  • In this paper, we propose an image coding scheme which combines the Laplacian pyramid structure and a hierarchical finite state classified vector quantizer in the DCT domain, namely FSDCT-CTQ. First, an optimal bit allocation problem for fixed rates DCT-CVQ on the Laplacian pyramid structure is described. In an asymptotic case, with an optimal bit allocation, a coding gain over scalar quantization of each Laplacian plane is derived. Second, it is experimentallhy shown that the Laplacian pyramid structure provides a considerable codng gain in the sense of total MMSE (minimum mean squared error). Finally, we propose an FS-DCT-CVQ which exploits the hierarchicla correlation between the Laplacian planes. Simulation results on real images show that the proposed coding scheme can reconstruct an image with 30.33 dB at 0.192 bpp, 32.45 dB at 0.385 bpp, respectively.

  • The APC is a coding algorithm which has the middle property of both Wave Coding(ex ADPCM) and Vocoding(ex CELP) and can decode a proper quality of sound by using scalar quantizer instead of vector quantizer at computation a low calculation. So, the APC required for Voice Codec of INMARSAT-B could be successfully implemented by full duplex using TMS32OC30(DSP).

  • This paper studies mismatched scalar quantization of a generalized gamma source by a quantizer that is optimally (in the mean square error sense) designed for another generalized gamma source. Specifically, it considers variance-mismatched quantization which occurs when the variance of the source to be quantized differs from tat of the designed-for source. The main result is the two distortion formulas derived from Bennett's integral. The first formula is an approximation expression that uses the outermost threshold of an optimum scalar quantizer, and the second formula, in turn, uses an approximation formula for this outermost threshold. Numerical results are obtained for Laplacian sources, which are example of a generalized gamma source, and comparisons are made between actual mismatched distortions and the two formulas. These numerical results show that the two formulas become more accurate, as the number of quantization points gets larger and the ratio of the source variance to that of the designed-for source gets bigger. For example, the formulas are within 2~4% of the actual distortion for approximately 64 quantization points or more. In conclusion, the proposed approximation formulas are considered to have contribution as closed formulas and for their accuracy.

  • In this paper, we proposed a blind watermarking algerian to use characteristics of a scalar quantizer which is the recommended in the JPEG2000 and JPEG. The proposed algorithm shifts a quantization index according to the value of each watermark bit to prevent losing the watermark information during the compression by quantization. Therefore, the watermark is embedded during the process of quantization, not an additional process for watermarking, and is adaptively applied as a assigned quantizer according application areas. Before embedding process, a LFSR(Linear feedback shift register) rearranged the watermark for the security of the watermark itself and in the embedding process, a LFSR is used to hide the watermarking positions. Therefore the embedded watermark can he extracted by only the owner who knows the initial value of LFSR without the original image. The visual recognizable pattern such as a binary image was used as the watermark. The experimental results showed that the proposed algerian satisfies the robustness and imperceptibility corresponding to the major requirement of watermarking. The results showed the largest error rate to be $5.7\%$ for attack. The experimental result which compares the proposed algorithm with the Mohamed algorithm showed that the proposed algorithm was better than it, exactly $4\~5$ times for the attacks of JPEG and JPEG2000.

  • This paper proposes progressive image transmission(PIT) methods based on the wavelet packet transform, in which quantizers are optimized at each stage for the given bit rate. Scalar and vector quantizers are used and the performance of each quantizer is compared. After quantization, selected subbands are ordered by their priority for transmission. Subjective quality of the reconsetructed image is improved by human visual system (HVS) weighting.

  • Multiple Description Coding(MDC) is a technique used to obtain two or more (often correlated) descriptions of a source, which are transmitted over different channels to receiver. Two descriptions of the source support two levels of reconstruction quality. When all the descriptions are received and used in the reconstruction, the source should be reconstructed with acceptable quality. In this work, we consider Multiple Description Scalar Quantizer(MDSQ) to wavelet transform domain. Conventional MDSQ schemes in wavelet domain considered description with equal weights at each sub-bands after quantization. But each sub-bands is unequal contribution to whole image quality. Therefore, we experiment the multiple description with unequal weight in each sub-bands.

  • In this paper, a new DCT-VQ method is proposed which can solve the problems of VQ such as the degradation of edge and enormous calculations. VQ is carried in DCT domain but spatial domain in order to protect the degradation of edge. DCT makes high correlated image data decorrelated and the energy concentrated on a few coefficients. In DCT domain, the DC coefficient is quantized with 8 bits uniform scalar quantizer and the AC coefficients are divided to three regions and coded with vector qiantizer for considering edge components. For the decrease of the calculation and memory, the vectors for three region have small dimension of $1{\times}7$ and use the same codebook. Thus, the proposed method can fully express the edge components by considering AC coefficients in DCT domain and decrease the calculation and memory be reducing the dimension of vectors.

  • Recently, four speech coding techniques, namely, SBC-APCM(sub-band coding adaptive PCM), RPE-LPC(regualr pulse excitation linear predictive codec), MPE-LTP(multi-pulse excited long-term prediction) and CELP (code-excited linear prediction) are proposed for digital mobile radio applications. However, a performance comparison of these coders in the Rayleigh fading environment has not been made yet. In this paper, the performances of the four spech coders in the random bit error and burst error environment are investigated. For the channel coding of SBC-APCM, RPE-LPC and MPE-LTP, the sensitivity of output bit stream is measured and a bit selective forward error correction is provided acording to the measured bit sensitivity. And for an attempt to improve the performance of CELP, an optimum quantizer is applied for transmitting scalar quantities in CELP. However, an improvement over the conventional approach is found to be negligible. For the channel coding of CELP, Reed-Solomon code, Golay code, convolutional code of rate 1/2 shows the best performance. Finally, from the simulation results, it is concluded that CELP is the best candidate for digital mobile radio and is followed by MPE-LTP, SBC-APCM and RPE-LPC.

  • In this paper, an effective variable-block-based image compression technique using wavelet transform is proposed. Since the statistical property of each wavelet subband is different, we apply the adaptive quantization to each wavelet subband. In the proposed algorithm, each subband is divided into non-overlapping variable-sized blocks based on directional properties. In addition, we remove wavelet coefficients which are below a certain threshold value for coding efficiency. To compress the transformed data, the proposed algorithm quantizes the wavelet coefficients using scalar quantizer in LL subband and vector quantizers for other subbands to increase compression ratio. The proposed algorithm shows improvements in compression ratio as well as PSNR compared with the existing block-based compression algorithms. In addition, it does not cause any blocking artifacts in very low bit rates even though it is also a block-based method. The proposed algorithm also has advantage in computational complexity over the existing wavelet-based compression algorithms since it is a block-based algorithm.

  • Two-channel multiwavelet system is investigated for image compression application in this paper. Generally, multiwavelets are known for their superb capability of compressing non-stationary signals like voice. However, multivavelet system have a critical problem in processing and compressing image data due to mesh-grid visual artifacts. In our two-channel multiwavelet system we have investigated incorporation of pre and post filtering to the multiwavelet transform and compression system for alleviating those ingerent visual artifacts due to multiwavelet effect. In addition, to quantify the image data compression performance of proposed multiwavelet system, computer simulations have been performed using various image data. For bit allocation and quantization, the Lagrange multiplier technique considering data rate vs. distortion rate along with a nonlinear companding method are applied equallly to all systems considered, here. The simulation results have yielded 1 ~ 2 dB compression enhancement over the scalar savelet systems. If the more advanced compression methods like SPIHT and run-length channel coding were adopted for the proposed multiwavelet system, a much higher compression gain could be obtained.
