Korean medicated diet (KMD) is not a simple combination of food and Chinese drugs, but a special carefully constructed diet made from Sasang constitutional medicines, food and condiments under the theoretical guidance of diet preparation based on differentiation of symptoms and signs of traditional Sasang medicine (TSM). It combines the functional efficacy of medicine with the delicacy of food, and can be used to prevent and cure diseases, build up one's health and prolong one's life. Korean traditional medicated diet has a long history of development. Although influenced by Chinese medicine, Korean traditional medicine has been developed into a unique system of traditional medicine that has surpassed the continental medical practice, sublimating itself into a native medical practice suitable to Korean lifestyles and physical constitutions. In the 19th century, Lee Jema's Sasang medicine (medicine of four types of energy determining the physical constitution) was introduced. It is an integration of mind and body according to the individual's physical constitution that is categorized allowing a customized method of treatment ideal for each category-making the content of Korean traditional medicated diet even richer. The characteristics of Korean medicated diet are as follows: (1) Laying stress on the wole, selecting medicated diet on the basis of differential diagnosis. (2) Suitable for prevention and treatment, outstanding in effect. (3) Good in taste, convenient for taking. KMD refers to drink and food according to certain prescriptions, by processing and cooking that can be used either for prevention and cure of diseases, or for health care and recovery. The purpose of this review is to introduce TSM and KMD based on Sasang constitutional medicines.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to find out the health condition and the etiology in oriental medicine of the high school girls menstrual disorders by Sasang constitution. Methods: The data from the 795 participants were collected using a structured menstrual history questionnaire. Based on the survey responses, we had 97 adolescents with menstrual disorder as the test group and 97 adolescents without menstrual disorder as the control group. The clinical trials subjects were asked to respond to another questionnaire for identifying their constitutional types and respond to the DSOM and undergo Inbody. We identified significant variables for dysmenorrhea from comparison between the test and control group. Results: The DSOM test showed that the scores of qi stagnation, static blood, cold, dampness, phlegm, heart, kidney were significantly higher in dysmenorrhea, scant menstruation, menstruation at irregular intervals. For the Sasang constitution, there is a difference on the cause of the outbreak. Soyangin from yin deficiency, dryness and blood deficiency is associated with menstrual disorders. Taeumin from cold, dampness and qi deficiency is associated with menstrual disorders. Soeumin from heart, qi stagnation, static blood and spleen is associated with menstrual disorders. Conclusions: For the Sasang constitution, there is a difference on the cause of the outbreak. The result of a comparison of the test and control groups showed that there's no relevance to the body fat mass and body fat percentage with menstrual irregularities.
1. Objective : The purpose of this study is to understand the origin, changes and composition of Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang. 2. Methods : 1) Analyzed the context of the progressive transformation of soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang in related passages from "Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑)", "Donguisusebowon Chobongwon (東醫壽世保元 草本卷)", "Donguisusebowon Gabobon (東醫壽世保元 甲午 本)", "Donguisusebowon Sinchukbon (東醫壽世保元 辛丑本)", "Dongmuyugo (東武遺稿)" 2) Examined the differences between the utilization of Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang in pre-existing manuscripts according to pathological pattern and more specifically at a pathological stage. 3) Analyzed the total primary effect of the herbs as a prescriptive category, as well as the herbal properties of each component. 3. Results and Conclusions : 1) Originally Dongwon's Bojungikgi-tang was prescribed as a stomach & spleen organ tonifying medicine so it was easily applied and established as a prescription appropriate for Soeumin constitutional types with a weaker spleen organ. 2) From Gabobon(甲午本), Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang was modified, excluding Bupleurum falcatum(柴胡), Cimicifuga heracleifolia (升麻) and substituting Teucrium chamaedrys(藿香), Ophiopogon japonicus(蘇葉) which are herbs appropriate for the Soeumin constitutional type. 3) In the Gabobon(甲午本), the Gegi-tang which has yang raising properties is included in the Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang. In Sinchukbon(辛丑本), the Gegi-tang of the Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang in the Gabobon was excluded and the Gegi-tang mutated into Hwangigyeji-tang. 4) In the Gabobon(甲午本), as the Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang was prescribed for Soeumin disease regardless of favorable-unfavorable patterns and mild-severe patterns, the stage of the disease when to prescribe Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang was not clarified. 5) As of the Sinchukbon(辛丑本) edition, as Soeumin's prescriptions have been obvious, the soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang was applied to Mang-yang disease with Hwangigyeji-tang and Seungyangikki-tang 6) As of the Sinchukbon(辛丑本) edition, the Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang has been applied to parients having both exterior-heat Mang-yang disease and Greater-yin disease, at the same time. 7) As of the Sinchukbon(辛丑本) edition, finally, the Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang formula has been established as gathering Qi and middle tonification with Panax ginseng(人蔘), Astragalus membranaceus(黃芪), keeping the spleen healthy with Artractylodes japonica(白朮), keeping the spleen strong with Angelica acutiloba(當歸), rooting the spleen with Citrus reticulata(陳皮), raising Yang and middle jiao with Teucrium chamaedrys(藿香), Ophiopogon japonicus(蘇葉), middle tonification with Glycyrrhiza glabra(甘草灸), Zingiber officinale(生薑), Zizyphus jujuba(大棗).
Objectives Recently, Sasang Constitutional Analysis Tool (SCAT) was developed using face, body shape, questionnaire, and voice information. The purpose of this paper is to analysis the characteristics of SCAT in detail for the subjects whose Sasang Constitutional (SC) type was confirmed clearly. Methods 1) The SC types of 108 patients were diagnosed by an expert of Sasang constitutional medicine through the observation of improvements after taking more than 20 packs of herbal medicine prescribed 2) The diagnostic results of SCAT were acquired for the patients. 3) Comparison between diagnostic results of the SCAT and expert was performed according to SC probability difference, the number of packs of herbal medicine prescribed, the number of hospital visits, and age. Results 1) The concordance rate was 65.9% and 59.4% in the male and female groups, respectively. 2) Overall, the concordance rate increased as the SC probability difference increased. In case of more than 5% SC probability difference, it increased up to 71.0% and 66.7% in the male and female groups, respectively. 3) The concordance rate did not show any trend as the number of packs of herbal medicine prescribed and the number of hospital visits increased. 4) The higher concordance rate was observed in Taeeumin, Soyangin, and 20s ~ 40s groups of male patients, and in Soyangin, 20s, and 40s groups of female patients. Conclusions The strong and weak points of SCAT were observed and they will contribute to the improvement of SCAT performance.

Objectives: To examine the medical effectiveness of meditation programs ($\alpha$ version) by psychological types. Methods: MBTI, which was created by Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers, was used as the Psychological Type test and to investigate psychological temperament and functions and psychological preferences. Heart rate variability was used to test the effectiveness of meditation by investigating time domains (mean HR, SDNN, PSI) and frequence domain parameters (TP, LF, HF, LF or HF norm, Ln (TP or VLF or LF or HF). Results: 1. The autonomic nervous system became active, and both time domains and frequency domains showed positive responses to meditation in heart rate variability tests, without distinction of Psychological Types. 2. In Psychological Types using sensing over intuition for perception, there were positive responses as well as an increase of the parasympathetic nervous system's activeness to meditation for heart rate variability tests, depending on psychological temperaments and psychological functions. 3. In heart rate variability tests by preferences, there was no difference. Extroversion and Introversion types, Sensing over Intuition Types, Thinking over Feeling Types, Judging over Perception Types had an increase of activeness of the parasympathetic nervous system. Therefore, meditation has a positive physical and psychological relaxing effect. Conclusions: A complex meditation program has a positive effect on overall meditation. Especially in the MBTI test, sensing was superior to intuition when people recognized objects. The Sensing, Thinking and Judging type was more advantageous than Intuition, Feeling and Perception, respectively. In the future, a well-designed control study is needed, to develop a suitable meditation for each personality type.
Objective : This study investigated the relationship between diet and lifestyle and Sasang constitution (SC) in acute stroke patients. Methods : From October 2005 to March 2007, 379 acute stroke patients were included. Patients were hospitalized within 14 days after the onset of stroke at DongGuk University International Hospital, Kyungwon University In-cheon Oriental Medical Hospital or Department Cardiovascular and Neurologic Diseases (stroke center), Kyung Hee University Oriental hospital. We assessed the type of SC of acute stroke patients by Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification II (QSCC II). We investigated general characteristics, stroke types, dietary preferences (meat, sea food, fast food, alcohol drinking, coffee and green tea drinking) and lifestyle (smoking, exercise) according to SC. Results : This study showed that out of the total patients, the proportion of So-yang to Tae-eum to So-eumwas equal to 2.6 to 2 to 1. Of note, this study showed a higher proportion in age of So-eum & weight of Tae-eum. The ratio of cerebral hemorrhage to cerebral infarction was 1 to 9. SVO, LAA, SUE are the 3 types of cerebral infarction classified by TOAST; SVO ranked the highest while SUE ranked the lowest in all constitutions. There were no significant differences between So-yang and Tae-eum in the aspect of the preference for meat, but the majority of So-eum displayed high preferences for seafood. In the aspect of alcohol drinking and smoking history, So-yang recorded significantly bigger proportion while So-eum & Tae-eum patients represented a bigger proportion than So-yangin the aspect of no exercise habits. Conclusion : According to the result above, we could observe the general disposition of various characteristic distributions according to SC of acute stroke patients. Also, we could observe a relationship between diet and lifestyle and Sasang constitution (SC) in acute stroke patients. Further studies will be needed to better understand the relationship between diet and lifestyle and Sasang constitution (SC) in acute stroke patients.
Objectives This study was aimed to reveal the characteristics of the body shape, face, voice and temperament in Taeyangin. Methods The subjects were recruited from November 2005 to August 2012. Sasang constitutional specialist in each clinics confirmed the Sasang Constitution. Taeyangin (TY) became a standard guidance to be compared with each other Sasang type. Anova test was used in analyzing continuous variables and factor analysis was conducted in temperament questionnaire in advance. Generalized propensity score with age and body mass index (BMI) was used in adjusted model. Significant level was .05 Results 1. The TY body shape were generally smaller than Taeeumin (TE) (p<0.001) and Soyangin (SY) (p<0.05) in crude. The TY body shape were still smaller than TE (p<0.05) and there was no significant difference between TY and SY except rib circumference in males and forehead circumference (p<0.05) in females in adjusted model. 2. The size of face and nose in TY was smaller than in TE and there was different between males and females' TY and others in the characteristics of eye, nose and forehead variables in crude (p<0.05). Most of differences between TY and TE were disappeared in adjusted model. 3. The vocal height and speed of TY was different other types and there was different between males and females' TY in some of frequency change rate in crude (p<0.05). Most of differences between TY and other types were similar before and after adjusted model. 4. The temperament of TY was different with SE before and after adjusted mode 1 (p<0.05). TY males showed difference in expression factor and TY females showed difference in behavior factor compared with TE respectively (p<0.05). Conclusions This study reveals characteristics of body shape, face, voice and character in the TY males females compared with each other type respectively.
1. Objectives: In order to classify an individual into four constitution type, an oriental medical doctor utilizes various information such as face, pulse, voice, and questionnaire. When only one type of information is used, one's constitution may not be decided correctly. 2. Methods: In this paper, we propose a novel four constitution types classifier using facial images which classifies subjects into indecision group as well as Taeumin, Soeumin, and Soyangin. 3. Results: Experimental results show that it increases the classification rate though the decision rate is rather decreased, which is more effective and reliable than conventional classifiers without indecision. 4. Conclusion: For the effective classification, we have found that it is more useful to add an indecision group which requires more information to be properly classified into one constitution type.
Sasang Constitutional Medicine focuses on the different constitutional manifestations of the individual's nature and emotions. The nature and emotions drive the ascending and descending of Qi in the body. And this dynamics of the Qi's ascent and descent shapes the different types of structures, functions and temperaments. Although Sasang Constitutional Medicine has many advantages, its diagnosis of the constitution still depends on the doctors' own idea and has no objective identification. So many doctors in Korea have been trying to solve this problem. Recently, there are several efforts to find out the relationship between genetic information and constitution. By the way, May, 1998 there is a astonishing report about the gene which determines the human performance, that is ACE(angiotensin converting enzyme). And it suggests that the I allele was associated with improved endurance performance. ACE has three genotype including II, ID and DD. "I" means insertion and "D" means deletion. We determined the type of the Sasang constitution with QSCCII questionaire and the one's ACE genotype with PCR of the 127 people and we discovered the relationship between the constitution and the ACE genotype. The result is as follow. Among 39 people who have the II genotype, 7(18%) belong to Taeum(Taiyin), 9(23.1%) belong to Soyang(Shaoyang) and 23(59%) belong to Soeum(Shaoyin). Among 62 people who have the ID genotype, 18(29%) belong to Taeum(Taiyin), 21(33.9%) belong to Soyang(Shaoyang) and 23(37.1%) belong to Soeum(Shaoyin). Among 26 people who have DD genotype, 11(42.3%) belong to Taeum(Taiyin), 4(15.4%) belong to Soyang(Shaoyang) and 11(42.3%) belong to Soeum(Shaoyin). This data indicates that there are implicable relationship between the Sasang constitution and ACE genotype. Especially people who have II genotype have much possibility to be a Soeum(Shaoyin) person (59%) and Soyang(Shaoyang) person have less possibility to have DD genotype (15.4%). With this conclusion, we suggest further study of relationship between the Sasang constitution and ACE genotype and we think that other polymorphism can be a candidate of the partner of Sasang constitution.

The purposes of this study were to investigate eating attitudes and food Preferences among female college students by their body constitution types, such as Tae-yang, Tae-eum, So-yang, and So-eum by using the more accurate and objective classification method of the Sasang Constitutional Medicine. People with Tae-eum (51.6%)body constitution type showed the highest percentage level, followed by So-yang (33.0%) and So-eum (15.4%)body constitution types. In respect to the taste preference, people with Tae-eum and So-yang body constitution types tended to preferred spicy taste and So-eum body constitution type preferred sweet taste. In the satisfaction and interests toward the body shape, people with Tae-eum body constitution types showed the lowest satisfaction levels for their body shapes and showed the highest interests levels for their body shapes. In regard to eating attitudes, So-eum body constitution type state that they eat food relatively slowly. Tae-eum and So-yang body constitution type state that they eat food until they feel full. Tae-eum body constitution type state they normally overeat when they got stressed. The food preferences for the food group, there is no significant difference body constitution types with regard to food preferences.
