This study investigated the factors affecting the procedures of becoming a scientist. Interview was used as a research method for deep understanding of individual career choice procedures. Interviews for individual scientists were conducted for about 60 minutes in their offices and all the interviews were tape-recorded. A total of 34 scientists who received some representative science awards in Korea during 1990 - 2001 were sampled. They were all men. But the interview was conducted with 30 scientists. The investigation was based on the framework that was composed of the following four categories: personal ability, home environment, school environment, and sociocultural environment. And each category had several factors as follows: personal ability consisted of the meta-ability to figure out the aptitude and the self-ability and the achievement; home environment consisted of parents, brothers and sisters, relatives, and hobby; school environment consisted of teachers, friends, club activity; sociocultural environment consisted of event, mass media, social recognition and social prospect. From the analysis of the career choice procedure of the scientists it was appeared that the meta-ability for personal ability, the parental influence particularly by father for home environment, science teacher and professor for school environment, and social prospect for sociocultural environment were important. In conclusion, most of the scientists made an important decision for their future career when they were the 12th grade and 1st year in university, and they considered intrinsic factor such as self-interest and aptitude and extrinsic factor such as social prospect. However intrinsic factor related to science teacher and professor and extrinsic factor related to fathers' advice.
Since the 1990s, Korea has been developing various policies and materials for the improvement of basic learning abilities. In this study, the cases of policies for underachievers in Korea and the US were compared and analyzed the programs for mathematics underachievers in elementary school with Chuncheon office of education and Seattle public schools. All of them started from the point of relief of underachievers, but they differed in the process of operating them specifically. This study suggests the followings. First, active utilization of vacation programs to solve problems such as low-income meal service, prevention of stigma effects, securing teacher's instruction time, teacher-instructor cooperation. Second, the necessity of detailed activity-centered textbooks that underachievers can explore with interest in mathematics learning and easy to use by teachers. Third, specific cooperation for inducing interest of their own children's learning and forming close ties between parents and teachers. Fourth, program analysis by a professional evaluation group to improve the quality of underachiever program.

This study was designed to determine the Internet game and smartphone usage status of senior elementary school students. Data were collected from 6 October 2018 to 30 September 2019, and 1618 subjects were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. As a result of the study, the I-GUESS rating was 6.1% in the high-risk group, and, the S-scale ratios were 10.1% for the potential-risk group and 0.8% for the high-risk group. Physical problems related to Internet games and using smartphones were experienced by 36.0% of the students, with eye fatigue being the highest at 20.4%. Emotional problems were found in 18.5% of the students, with anger being the highest at 6.8%. Social problems were experienced by 21.8% of the students, conflicts with parents being the highest at 10.3%. As a result of surveying the main content based on S-scale and I-GUESS, it was found that the higher the S-scale ratio and the I-GUESS rating, the more broadcast content was used. The correlation between I-GUESS rating and S-scale ratio showed that the higher the I-GUESS rating, the higher the S-scale ratio, and the higher the S-scale ratio, the higher the I-GUESS rating. Future research is necessary to develop an intervention program for elementary school students from a preventive perspective.

This study analyzes the moderating effects of the self-esteem on the life satisfaction of 2,040 middle school senior students using the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2012 Data (KCYPS 2012) provided by the National Youth Policy Institute. The path analysis of how environmental characteristics, such as parents, friends, and school, affect life satisfaction, is based on four groups of self-esteem, categorized by positive and negative self-evaluation levels. The analysis suggests that groups with higher levels of positive self-evaluation have closer relevance in more paths than other groups. Furthermore, in groups with higher levels of negative self-evaluation, negative effects on life satisfaction are offset by positive self-evaluation. These results suggest research associated with the mental health of adolescents and their self-esteem should be performed according to two separate levels of self-esteem: positive self-evaluation and negative self-evaluation. Since low levels of negative self-evaluation doesn't necessarily guarantee high levels of positive self-evaluation, counseling for adolescents needs to have different tracks, addressing positive and negative self-evaluation levels.

Results : The findings of the study were as follows. 1. In children, the ratio(DMF rate)of the dental caries experience in permanent teeth, appeared higher for men than women. Divided by grade level, the ratio of caries experience in the permanent teeth(DMF rate) generally appear higher in older than young. Thus between the child's gender and grade level by the ratio of caries experience in the permanent teeth(DMF rate) showed the statistically significant differences (p<0.05). 2. Between the socioeconomic characteristics of mothers and the children's level of dental caries experiences, not showed the statistically significant difference.(p>0.05). 3. The significant difference showed between the dental caries levels of the children and the mother's oral health care behavior - a toothbrush replacement period, mother's broken teeth, mothers guidances of the brushing after snacks for children(p<0.05). Conclusions : The mother's oral health attitudes and behaviors can affect to their children's oral care habits. Therefore The mother themselves should have the right proper habit of oral health care, so that in oral health care mothers should be the model for their children. Institutionally more systematic and detailed oral health educational program in conjunction with the family is needed.
This study examined the influence of the nutrient intake status, dietary habit, and academic stress of elementary school children on their academic achievement. Two-hundred and twenty-four fifth-graders in Bucheon-si, Gyeonggido were surveyed. The study included the 24 hr-recall, anthropometric measurement, assessment of stress level and academic achievement. The subjects were normal in height, weight and Rohrer index, but higher percentage of underweight was seen in girls and vice versa in boys. The overall nutrient intake and dietary habits were fairly good, but Ca and folate intake was less than 75% KDRIs and dietary habits of boys were inferior. Academic stress level of all the subjects was not high. In terms of academic performance and its relations with nutrient intake, the more the amount of nutrient intake, the higher the academic performance. Especially, it was true for the energy, protein, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and n-6 fatty acid intakes (p < 0.05). The overall academic performance was higher for those who eating-out less frequently. Children with higher comprehensive dietary habit scores have shown better academic performance (p < 0.05). Less stress implied to those shown higher academic achievement while those with relatively poor academic performance showed high stress level since their grade did not improve as much as they anticipated. In conclusion, the academic achievement was higher for those who have a better nutritional status, better dietary habits, and lower stress levels. Therefore, it is critical for nutritionists, parents, and teachers to improve the nutritional status and dietary habits as well as to help them manage their stress levels, which will eventually contribute to an enhanced academic performance.

According to the 6th revision of curriculum. home economics has been taught to girls and boys. But some of curriculum developers raises another questions on home economics education. They argue that home economics is a subject which prepares students for the demand of their day-to-day lives. but they can manage their lives well without school learning. The purpose of this study is to explore the educational values of home economics in secondary education from the gender-sensitive approach. For this study, a literature survey on the nature of home economic education in secondary education and the content analysis on 12 secondary school textbooks of Home Economics were employed. The results are as follows : First, the educational values of home economics education should not be underestimated. The aims of home economics education is to help students grew into a independent person by managing their daily lives. The home is charged with fostering a side of our life which we might call Personal, private. intimate and nurturing. The management of the home needs good skills and attitudes. and many knowledges on the child rearing, family relation, marriage, love and sex, which can not be successfully acquired without school learning. And home economics education for boys and girls can help break down the barriers between the sexes because it can change the attitudes of students regarding the private sphere. which is traditionally where women have worked. Second. most of contents of Home Economics were composed of the women-oriented contents. There was a trend still describing that domestic labor mainly be carried out by mother. And the ideas that only the family consisting of two parents and their children is normal were founded. Finally directions of development of the Home Economics Education are suggested.
