  • Human action recognition received many interest in the computer vision community. Most of the existing methods focus on either construct robust descriptor from the temporal domain, or computational method to exploit the discriminative power of the descriptor. In this paper we explore the idea of using local action attributes to form an action descriptor, where an action is no longer characterized with the motion changes in the temporal domain but the local semantic description of the action. We propose an novel framework where introduces local action attributes to represent an action for the final human action categorization. The local action attributes are defined for each body part which are independent from the global action. The resulting attribute descriptor is used to jointly model human action to achieve robust performance. In addition, we conduct some study on the impact of using body local and global low-level feature for the aforementioned attributes. Experiments on the KTH dataset and the MV-TJU dataset show that our local action attribute based descriptor improve action recognition performance.

  • During bone remodeling, there is requirement of differentiation of osteoblastic cells. Previously, we identified proteins differentially expressed in soft tissue during bone healing. Of these proteins, we focused the effect of LTF on differentiation of osteoblast. In order to analyze the osteogenic ability of LTF, we treated conditioned media collected from human LTF-stably transfected HEK293T cells into osteoblastic MC3T3-E1. The results showed that the activity and expression of alkaline phosphatase were increased in MC3T3-E1 cells treated with conditioned media containing LTF in dose- and time-dependent manner. At the same time, we observed the significant increase of the expression of osteoblastic genes, such as ALP, BSP, COL1A1, and OCN, and along with matrix mineralization genes, such as DMP1 and DMP2, in LTF conditioned media-treated groups. Moreover, the result of treating recombinant human LTF directly into osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 showed the same pattern of treating conditioned media containing LTF. Our study demonstrated that LTF constitutively enhances osteoblastic differentiation via induction of osteoblastic genes and activation of matrix mineralization in MC3T3-E1 cells.

  • The incomplete saturation and the void formation during the resin infiltration into fibrous porous media in the resin transfer molding process cause failure in the final product during its service. In order to better understand flow behavior during the filling process, a finite-element scheme for transient flow simulation across the micro-structured fibrous media is developed in the present work. A volume-of- fluid (VOF) method has been incorporated in the Eulerian frame to capture the evolution of flow front and the vertical periodic boundary condition has been combined to avoid unwanted wall effect. In the microscale simulation, we investigated the transient filling process in various fiber structures and discussed the mechanism leading to the flow fingering in the case of random fiber distribution. Effects of the filling pressure, the shear-thinning behavior of fluid and the volume fraction on the flow front have been investigated for both intra-tow and the inter-tow flows in dual-scale fiber tow models.

  • The news and views of Pakistani television channels are extensively shared on digital media for information or analysis where the general public discusses overt and covert agendas by mentioning their factual and presentational style. This study contributes to the contemporary studies of media perception through focus group interviews with 72 randomly selected master's and bachelor's students studying Media and Communication at the School of Media and Communication Studies, University of Management and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan to provide information about the feelings and observations of future journalists and media literates. In summary, the findings of our research exposed the negative perception of Pakistani electronic media among the participants due to what they perceived as biased, inaccurate, and unethical reporting.

  • To reduce the grain size and the media noise in a typical CrMo/CoCrPtB longitudinal media, a sputtering process which includes the exposure of oxygen onto the surface of CrW$_x$ (x=0, 25, 50, 75, 100 at.%) and CrTi$_{15}$ seedlayers with the thickness of 0.5 nm have been utilized. The main results are: (1) the media grain size and the media noise are reduced when using CrW$_x$ (x=0, 25, 50 at.%) seedlayers, and not reduced when using CrTils or CrW$_x$ (x=75, 100 at.%) seedlayers, (2) AES and RHEED results suggest that W seedlayer, which has the highest melting point, forms layer-like film with very small and dense island grain, due to its high free surface energy and low mobility. On the other hand, CrW$_{50}$ and Cr seedlayers, which have lower melting point than W seedlayer, form island film, (3) to effectively reduce the media grain size and improve the media signal to noise ratio, it is essential to utilize a very thin Cr-based seedlayer with high affinity for oxygen and which forms island-like structure, such as CrW$_{50}$ seedlayer.

  • A new depth filter media was designed and samples of flat sheet as well as cartridge assembly were prepared and tested to evaluate the filtration performance and compare with the commercial product. The arrangement of the depth filter media layers is important to reach the optimal filtration parameters like filter pressure drop, particle collection efficiency and dust holding capacity. Initially, both flat sheet samples of new media and commercial product have been tested using standard test units. Tests with new depth filter media cartridges of various pleat count were conducted in order to find the optimal pleat count which would represent the lowest pressure drop. These tests give an insight on how the pleat count and the assembly configuration affect the performance of the depth filter media cartridge. By comparing the samples with a commercial product we could confirm relatively high filtration performance of the sample cartridge with pleat count 150 made of new depth filter media. The cartridge with the same pleat count exhibits better performance without the outer mesh.

  • Background Nonliving chickens are commonly used as a microvascular anastomosis training model. However, previous studies have investigated only a few types of vessel, and no study has compared the characteristics of the various vessels. The present study evaluated the anatomic characteristics of various chicken vessels as a training model. Methods Eight vessels-the brachial artery, basilic vein, radial artery, ulnar artery, ischiatic artery and vein, cranial tibial artery, and common dorsal metatarsal artery-were evaluated in 26 fresh chickens and 30 chicken feet for external diameter (ED) and thicknesses of the tunica adventitia and media. The dissection time from skin incision to application of vessel clamps was also measured. Results The EDs of the vessels varied. The ischiatic vein had the largest ED of $2.69{\pm}0.33mm$, followed by the basilic vein ($1.88{\pm}0.36mm$), ischiatic artery ($1.68{\pm}0.24mm$), common dorsal metatarsal artery ($1.23{\pm}0.23mm$), cranial tibial artery ($1.18{\pm}0.19mm$), brachial artery ($1.08{\pm}0.15mm$), ulnar artery ($0.82{\pm}0.13mm$), and radial artery ($0.56{\pm}0.12mm$), and the order of size was consistent across all subjects. Thicknesses of the tunica adventitia and media were also diverse, ranging from $74.09{\pm}19.91{\mu}m$ to $158.66{\pm}40.25{\mu}m$ (adventitia) and from $31.2{\pm}7.13{\mu}m$ to $154.15{\pm}46.48{\mu}m$ (media), respectively. Mean dissection time was <3 minutes for all vessels. Conclusions Our results suggest that nonliving chickens can provide various vessels with different anatomic characteristics, which can allow trainees the choice of an appropriate microvascular anastomosis training model depending on their purpose and skillfulness.
