  • We shall propose several estimators for the scale parameter in the Pareto distribution with an unidentified exponential outlier when the scale parameter is functions of a known exposure level, and obtain expectations and variances for their proposed estimators. And we shall compare numerically efficiencies for proposed estimators of the scale and shape parameters in the small sample sizes.

  • In this study, we propose a nonparametric simultaneous test procedure for the location translation and scale parameters. We consider the Wilcoxon rank sum test for the location translation parameter and the Mood test for the scale parameter with the quadratic and maximal types of combining functions. Then we derive the limiting null distributions of the combining functions. We illustrate our procedure with an example and compare efficiency by obtaining the empirical powers through a simulation study. Finally, we discuss some interesting features related to the nonparametric simultaneous tests.

  • Treatment of a synthetic wastewater was made for the purpose of evaluating the performance of a pilot scale of an IFBBR. The particles used in this experiment were circular shaped polystyrene whose density was lower than that of water. The reactor volume was 400 l and the SCOD removal efficiency was more than 90% at HRT of 5 hrs. The IFBBR was successfully operated for 5 months without any significant problems. And it whs certained that IFBBR had a potential capability for treating wastewater.

  • Dynamical expansion of H II regions plays a key role in dispersing surrounding gas and therefore in limiting the efficiency of star formation in molecular clouds. We use analytic methods and numerical simulations to explore expansions of spherical dusty H II regions, taking into account the effects of direct radiation pressure, gas pressure, and total gravity of the gas and stars. Simulations show that the structure of the ionized zone closely follows Draine (2011)'s static equilibrium model in which radiation pressure acting on gas and dust grains balances the gas pressure gradient. Strong radiation pressure creates a central cavity and a compressed shell at the ionized boundary. We analytically solve for the temporal evolution of a thin shell, finding a good agreement with the numerical experiments. We estimate the minimum star formation efficiency required for a cloud of given mass and size to be destroyed by an HII region expansion. We find that typical giant molecular clouds in the Milky Way can be destroyed by the gas-pressure driven expansion of an H II region, requiring an efficiency of less than a few percent. On the other hand, more dense cluster-forming clouds in starburst environments can be destroyed by the radiation pressure driven expansion, with an efficiency of more than ~30 percent that increases with the mean surface density, independent of the total (gas+stars) mass. The time scale of the expansion is always smaller than the dynamical time scale of the cloud, suggesting that H II regions are likely to be a dominant feedback process in protoclusters before supernova explosions occurs.

  • This study is to estimate the recent changes in total factor productivity of 15 Korean adjacent water fisheries based on Malmquist productivity indices. The study adopted both input and output oriented productivity measures utilizing a hyperbola distance function. In addition to this point, the study also calculated the 95% confidence interval for the various components of the productivities in order to access the statistical significance of estimates using 2000 times of re-sampling process through the smoothed bootstraping. The results of the study showed us that there was 18% reduction in the overall total factor productivity during the study period from 2007 to 2011, which turned out to be 5% of annual decrease in productivity. The study found that the main reason of this decrease in total productivity is about 22% downward shift of a fisheries production function due to recent conditions of a devastated fishing ground. When we evaluated the statistical significance of changes in technical efficiency combining both pure technical and scale efficiency based on the 95% confidence intervals, we could not find any evidence of changes in those components of total factor productivity. When we accessed the productivity of the each of 15 adjacent water fisheries methods, only the large danish seine fisheries showed us about 7% increase in productivity. Even though the large trawling and the large tow-boat trawling revealed no changes in productivity, all of the other 12 fisheries suffered the decreases in productivities.

  • To propose proper vessel characteristics for sustainable fisheries in Korean waters, we analyzed the fishing capacity, scale efficiency and utilization of large pair-trawl vessels based on the database of catch, effort and vessel characteristics (gross tonnage and engine power) in 1990 by applying data envelopment analysis (DEA). The input factors were gross tonnage, horse power and days operated; whereas the output factor was expected catch by vessel characteristics. The optimal vessel types, selected based on the input-oriented technical efficiency and gross tonnages, was 100 GT with engine power <600 HP. The output-oriented unbiased estimate of capacity utilization (CD) decreased with increasing vessel tonnage. For the same tonnage vessels, the CD decreased with increasing engine power.

  • Energy shifting is an innovative method used to obtain the highest profit from the operation of energy storage systems (ESS) by controlling the charge and discharge schedules according to the electricity prices in a given period. Therefore, in this study, we propose an optimal charge and discharge scheduling method that performs energy shift operations derived from an ESS efficiency model. The efficiency model reflects the construction of power conversion systems (PCSs) and lithium battery systems (LBSs) according to the rated discharge time of a MWh-scale ESS. The PCS model was based on measurement data from a real system, whereas for the LBS, we used a circuit model that is appropriate for the MWh scale. In addition, this paper presents the application of a genetic algorithm to obtain the optimal charge and discharge schedules. This development represents a novel evolutionary computation method and aims to find an optimal solution that does not modify the total energy volume for the scheduling process. This optimal charge and discharge scheduling method was verified by various case studies, while the model was used to realize a higher profit than that realized using other scheduling methods.

  • The steady growth of seaborne trade has resulted in the further development of container ships, ports, and container terminals, and the operating efficiency of a container terminal is a decisive element for its competitive ability in international markets. The aim of this research is to evaluate the relative efficiency of Russian and South Korean container terminals. For this purpose, the output-oriented DEA was applied to 31 container terminals of Russian and South Korean seaports for the years from 2012 to 2014. The results indicate that Korean container terminals exhibited higher efficiency scores than their Russian counterparts.
