  • Driven by the changes of living environment and the improvement of life quality there is a growing desire for education, culture, daily life sports, and welfare of local residents. One of the places with the facilities and space which can accommodate such desires of the residents is elementary facility within welfare districts. Additionally, elementary school facilities are assuming more roles as the center of local community, and the current education facility policies are going through a great deal of changes and diversification of school facilities due to the operation of the new 7th education courses. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to analyze school facility compounding by domestic and overseas trends and patterns in line with the trend of the social demand, and the researcher found out that in Japan the mutual exchanges among local residents are very active by compounding sports facilities, cultural facilities, lifelong education facilities, and social welfare facilities in school facilities. Therefore, this thesis researched on the space structure pattern and planning elements of compounding facilities under the premise of utilizing them for the local society reflecting the domestic trends and characteristics, and intended to propose a direction for planned research on the compounded facilities of elementary school.

A Facility Design Model for 1300 Capacity School Foodservice with Adjacency and Bubble Diagrams (근접요구도와 버블다이어그램을 적용한 1300식 규모의 학교급식 시설 설계 모델)

  • This study aimed to suggest a 1300 scale of a middle school foodservice facility floor plan which was compliant to the principle of HACCP, as well as ensuring food and work safety, and the flow of personnel and food materials. which consisted of 46 nutrition teachers and 6 experts, responded with a questionnaire on the relationship of functional area and space. Using their opinions, key principles for the design of the facility were single direction movement of food materials, customers and workers; minimization of the cross-contamination through the separation of functional space; and securement of customer-focused efficiency; staff-centered convenience and efficiency; and work and food safety. After the completion of an adjacency diagram, bubble diagram and program statement, the functional areas of a 1300 scale middle school food-service facility were allocated as follows: $9.9\;m^2$ for the receiving area, $56.1\;m^2$ for the pre-preparation area, $10.5\;m^2$ for the food storage area, $6.0\;m^2$ for the supplies storage area, $97.8\;m^2$ for the cooking area, $33.6\;m^2$ for the service area, $52.5\;m^2$ for dish washing area, cafeteria $410.5\;m^2$, $4.5\;m^2$ for the front room, for a total of $725.8\;m^2$. Expert groups have pointed to limitations within this model as there are no windows in the office for the influx of fresh outside air and a need for the straight line installation of steam-jacket and frying kettles on the sides of windows. This study can be useful as the guidelines for estimating the investment cost of the facility and placing the placement of functional areas and equipment in the renovation of the facility. It can be also useful data for a methodology of foodservice facility design.

A Study on the Giuseppe Terragni's Sant'Elia Nursery School - Focused on the Flexibility and Openness in the Modern Educitional Facility - (주세페 테라니의 산텔리아 유치원 계획에 관한 연구 - 근대 교육시설의 가변성 및 개방성을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the 'Sant'Elia Nursery School' constructed in 1937 at Como, Italy. Giuseppe Terragni(1904-1943) is, as it well known, one of the representative architects in the period of Italian rationalism architecture. In particular, his 'Casa del Fascio(1928~1936)' is evaluated as a representative work of this period. The research is based on the original drawings and letters, mostly produced by G. Terragni himself. Through the analyze on the design process, the research tries to reveal Terragni's design method and strategy, especially in the educational facility project. There are at least four deferent phases in the Terragni's design process; in each phase, there are fundamental changes such as a structural grid system, relationships between skin and columns or spatial sequences. Establishment of a new guideline on the educational facility in 1925 is also an another important issue. There was a political need, during the period of Mussolini's regime, to find a model of educational facilities. So, this project reflects not only the Terragni's design process but also the good example of educational facility in the early Twenty Century in Europe.

Planning and Design Guidelines for the Utilization of Elementary Schools in Urban Housing Blocks (주거지내 초등학교의 활용을 위한 계획 방향)

  • The intent of this study is to investigate the current situations and planning implications of elementary schools in urban housing blocks, and to propose the planning and design guidelines for them. The premise of this research is that an elementary school should function as a communal facility, shared by its community, so called open-school. 32 schools in three new towns were selected as sample cases and they were closely surveyed in terms of their site planning issues in residential blocks, and three sample open-elementary schools were analyzed in a comparative manner for finding their roles and functional fulfillment as a communal facility in the neighborhoods. Based on the findings, several planning principles and design techniques or devices are suggested for the utilization of elementary schools by local residents, mainly making issues of location, relationship to other facilities and open spaces in residential blocks, access, apartment layout, school building and outdoor spaces, and open program.

Preliminary design and assessment of a heat pipe residual heat removal system for the reactor driven subcritical facility

  • A heat pipe residual heat removal system is proposed to be incorporated into the reactor driven subcritical (RDS) facility, which has been proposed by MIT Nuclear Reactor Laboratory for testing and demonstrating the Fluoride-salt-cooled High-temperature Reactor (FHR). It aims to reduce the risk of the system operation after the shutdown of the facility. One of the main components of the system is an air-cooled heat pipe heat exchanger. The alkali-metal high-temperature heat pipe was designed to meet the operation temperature and residual heat removal requirement of the facility. The heat pipe model developed in the previous work was adopted to simulate the designed heat pipe and assess the heat transport capability. 3D numerical simulation of the subcritical facility active zone was performed by the commercial CFD software STAR CCM + to investigate the operation characteristics of this proposed system. The thermal resistance network of the heat pipe was built and incorporated into the CFD model. The nominal condition, partial loss of air flow accident and partial heat pipe failure accident were simulated and analyzed. The results show that the residual heat removal system can provide sufficient cooling of the subcritical facility with a remarkable safety margin. The heat pipe can work under the recommended operation temperature range and the heat flux is below all thermal limits. The facility peak temperature is also lower than the safety limits.

  • Unlike other educational spaces in school facilities, restrooms have remained unpleasant spaces without reflecting the change in social awareness and students' lifestyle. In the process of the 'School Restroom Environment Remodeling Project in Seoul' by means of "user participatory design method", this study aimed to suggest a design of the school restroom environment responding to the different needs of actual users, who are students and school staffs. By surveying them, it was revealed that they have a variety of respective behavioral patterns and spatial needs according to their status, gender, age and working period. Implications of this study are as follows; First, it is necessary to establish a separate restroom facility standards that respond to the characteristics of elementary school students. Second, there should be an expansive approach to widely accommodate with the users' needs that were found out through 'user participation', more than just repairing pre-existing space. Third, it needs to have critical review of the maintenance and operation system itself as well as the improvement of the school restroom environment.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the state-of-the-art solar energy system design cases among LEED(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified school projects and to explore the feasibilities for their applications in domestic school design. Investigating the sold wattages in some kinds of buildings, the wattages per an educational facility is the second-largest after that per an industrial facility. That shows that our attention should be actively directed to the utilization of New and Renewable Energy in school facilities. Therefore photovoltaics systems, lighting systems and solarthermal facilities of solar energy systems were analyzed in the LEED cases. Findings demonstrate that applications of solar energy systems in K-12 educational facilities have been executed more than those in higher educational facilities. However, K-12 educational facilities and higher educational facilities by private funds are not categorized as Green Buildings by Support for Making Green Buildings Act. That fact is needed to be amended. Besides that, design developments are needed for building integrated photovoltaics systems and solarthermal facilities in domestic educational facilities.

A Research on the Improvement of Dining Space Design at Elderly Welfare Facility (복지관의 경로식당 공간 디자인의 개선 방안에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose : Balanced meal service is very important for the elderly to maintain good physical health. Good food and comfortable dining environment is also important for the elderly to prevent emotional depression. The purpose of this study is to investigate current problems of dining space in Korean elderly welfare facility. De-institutionalizing dining environment of elderly welfare facility will bring more meaningful social interactions among elderly users. Methods : Through literature research and case studies of welfare centers in the US and Japan, Elderly Dining Space Checklist was developed. Dining spaces of 11 welfare facilities in Seoul was analyzed by this checklist. It was administered by interior designers as well as facility staffs to achieve more credible results. Questionnaire for the elderly users of those dining space also prosecuted to broaden knowledge for creating improved environment. Results : Dining spaces of elderly welfare centers are lack of privacy and furnitures are not comfortable enough for the general users as well as wheelchair users. Elderly dining space users are seeking more private and comfortable spaces for the social communications. Implications : Dining environment for the elderly in Korea should develop more de-institutionalized design concepts.

Determination of Design Capacity for NPS Pollutant Treatment Facilities by Long-term Simulation in Urban Areas (장기모의를 통한 도시유역 비점오염원 처리장치 용량 산정)

  • In this study, a method to determine the design capacities of nonpoint source (NPS) pollutant treatment facilities in urban areas was suggested. A facility capacity to treat 80 percent of total SS discharge was estimated by 2-year rainfall - runoff - build-up and wash-off simulation at Goonja drainage district in Seoul. For wash-off simulation, four wash-off models (EMC, RC, EXP, and Joo model) were used. As the results, 80 percent of total SS discharge could be treated with only 7.7~31.4% facility capacity of peak flow. The suggested method and results will provide a guideline to determine design capacities of NPS pollutant treatment facility in urban areas.

  • Global environment is getting deteriorated at an alarming rate. Eco-school could be one of the effective solutions to project our environment and a good sample of architecture to economize in total energies, resources and greenhouse gases. In case of our country, the study of eco-school planning is not sufficient compared with other countries, so this paper would be a good study on the indoor environment of the classroom by surveying their opinions and ideas from the group of users in school facility. The result of this study shows that the proper installation of building equipment and nature ventilation system is necessary to provide delightful environment for the students and to save the energy. To ensure that we have adequate saving and protection it is necessary to change the existing appraisal standard.
