  • This paper presents the methodology and results for the investigation of the structural safety of 40 aged underground water tanks to support the weight of photovoltaic (PV) systems that were supposed to be placed on their roof reinforced concrete (RC) slabs. The investigation procedure included (1) review of available documents; (2) visual inspection of the roof RC slabs; (3) carrying out a series of nondestructive (ND) tests; and (4) analysis of results. Out of the 40 tanks, eleven failed the visual inspection phase and were discarded from further investigation. The roof RC slabs of the tanks that passed the visual inspection were subjected to a series of ND tests that included infrared thermography, impact echo, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), Schmidt hammer, concrete core compressive strength, and water-soluble chloride content. The NDT results proved that eight more tanks were not suitable to support the PV systems. Based on the results of the visual inspection and testing, a probabilistic decision-making criterion was established to reach a decision regarding the structural integrity of the roof slabs. The study concluded that the condition of the drainage filter was essential in protecting the tanks and its intact presence can be used as a strong indication of the structural integrity of the roof RC slabs.

  • Los Angeles abrasion loss test has usally been applied to the quarry for the purpose of aggregate hardness estimation. 324 blocks from 25 sites of Kyeongsang basin samples of sedimentary rock were examined and tested in laboratary. This paper found that L. A. abrasion loss test is a good method to estimate engineering index such as uniaxial compressive strength, elastic modulus, indirect tensile strength, point load strength index, Schmidt hammer rebound value of sedimentary rocks with high correlation factor. Engineers will prefer L. A. abrasion loss test to the other one for design and construction as this method is quick and easy.

  • The Porous pavement gains popularity because of several benefits. It is to minimize hydro-planning condition, spraying condition, and splash to increase friction resistance, and decrease noise. Also, other studies showed that it is important to have appropriate porosity to reduce noise and water flush. The purpose of this study is an evaluation on the mechanical properties of asphalt pavements for surface course. In this study the specimen was manufactured using the Gyratory compactor in order to compact the strengthened surface course that involved the two-layer pavement. This study is conducted by using Marshall stability test(KS F 2377), Impact resonance test, Schmidt hammer test(KS F 2730), and the Uniaxial compression test(KS F 2314). Using the Uniaxial compression test and Schmidt hammer test, the values of compressive strength and bearing capacity were measured, and the modulus of elasticity for each specimen was respectively measured using the Uniaxial compression test, Impact Resonance test.

  • This is an foundational study to adequacy the non-destruction testing for the estimation of compressive strength of high strength concrete The results are as follows, In high strength concrete, H type is NR type rebound number rather than higher. The relation between rebound number and compressive strength of high strength concrete have lower coefficient. when compressive strength estimation of high strength concrete, it consider that rebound hardness test is not applied and should be consider to combined method or addition method.

  • When a concrete member is damaged by fire accident, it can lose its strength. And the degradation rate of losing its strength affected by many environmental conditions. But there is few research for equation for strength evaluation of fire-damaged concrete. Besides, it is impossible to destruct structural member from the building for the evaluation. So, I will suggest a new equation for strength evaluation of fire-damaged RC beam using non-destructive test. For this purpose, the researchers are exploring the performance of non-destructive testing methods using Ultrasonic test, Schmidt Hammer test and Coring test against fire damaged concrete specimen.

  • In this study, the influence of chemical admixture on early strength development of concrete is discussed. According to the results, fluidity with variation of kinds of chemical admixture is lower in the case of acceleration type than in the case of normal type. Setting time of naphthalene acceleration type is shortened by I hour, and that of melamine is nearly same, but that of polycarbonic acid is somewhat retarded in comparison with that of naphthalene normal type. Early compressive strength gains 5MPa in about 18hours regardless of the kinds of chemical admixture. But as time elapses, compressive strength is higher in order of polycarbonic acid, naphthalene and melamine type. The relativity between compressive strength and the rebound value of P-type schmidt hammer is also favorable at early age, and compressive strength of 5MPa is estimated at the rebound value of 22.

  • One of the most general methods that can evaluate the rippability is the seismic exploration. However, most field engineers have hardly used the seismic exploration. Instead of using the seismic exploration, they have usually used rock hammer and naked eyes to confirm the degree of rippability for soil, ripping rock and blasting rock. Therefore, to excavate the ground rationally, it is required to establish a quantitative criterion that can be used for distinguishing rippability. In this study, we find out the characteristics of rock strength through laboratory and field tests. The weathering condition of rock exposed to air due to excavation of soil layer and the variation of rock strength caused by weathering were investigated. A relationship between rock strength values that are obtained from uniaxial compression test, slaking durability test, point load test, schmidt hammer test and absorption ratio test is analyzed. The relationship is expressed in a form of equation by which we can evaluate the rock strengths obtained from simple laboratory and field tests. To evaluate rippability in a reasonable manner, a quantitative approach is proposed and a check list of rippability is developed based on the proposed methodology. It is recommended to modify the proposed method for evaluation of rippability in the field.

  • The rebound test using Schmidt hammer is most popular method to estimate strength of concrete. However, this method is inappropriate for Seoul Metro underground structures due to unsuitable aging effects. Consequently, the strength presumption equation of underground structures is proposed according to the correlation of uniaxial compressive strength, rebound test results and age of concrete. To achieve this, the results of in-depth inspection of Seoul Metro underground structures performed annually for last 8 years was anlayed.

  • This study estimates relationships between physical and chemical weathering indices of various rock types and topographical relief. Physical weathering properties such as rock strength and joint and chemical weathering indices such as the $SiO_2/Al2O_3$, CIA and WPI were analyzed from 18 rock outcrops in mountain and valley areas consisting of 9 rock types. The results indicate that the elevation and relief of topography increase physical strength of rock increases. It can be suggested that the total r(rock-mass strength rating) and R(rock rebound strength by Schmidt Hammer) are most useful indices as a quantitative weathering property factor to explain formative causes of topographical relief. The results also suggest that rock types such as sandstone, granite, gneiss and schist are most suitable to explain meaningful difference in topographical relief with the physical and chemical weathering indices.
