Experience of Peer Support Work among People with Mental Illness in the Community: A Grounded Theory Approach (정신장애인의 동료지원가 활동 경험: 근거이론 접근)

  • Purpose: This study discovered a substantive theory of the experience and process of peer support work among people with mental illness. Methods: The participants were members of community-based mental health facilities and had been working as peer supporters for more than six months. The data were collected through in-depth interviews with twelve participants and analyzed using Corbin and Strauss's grounded theory approach. Results: The core category was "becoming a healer going with patients in the journey of recovery," and the core phenomenon was "identity confusion as a peer supporter." The causal conditions were "starting peer support work without certainty" and "standing at the boundary between the therapist and patient." The intervening conditions were "willingness to become a successful peer supporter," "feeling a sense of homogeneity with the patient," "accepting the mental illness," and "support from people around." The action and interaction strategies were "letting go of greed," "being open about oneself," "developing professional skills," "maintaining wellness in the body and mind," and "being with the patient." The consequences were "becoming a useful person," "changing attitude toward life," "expansion of the sense of self-existence," "recovering from mental illness," and "discovering a role as peer supporter." Finally, the substantive theory of "becoming a healer going with patients in the journey of recovery" was derived. Conclusion: This study provides a holistic understanding of peer support work and the implications of interventions to help people with mental illness in a person-centered recovery process.

Impact of Participation in Childcare on the Psychological Well-being of Fathers with an Infant (영유아기 자녀를 둔 아버지의 육아참가가 자신의 심리적 복지에 미치는 영향)

  • The study's purpose was to clarify childcare's impact on the psychological well-being of fathers with an infant. This study included 1,250 households that used 15 nursery centers. The questionnaire asked about the fathers' age, income, working conditions, participation in childcare, recognition of sense of usefulness to their family, marital satisfaction, mental health, health-related quality of life(QOL), and the mothers' age, number of children, age of the youngest child, and working conditions. A casual model was examined using SEM. The results were as follows: first, fathers' participation in childcare contributed to health-related QOL through the recognition of feeling useful to their family. Second, fathers' participation in childcare contributed to marital satisfaction, directly and indirectly through health -related QOL and improved mental health. Third, fathers' participation in childcare contributed to health related QOL through the recognition of feelings of usefulness, marital satisfaction, and mental health, indirectly. These results suggest that promoting fathers' participation in childcare is important to help prevent many problems and to improve QOL.

The Effects of Health Education on Health Knowledge and Health Promoting Behaviors in Elementary School Students (초등학생의 건강지식과 건강증진행위에 관한 보건과 교육의 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate the effects of health education on health knowledge and health promoting behaviors in elementary school students. Methods: 17 sessions of health education were provided to the fifth graders in two elementary schools in Gyunggi Province and data were collected from 268 students. The data of 250 students who had responded both pretest and posttest were analyzed using SPSS program. Results: The scores of health knowledge for mental health, social health, sex and health were lower than other domain. The scores of knowledge for drug abuse/smoking and disease prevention/management were higher than other domain. Overall health knowledge was improved significantly from 0.60 at pretest to 0.81 at posttest (t=15.98, p<.001). The score of health promoting behaviors at post test was higher than score at pre test but this change was not significant (t=-0.91, p<.365). Conclusion: Health education had significant effects on health knowledge and we need to maintain and activate health education in elementary schools. Health education did not have significant effects on health promoting behaviors, we need to do further research for understanding why and how we improve health promoting behaviors.

The Sexual Health for the Elderly in the Characteristics and Factors: Based on the WHO Sexual Health (WHO 성 건강에 근거한 노인 성 건강 특성과 영향요인)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics and factors of each area by considering the gender health of the elderly as the integration of mental, physical, emotional, and social gender health based on the WHO gender health. The sexual health of the elderly is significantly different by gender, academic background, and region, and there is a clear difference in mental, physical, emotional sexual health and social sexual health. The mental, physical and emotional sexual health of the elderly in urban areas, those with high education and male is high, but the elderly in the rural areas, those with low education, and female are high in social sexual health. The factors affecting sexual health are as follows. Mental sexual health was positively influenced by satisfaction of sexual life and sexual knowledge. Physical sexual health was positively influenced by life and spouse satisfaction, and emotional sexual health was positively influenced by sexual relationship, spouse satisfaction, sexual life satisfaction and sexual knowledge. Social sexual health has a negative (-) effect on spouse satisfaction and sexual relationships. Integrated sexual health in old age can affect subjective health and quality of life, leading to successful aging. Sexual health education is needed to form a safe and healthy sexual life and interpersonal relationship. The 'sex' that appears as a cumulative trajectory of life should be accompanied by the accurate sexual health awareness and sex education that encompasses all generations. Therefore, in the composition of sex health education program, it is necessary to reflect the components that can enhance the sensitivity of adulthood to strengthen understanding and communication of spouse.

Short- and Long-term Effects of a Physical Exercise Intervention on Work Ability and Work Strain in Symptomatic Menopausal Women

  • Background: Physical exercise during leisure time is known to increase physical capacity; however, the long-term effects on work ability and work strain are inconclusive. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a 6-month physical exercise program on work ability and work strain after 6 months and 30 months, among women with menopausal symptoms at baseline. Methods: A questionnaire including questions on work ability and work strain was mailed in the beginning, at 6 months and after 30 months after the intervention to occupationally active women participating in a randomized controlled study on physical exercise and quality of life. The intervention included aerobic exercise training 4 times per week, 50 minutes per session. Work ability was measured with the Work Ability Index (WAI) and with questions about physical and mental work strain. Results: Women aged 47-62 years (N=89) who were occupationally active at baseline were included in the analyses. The increase in WAI from baseline to the end of the exercise intervention (6 months) was statistically significantly greater among the intervention group than among the control group (regression coefficient 2.08; 95% confidence interval 0.71-3.46). The difference between the groups persisted for 30 months. No significant short- or long-term effects on physical and mental work strain were found. Conclusion: A 6-month physical exercise intervention among symptomatic menopausal women had positive short-term as well as long-term effects on work ability.

Association Between Organizational Downsizing and Depressive Symptoms Among Korean Workers: A Cross-sectional Analysis

  • Background: Organizational downsizing may be significantly linked to depressive symptoms, yet research on this impact in Asian contexts is limited. This study investigates the association between downsizing during the COVID-19 pandemic and depressive symptoms across diverse employment statuses. Methods: This study used the data from 6th Korean Working Conditions Survey. Depressive symptoms were measured using WHO-5 well-being index with a cut-off of 50. Downsizing was defined as decrease in the number of employees during last three years. Multivariable logistic regression adjusted for socio-demographic and occupational factors was used to estimate the adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for depressive symptoms associated with downsizing, including subgroup analyses. Results: Among 26,247 Korean workers (mean age: 43.4, men: 47.5%), the prevalence of depressive symptoms was 29.5% (n = 7,751), and the proportion of downsizing was 15.2% (n = 3,978). The prevalence of depressive symptoms was significantly higher among the downsizing group (36.7%, n = 1,460) than among the no-downsizing group (28.3%, n = 6,291). The result of logistic regression revealed a significant association between downsizing and depressive symptoms (adjusted OR [95% CI]: 1.39 [1.29-1.50]), particularly pronounced among high socioeconomic status workers. Conclusion: This study underscores the significant association between depressive symptoms and organizational downsizing, especially high vulnerability of socioeconomically advantaged and stable workers. These findings highlight the necessity for targeted mental health support and further longitudinal research to clarify the relationship between employment changes and mental health within the Korean workforce.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study is to find out the effects of dance movement therapy(DMT) on anxiety, depression, and life quality by applying DMT program to climacteric women. Methods: The subjects of the research are climacteric women between the ages of 45 and 55 who located in the city of oo in Chollabukdo. The program was conducted with the subjects of a total of 27 women less than one year after menopause, 14 in the experiment group and 13 in the comparison group, 90 minutes a session, once a week, for 15 weeks. Results: The results show that the points of anxiety and depression decreased significantly in the experiment group which participated in the DMT program (p<0.05). The points of life increased significantly in physical & mental wellbeing, competence, and stability (p<0.05). Vitality points increased, but not significantly. Conclusions: This means that DMT decreases anxiety and depression of climacteric women, has positive effects on life quality related to health, and can help increase physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing of climacteric women.

Survey of the COVID-19 Epidemic Effect on Mental Health of Seoul City Elementary and Middle School Teacher (COVID-19 유행이 서울시 초등학교·중학교 교사의 정신건강에 미치는 영향 설문조사)

  • Objectives : The study aimed to investigate the effect of the COVID-19 epidemic on the mental health of elementary and middle school teachers, especially hwabyung, depression, and anxiety. Methods : The participants were teachers of three elementary schools and one middle school in Seoul. The survey was self-reported by online. The questionnaire included hwabyung scale, CES-D, and GAD-7. Results : The survey conducted from November 5th to December 3rd, 2020. A total number of 81 teachers replied to the survey. The hwabyung prevalence was 27.2% by hwabyung symptoms score. The mean hwabyung characteristics score was 30.10±10.55, the mean hwabyung symptoms score was 18.32±12.26. The depression prevalence was 44.4%, mean CES-D was 15.85±11.51. The anxiety prevalence was 43.2%, mean GAD-7 was 5.05±4.53. Conclusions : The survey showed that teachers had a high score of hwabyung, anxiety, and depression in the COVID-19 epidemic. The teachers were in need of help to improve their mental health.

Effects of Emotion Freedom Techniques on Academic Stress in Korean Medical Students: A Single-Group Pre-Post Study

  • Objectives: Academic stress poses a significant risk for the mental health of medical students, and a feasible group intervention program for managing academic stress is required. The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical effectiveness of emotional freedom techniques (EFT) on the mental health of Korean medical students. Methods: The class of first-year medical school students (n=36) participated in an after-school EFT group intervention program comprising six sessions (15 minutes/session, three weeks) to analyze its clinical effectiveness as a single-group test-retest clinical study. The changes in the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) scores were examined using a paired t-test and Cohen's D at post-EFT and two-week follow-up. Results: There were significant curtailments at post-EFT and follow-up measures in TAI-Total (t=2.704 and t=3.289), TAI-Worry (t=2.297 and t=2.454), TAI-Emotionality (t=2.763 and t=3.654), PSS-Negative Perspective (t=2.659 and t=3.877), and PANAS-Negative Affect (t=2.885 and t=3.259) subscales, however not in PSS-Positive Perspective (t=-1.279 and t=-1.101) and PANAS-Positive Affect (t=0.194 and t=-0.122) subscales. The trait anxiety (t=2.227) was significantly mitigated in the post-EFT measure and the state anxiety (t=2.30) in the follow-up measure. Conclusions: The EFT group intervention alleviated test stress, negative affect, and anxiety in the Korean medical students. This study contributes to an understanding of academic stress and EFT intervention in the competitive environment of medical education.

Effects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Program on mental health problems in children dealing with trauma: Focused on community district victimized by oil spill (외상을 다룬 인지행동 프로그램이 재해 피해 아동의 정신건강상태에 미치는 영향: 유류유출 피해 지역 아동을 중심으로)

  • Purpose: This study was done to evaluate the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy in a victimized community district and to determine if the program is an effective nursing intervention to reduce posttraumatic stress disorder symptom, depression and state anxiety. Methods: A nonequivalent control group design was used for the study. The participants, 32 elementary school students, were selected from grades 4, 5, 6 and each student was assigned to either the experimental (16) or control (16) group. Cognitive behavioral therapy was used as the experimental treatment from April 9 to May 28, 2009. The experimental group received cognitive behavior therapy intervention 8 times. Data analysis was done using ANCOVA with SPSS 17.0. Results: After the intervention, the experimental group showed significantly lower levels of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms than the control group. Conclusion: The findings from this study suggest that cognitive behavioral therapy is an effective nursing intervention to decrease the level of mental health problems of children in victimized district. Further research is required in order to identify the continuous effects of cognitive behavioral therapy.
