  • This paper presents a two-time scale approach for vibration reduction of a high speed Cartesian manipulator. High speed manipulators would be subject to mechanical vibration due to high inertia forces acting on linkages. To achieve high throughput capability, such motion induced vibration would have to be damped quickly, to reduce settling time of the manipulator end-effector. This paper develops a two-time scale model fer a structurally-flexible Cartesian manipulator. Based on the two-time scale model, a composite controller consisting of a computed torque method for the slow time-scale rigid body subsystem, and a linear quadratic state-feedback regulator for the fast time-scale flexible subsystem, is designed. Simulation results show that the proposed two time-scale controller yields good performance in attenuating structural vibration arising due to excitation from inertial forces.

  • We developed a new PDP gray scale implementation method on the basis of the quantized memory addressing(QMA) principle. We defined three wall charge states; 'fully-on', 'off', and 'half-on', by controlling the width of address pulses. With these three wall charge state, we were able to express 255 level gray scale with only 7 sub-fields. Furthermore, in contrast to the conventional driving methods, the sub-field combinations for any two adjacent gray levels differ by only 1 sub-field, at worst, and therefore, eliminate the dynamic false contours. Since this method use 7 sub-field, the sustain discharge Period is increased by more than $70\%$ compared to the 12 sub-field method which reduces the dynamic false contours.

  • Efforts have been made in this paper to develop the measuring device for the insulation performance of full scale NO96 LNG CCS. The facility was designed to maintain environmental conditions which are similar to operation conditions of full scale LNG CCS. In the facility, the heat sink boundary was kept cryogenic temperature by cold chamber which contains liquefied nitrogen and heat source boundary was made by external case heated by natural convection. Heat Flow Meter method (HFM) was applied to this facility, hence Heat Flux Sensors (HFS) were attached to specimen. The equivalent thermal conductivity of full scale NO96 unit box was targeted to measure and PUF of same size was used for the calibration test. Additionally, the finite element analysis was carried out to check the performance of the developed test facility and experimental results were also compared with those predicted by the numerical method.

  • This Paper Proposes the test pieces of X, Y and Z axes to compensate the shape distortion of Selective Laser Sintering(SLS) parts resulting from the phase change during the sintering process. In no case of the proposed compensation test pieces of X, Y axes the accurate rates of shrinkage can be measured with the reduction of curling which is obtained from adjustment of build orientation and the formula used to get scale factors are proposed with the shrinkage rates of them. The scale factors of X, Y and Z axes are generated by building up proposed compensation test pieces. The generated scale iactors are required to satisfy the dimensional accuracy even if there are changes of the build position and the size of SLS parts in the build chamber. For this reason, it is proposed that the build positions and the size be considered to be noise factors against the compensation test pieces and a method is also proposed that scale factors be selected to robustly maintain the dimensional accuracy of SLS parts under the actual operating conditions with the application of the Taguchi Method.

  • Recognizing plant species based on leaf images is challenging because of the large inter-class variation and inter-class similarities among different plant species. The effective extraction of leaf descriptors constitutes the most important problem in plant leaf recognition. In this paper, a multi-scale angular description method is proposed for fast and accurate leaf recognition and retrieval tasks. The proposed method uses a novel scale-generation rule to develop an angular description of leaf contours. It is parameter-free and can capture leaf features from coarse to fine at multiple scales. A fast Fourier transform is used to make the descriptor compact and is effective in matching samples. Both support vector machine and k-nearest neighbors are used to classify leaves. Leaf recognition and retrieval experiments were conducted on three challenging datasets, namely Swedish leaf, Flavia leaf, and ImageCLEF2012 leaf. The results are evaluated with the widely used standard metrics and compared with several state-of-the-art methods. The results and comparisons show that the proposed method not only requires a low computational time, but also achieves good recognition and retrieval accuracies on challenging datasets.

  • In the computer-aided detection (CAD) system of pulmonary nodules, a high false positive rate is common because the density and the computed tomography (CT) values of the vessel and the nodule in the CT images are similar, which affects the detection accuracy of pulmonary nodules. In this paper, a method of automatic detection of pulmonary nodules based on multi-scale enhancement filters and 3D shape features is proposed. The method uses an iterative threshold and a region growing algorithm to segment lung parenchyma. Two types of multi-scale enhancement filters are constructed to enhance the images of nodules and blood vessels in 3D lung images, and most of the blood vessel images in the nodular images are removed to obtain a suspected nodule image. An 18 neighborhood region growing algorithm is then used to extract the lung nodules. A new pulmonary nodules feature descriptor is proposed, and the features of the suspected nodules are extracted. A support vector machine (SVM) classifier is used to classify the pulmonary nodules. The experimental results show that our method can effectively detect pulmonary nodules and reduce false positive rates, and the feature descriptor proposed in this paper is valid which can be used to distinguish between nodules and blood vessels.

  • The aim of this study was to develop a new in-situ observation method and instrument in micro-scale to investigate the mechanism of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) initiation of Ni-base alloys in a high temperature water environment of pressurized water reactors (PWRs). A laser confocal microscope (LCM), an autoclave with diamond window view port, and a slow strain-rate tester with primary water circulation loop system were components of the instrument. Diamond window, one of the core components of the instrument, was selected based on its optical, chemical, and mechanical properties. LCM was used to observe the specimen in micro-scale, considering the experimental condition of a high-temperature primary water environment. Using in-situ method and instrument, it is possible to observe oxidation and deformation of specimen surface in micro-scale through the diamond window in a high-temperature primary water in real-time. The in-situ method and instrument developed in this work can be utilized to investigate effects of various factors on SCC initiation in a high-temperature water environment.

  • The sponge city construction is being carried out in China, and how to reasonably determine the scale of the sponge city facilities is a key point that the planners and designers should seriously solve. In this paper, taking determination of the sponge city facilities in a residential building in Shenzhen as an example, the layout and scales of the rainwater tanks, raingardens, ecological roofs and permeable pavements are decided by using the volumetric method and stormwater management model (SWMM). The calculated results by the two methods are compared and analyzed. The results show that the scales of the sponge city facilities determined by the two methods are almost the same, and it means that any method can be used to determine the scale of sponge city facilities. The volumetric method is relatively simple, and it is suggested to use to determine the scale of sponge city facilities during planning stage. While SWMM is more complex and requires a lot of input conditions, but it can provide the reduction effects of the sponge city facilities for rainfalls with different recurrence periods. Therefore, SWMM is recommended to use the calculation of the hydrological process of the sponge city facilities during the design stage.
