  • Using laser ablation technique carbon thin films were deposited on Si(100) substrate as a function of substrate temperature. In this study, the surface morphologic, structural and field emission properties of these carbon thin films were investigated using Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and a diode technique, respectively. With increasing of the substrate temperature, the surface morphologies were changed significantly. Moreover, the intensity of D-band and the full width at half maximum of these bands were dependent on substrate temperatures. As the substrate temperature was increased, the field emission properties were improved. As the result, we find that the field emission properties of the films were changed significantly with the substrate temperature and structural features of carbon than films.

  • With the advancement of micro-systems and nanotechnology, the need for ultra-precision fabrication techniques has been steadily increasing. In this paper, a novel nano-structure fabrication process that is based on the fundamental understanding of nano-scale tribological interaction is introduced. The process, which is called Mechano-Chemical Scanning Probe Lithography (MC-SPL), has two steps, namely, mechanical scribing for the removal of a resist layer and selective chemical etching on the scribed regions. Organic monolayers are used as a resist material, since it is essential for the resist to be as thin as possible in order to fabricate more precise patterns and surface structures. The results show that high resolution patterns with sub-micrometer scale width can be fabricated on both silicon and various metal surfaces by using this technique.

  • We present investigations of the surface micromachining for transparent glass substrate, e.g. soda lime glass using tightly focused 800nm Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser. In this study, experiment conditions such as laser intensity, scanning speed, focus position were controlled as variable parameters to decide optimal machining conditions. This study shows clearly that laser intensity and scanning speed are dominant factors for good surface morphology. Using the optimal conditions, grooves with 50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ line width were fabricated on glass substrate and their surface morphologies were investigated from SEM image.

  • Amorphous carbon thin films were deposited using laser ablation technique on Si(100) substrates at different temperatures. In this study, effects of the substrate temperature on the properties of amorphous carbor, films were systematically investigated. The surface morphologic and structural properties of the films were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and raman spectroscope, respectively. With increasing of the substrate temperature, the surface morphologies were changed significantly. Moreover the intensity ratio of D-band and G-band and the full width at half maximum of these bands were dependent on substrate temperatures.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the consistency of external ear measurements obtained by electronic digital caliper, photocopier scanning and digital photographic methods. Photogrammetric measurements were made after image editing software was used to optimize the brightness, contrast, size and image clarity. The CorelDRAW dimension tool was used to create a dimension line that measured the vertical and horizontal length between any two landmarks. Results of repeated measures analysis of variance revealed no significant differences in length and width of the pinna between the three methods. The reliability of the three measurement techniques showed a high degree of consistency. Further study and efforts could be extended to measurement hands, foots and facial dimensions by present techniques.

  • A versatile incoherent optical processing system is developed and analyzed in detail, in which an acousto-optic modulator is used to generate the temporal offset frequency for heterodyning and an optical scanner to process the input object in scanning mode. The operational characteristics of the systems are studied with respect to spatial filtering in terms of the spectral width change of the light source, the temporal offset frequency, and a scanning rate. To enhance the system's capability, two schemes for tuning the system's OTF, structural tuning and defocused object tuning, are also developed and verified with the MTF measurements and computer calculations.

  • Various nanometer-scale structures are fabricated on hydrogen-passivated p-type Si(100) surface by scanning probe microscopy(SPM). The hydrogen-passivation is performed by dipping the samples in diluted 10% HF solution for one min.. Pt alloy wires are used for tips and the tips are made by cutting the wires at 45$^{\circ}$ slanted. Various line features are fabricated in various bias voltage. The optimal structure is the line of about 30 nm width on 1.7V bias voltage and 1 nA tunneling current.

  • A scanning electron microscopic study on the glochidium and glochidial encystment of Anodonta archefomis on the host fish Carassius auratus was conducted. The shape of the glochidium is apparently subtriangular and its average size is 270${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ $\times$ 260${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ $\times$ 145${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The glochidial shell valves are of the same size, kept together by a ligament of 50.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in length and 5.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in width. (omitted)

  • Sector scanner which has a conical end is used to image through the intercostal space because heart is protected by the ribs. Cardiac data published all around the world were also obtained by sector scanner. Although scanners being used in every small animal practice and animal hospital at college in Korea include convex ape and linear type, linear type is not appropriate f3r cardiac scan because of a wide contact surface. The purpose of this study is to establish ultrasonographic images of normal cardiac structures by measuring shape, size of reflectable cardiac structure according to restraint position in scanning normal heart of the puppies with 6.5 MHz convex scanner(SonoAce 4500, Medison, Korea) used in our veterinary teaching hospital, Seoul national university. Seventeen male and female puppies considered having healthy hear by X-ray and clinical examination are used feom April to July 1994. Scanning point selection of probe head and the distinction of imaged cardiac structures were accomplished by necropsy and cardiac scanning performed through thoracotomy under general anesthesia. At 10 o'clock position of transducer(at an angle of 30$^{\circ}$ between imaginary line from elbow joint to 3rd sternum and probe head, 60$^{\circ}$ from body surface, 4th intercostal space of right thorax) with the marker of scanner toward the head of dogs right atrium, left atrium and left ventricle were observed in 2, 3, 4, 5 intercostal space(2cm from the sternum) of experimental dog positioned ventrodorsally under general anesthesia. Under these conditions, the numerical values of imaged diastolic hear are as follows : the distance from skin to apex(mean$\pm$S.D) 47.53$\pm$6.94mm, thickness of left ventricular wall 6.00$\pm$1.60mm, length of left ventricle 16.27$\pm$5.31mm, width of left ventricle 15,33$\pm$4.25mm, length of left atrium 12.33$\pm$3.82mm, width of left atrium 11. 33$\pm$3.94mm, length of right atrium 1.00$\pm$2.41mm, width of right atrium 11.21$\pm$2.76mm and the area of left ventricle 270.92$\pm$109.81mm$^2$, area of left atrium 98.00$\pm$41.08mm$^2$, area of right atrium 62.75$\pm$21.04mm$^2$.
