mathematical intelligence is applied to the stage of comprehensive-application and linguistic intelligence is applied to expression-delivery step. In order to cultivate the insufficient M.I in inquiry activities, teacher librarians should improve room and teaching materials of their school library and provide workbooks using the graphic organizer after analyzing the linkage of the inquiry tasks between the subjects.
