  • The purpose of this research is development of radar data assimilation observed at Jindo S-band radar The accurate observational data assimilation system is one of the important factors to meteorological numerical prediction of the region scale. Diagnostic analysis system LAPS(Local Analysis and Prediction System) developed by US FSL(Forecast Systems Laboratory) is adopted assimilation system of the Honam district forecasting system. The LAPS system was adjusted in calculation environment in the Honam district. And the improvement in the predictability by the application of the LAPS system was confirmed by the experiment applied to Honam district local severe rain case of generating 22 July 2003. The results are as follows: 1) Precipitation amounts of Gwangju is strong associated with the strong in lower level from analysis of aerological data. This indicated the circulation field especially, 850hPa layer, acts important role to precipitation in Homan area. 2) Wind in coastal area tends to be stronger than inland area and radar data show the strong wind in conversions zone around front. 3) Radar data assimilation make the precipitation area be extended and maximum amount of precipitation be smaller. 4) In respect to contribution rate of different height wind field on precipitation variation, radar data assimilation of upper level is smaller than that of lower level.

  • We focused on improvement in simulation of wind fields for the complex coastal area. Local Analysis and Prediction System(LAPS) was used as a data assimilation method to improve initial conditions. Case studies of different LAPS inputs were performed to compare improvement of wind fields. Five cases have been employed : I) non data assimilation, II) all available data, III) AWS, buoy, QuikSCAT, IV) AWS, buoy, wind profiler, V) AWS, buoy, AMEDAS. Data assimilation can supplement insufficiency of the mesoscale model which does not represent detailed terrain effect and small scale atmospheric flow fields. Result assimilated all available data showed a good agreement to the observations rather than other cases and estimated veil the local meteorological characteristics including sea breeze and up-slope winds. Result using wind profiler data was the next best thing. This implies that data assimilation with many high-resolution sounding data could contribute to the improvements of good initial condition in the complex coastal area. As a result, these indicated that effective data assimilation process and application of the selective LAPS inputs played an important role in simulating wind fields accurately in a complex area.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the wind energy resources with high spatial resolution in Sunghak and Guduck mountains in Busan Metropolitan area under the various atmospheric stabilities. The numerical model used in this research is A2C (Atmosphere to CFD), mainly applied to assess the regional scale and microscale meteorological phenformin. Wind under the strong atmospheric stability moves around mountain side smoothly due to the strong potential energy. On the other hand, the cavity region on the lee side of mountain tends to be created and expanded as the atmospheric stability decrease. Annually the average distribution of wind power density, turbulence kinetic energy, and vertical wind shear help to explain quantitatively that wind resource near the northern side of Guduck mountain top is more suitable to establish wind energy complex than that in any other regions in the target area.

  • The previous studies for dynamic behavior of spatial structure have been zoomed in on roof structure by numerical analytic method. But the roof structure of real spatial structures is supported by lower structure as column and wall. So, when earthquake is occurred, it is predicted that dynamic behavior of roof structure is affected by lower structure. Therefore, on this study, natural period characteristics of arch structures are analyzed according to section, length and the modulus of elasticity of brass column and polycarbonate column and additional mass of roof structure by the scale-down model of arch structure as the most simple structure of spatial structures. The changes of natural periods are generally alike. But, when Polycarbonate column is connected to roof structure, the change of natural period for change of section is relatively large. That means that change of section and section and length of column and additional mass of roof structure have less influence on change of stiffness because the modulus of elasticity of brass is relatively large.

  • Matching two images is an essential step for many computer vision applications. A new approach to the scale and rotation invariant scene matching, using linear features, is presented. Scene or model images are described by a set of linear features approximating edge information, which can be obtained by the conventional edge detection, thinning, and piecewise linear approximation. A set of candidate parameters are hypothesized by mapping the angular difference and a new distance measure to the Hough space and by detecting maximally consistent points. These hypotheses are verified by a fast linear feature matching algorithm composed of a single-step relaxation and a Hough technique. The proposed method is shown to be much faster than the conventional one where the relaxation process is repeated until convergence, while providing matching performance robust to the random alteration of the linear features, without a priori information on the geometrical transformation parameters.

  • For deep submicron (DSM) very large scale integrated circuits (VLSI), it is well known that interconnects have become the dominant factor in determining the overall circuit performance. Buffer insertion is an effective technique of interconnect optimization. When a net has an excessive propagation delay, one or more buffers can be inserted to reduce the delay. Buffers also reduce the crosstalk between neighboring wires. While many conventional methods insert buffers net by net. we have developed new techniques in which buffer locations are simultaneously optimized for all nets. This is to avoid the difficulties in finding the right ordering of nets for buffer insertion. since several nets may compete for a buffer location. We also study buffer insertion with multiple fan-out nets to optimize critical path delay. Elmore delay model is used for delay calculation and the number of buffers for each net is determined to optimize the delay.

  • This paper proposes a novel method for the recognition of the inverse synthetic aperture radar(ISAR) image of multiple targets flying in formation. Rather than separating the ISAR image of each target, the proposed method combines an ISAR image obtained by fusing the ISAR images in the training database. Fusion is conducted by optimizing the non-linear problem whose parameters are the aspect angle and the target location. Assuming that the aspect angle is properly estimated, the proposed method estimates the number of the targets and their locations by optimizing the template matching using PSO. In simulations using the F-16 scale model, the efficiency of the proposed method was demonstrated by yielding the ISAR image identical to that of targets in formation.

  • This study was deviced to apply fuzzy concepts to pavement serviceability evaluation. An evaluation model was developed based on workmanship of pavement during construction, external load on pavement and current distress level. Five rating fuzzy sets, three weight fuzzy sets were developed based on the concept that the most appropriate balance was achieved in Gd which was established for grading the fuzzy overall rating results. Evaluation criteria and corresponding fuzzy rating scale were suggested. A computer program for evaluating serviceability based on the criteria was developed. The program was operated by simply typing in input data on each question and producing output as Gd on the screen. lt was possible to estimate the pavement serviceability level well using this fuzzy-set-based approach.

  • Load managing method on road became necessary since overloaded vehicles occur damage on road facilities and existing systems for preventing this damage still show many problems. Accordingly, efficient managing system for preventing overloaded vehicles could be organized by using the road itself as a scale by applying genetic algorithm to analyze the load and the drive information of vehicles. First of all, accurate analysis of load using the behavior of road itself is needed for solving illegal axle manipulation problems of overloaded vehicles and for installing intelligent embedded load analyzing system. Accordingly in this study, to use the behavior of road, the transformation was measured by installing underground box type indoor model and indoor experiment was held using genetic algorithm and 10% error were checked.

  • The steady state close-contact melting phenomenon occurring between a phase change material and an isothermally heated flat plate with relative motion is investigated analytically, in which the effects of vertical convection in the liquid film and solid-liquid density difference are incorporated simultaneously. Not only the scale analysis is conducted to estimate a priori qualitative dependence of system variables on characteristic parameters, but also an analytical solution to a set of simplified model equations is obtained to specify the effects under consideration. These two results are consistent with each other, in that the vertical convection affects both the solid descending velocity and the film thickness, and that the density difference alters only the solid descending velocity. While the effect of vertical convection can be characterized conveniently by a newly introduced temperature gradient factor which asymptotically approaches the unity/zero with decreasing/increasing the Stefan number, that of density difference is represented by the liquid-to-solid density ratio. It is shown that the solid descending velocity depends linearly on the density ratio, and that the ratios of solid descending velocity, film thickness and friction coefficient to the conduction solution are proportional to 3/4, 1/4 and -1/4 powers of the temperature gradient factor, respectively. Also, established is the fact that the effect of convection can be legitimately neglected in the analysis for the range of the Stefan number less than 0.1.
