Objectives The goal of the present study was to elucidate the characteristics of behavior problems in Sasang typology with child patients. Methods Subjects consisted of 176 (95 boys, 81 girls) children from 36 months to 83 months were diagnosed by two clinical experts in pediatrics and Sasang medicine. There were 22 So-Yang types, 141 Tae-Eum types, and 13 So-Eum types. The behavior problems were measured with Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and ANOVA (analysis of variance) was used for the analysis. Results There were no significant differences between Sasang types among subject's age (F(2, 173)=.190, p=.827) and sex (${\chi}^2$(2, N=176)=1.639, p=.441) as well as their mother's age (F(2, 169)=.060, p=.942) and education level (${\chi}^2$(4, N=172)=.394, p=.983) and their father's age (F(2, 168)=1.184, p=.309) and education level (${\chi}^2$(4, N=172)=5.664, p=.226). So-Yang types ($50.14{\pm}22.35$; $17.27{\pm}8.60$) had higher scores than Tae-Eum types ($38.74{\pm}21.32$; $12.62{\pm}7.98$) in total problems and internalizing problems score of the CBCL, respectively. More specifically, So-Yang types ($5.90{\pm}2.81$; $3.77{\pm}1.90$) had significantly higher depression/anxiety and somatization subscale score than Tae-Eum types ($4.04{\pm}2.73$; $2.30{\pm}2.12$). Scores of So-Yang types were significantly higher than those of CBCL clinical group in depression/anxiety and somatization subscales. Conclusions There were significant differences between child outpatients with different Sasang types, which would be taken into consideration concerning development of Sasang type diagnosis in addition to parenting, treatment, and prevention for children.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to address differences between mental health according to sasang constitution and ego state among college students. Methods: Data for this cross-sectional study were collected by administration of questionnaires eliciting Woo's ego state scale, QSCC II for the sasang constitution classification, and SCL-90-R for mental health to 393 college students. Analysis was performed using IBM SPSS (version 19.0). Results: The Free Child ego and Adapted Child ego differed significantly among sasang types. The ego-gram pattern of So-eum type exhibited the N pattern (Nurturing Parent (NP)>Adapted Child (AC)>Adult (A)>Free Child (FC)>Critical Parent (CP), AC-high type), however, the ego-gram pattern of other constitution types showed the M pattern (NP>FC>A>AC>CP). No statistically significant differences in mental health were observed among sasang types, however, among ego states, AC and CP showed negative correlation with mental health status. Between So-eum type and So-yang type, AC was the factor predicting mental health. Between Tae-eum type and undefined type, AC and CP were factors predicting mental health. Conclusion: These findings suggest that sasang constitution could be an important factor in understanding the ego state and mental health status. We conclude that sasang constitution should be considered in interpretation of mental health status presentation in clients.
Objectives This study aimed to analyze the influence of various sleep-related factors that affect sleep quality by each Sasang type. Methods A total of 400 subjects were included for this study, 108 males and 292 females. Sasang type was diagnosed using the SCAT. Then, the characteristics of each Sasang type were analyzed using HRV, DITI, and PSQI, PSS, and SDFI questionnaires. Logistic regression analysis was used to predict sleep-related factors that affect sleep disorders by Sasang types. Results This study shows that the pathophysiological characteristics for stress and digestive function of each Sasang type can differentiate sleep management through a logistic regression model including subscales of PSS and SDFI. Stress had no effect on the occurrence of sleep disturbance within only So-Eum, since the stress level is originally high in the So-Eum regardless of sleep quality. Rather, decreased appetite and poor eating habits had a significant impact on the decline in sleep quality. In addition, poor digestion and eating habits in So-Yang had a greater impact and poor digestion in Tae-Eum had a greater impact on the decline in sleep quality. Conclusion The stress and subscales of digestive function provide differentiated sleep management in So-Yang, Tae-Eum, and So-Eum types. The individualized sleep management for each Sasang type with statistically validated PSS and SDFI would be useful for sleep-related experts planning safe and effective person-centered health care as well as for Western clinicians who want to incorporate Sasang typology into their treatments as integrative medical technique in the future.
1. Objective This research looks into the facial characteristics of Sasang constitution. 2. Methods It assigns and measures the length of nine areas of the face using a picture, and calculates the proportions and gives statistical data of these items. It also references the proportion of the items using the contents of "Sanghakjinjeon" ("相學眞傳") Ten face-types as a basis, divides the face into seven types, looks into the similarities between constitutions, and also compares it to clinically and frequently used constitutional facial characteristics. 3. Results and Conclusion After comparing the analytical items between Taeumins, Soyangins, and Soeumins, Soeumins had an oval face due to the fact that the length and width that their lower faces took up was small compared to the entire face. After dividing the facial characteristics of the test subjects using 十字相, there were significantly more Taeumins in Dong(同)_face-type, and Soeumins in Won(圓)_face-type. There weren't any significant group that Soyangins showed up in. After comparing these facial characteristics with that of previous facial characteristics found in books and used clinically, we were able to find corresponding items.
Objectives . The types of Sasang constitutional medicine (SCM) have definite effect on response to herbal drugs. The majority of human P45O dependent xenobiotic metabolism is carried out by polymorphic enzymes which can cause abolished, altered or enhanced metabolism. Therefore, we evaluated the relation of major CYP2C19, 2D6 polymorphism with Sasang types. Methods : 214 healthy subjects were recruited with informed consent; 172 among them had Sasang diagnosis by QSCC2. CYP2D6, 2C19 polymorphism were determined by PCR-RFLP method. Results : None of the Sasang types showed significant difference in CYP2D6, 2C19 polymorphism. However, the Tae-um type showed relatively low frequency of CYP2D6 $^{*}$10/$^{*}$10 polymorphisms with low activity (p=0.110). In the So-yang type, specific $^{*}$3/$^{*}$3 genotype which is a poor metabolizer of CYP2C19$^{*}$3 was detected (p=0.078).Conclusion . These results suggest that the Tae-um type which is said to have high liver function in SCM has the tendency of high drug-metabolizing enzyme activity. With further study, the CYP polymorphism could serve as a scientific tool for SCM diagnosis.
This study was to examine the positive and negative affect related to psychological characteristics of each Sasang types using Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) with 78 students from School of Korean Medicine, Pusan National University. After determining the Sasang types by QSCC II, the psychological characteristics of each Sasang types were analysed by PANAS. We did ANOVA analysis with eight related scales and found significant differences between the Tae-Eum type ($18.71{\pm}8.75$, $6.47{\pm}3.36$, $6.31{\pm}2.47$, $3.18{\pm}2.77$, $10.94{\pm}10.08$) and the So-Eum type ($13.38{\pm}6.03$, $4.55{\pm}2.23$, $4.19{\pm}2.16$, $5.81{\pm}4.20$, $1.83{\pm}9.17$, respectively) in Positive Affect (PA) (F=3.931, p=0.024), PA-Joy (F=3.991, p=0.023), PA-Interest (F=5.025, p=0.009), NA-Afraid (F=3.118, p=0.050), and Difference between Positive and Negative Affect (DPN) (F=6.355, p=0.003) scores. The post-hoc analysis showed that the Tae-Eum type ($18.71{\pm}8.75$, $6.47{\pm}3.36$, $6.31{\pm}2.47$, $10.94{\pm}10.08$) has significantly higher score than So-Eum type ($13.38{\pm}6.03$, $4.55{\pm}2.23$, $4.19{\pm}2.16$, $1.83{\pm}9.17$, respectively) in PA (p=0.018), PA-Joy (p=0.021), PA-Interest (p=0.017), and DPN (p=0.002) scores. The So-Eum type ($5.81{\pm}4.20$) showed significantly (p=0.047) higher score than the Tae-Eum type ($3.18{\pm}2.77$) in NA-Afraid. Results demonstrated distinct affect profile differences between Tae-Eum and So-Eum Sasang types using PANAS. This study may serve as the foundation in identifying psychological traits of Sasang types, especially regarding the aspect of affect.
This research was carried out to examine the correlation between the patients of functional dyspepsia and four constitution (Sasang Constitution). This research examined the correlation of functional dyspepsia versus Sasang Constitution, chronic fatigue, and mental stress in 100 cases of functional dyspepsia. No significant correlation was witnessed between average duration of dyspepsia and gender, and smorking. There was tendency of increased duration of indigestion in relation with length of chronic fatigue and the degree of mental stress. Significant difference was found between the patients with indigestion and Sasang Constitution types. Soeumin among the patients with indigestion were numerous and it was significantly different with normal people. Significant correlation was found between the period of indigestion and chronic fatigue and the degree of mental stress. Significant difference was found between the patients with indigestion and Sasang Constitution types.
The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between general health condition and biopsychological traits of Sasang typology which determines the disease susceptibility and treatment responses. We had Korean Constitutional Multicenter Bank (KCMB) listed 1156 participants for measuring Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) and Body Mass Index (BMI) for biopsychological traits of each Sasang types as well as Short Form 12 (SF12) for general health status. All the analysis was performed with consideration of gender and age. We analyzed the differences in general health status between Sasang types and the correlation between general health status and biopsychological traits of Sasang typology. We also analyzed how much the selected SF12 subscales can be explained with biopsychosocial characteristics. There were no generaliszable differences among Sasang type groups in SF12, no significant correlation between biopsychological traits and SF12 Physical and Mental Component Summary. We found that there were significant correlations between SPQ-Behavior subscale and SF12 Vitality, and the regression model with SPQ-Behavior, SPQ-Emotionality, age and sex can predict 15.4% of the total variances in SF12 Vitality. We discussed the possibility that the Sasang typology is not a determinant of general health status but a moderator for the susceptibility and response. This study would contribute to the development of Sasang type-specific life nurturing program focusing on the psychological perspectives.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of Sasang constitutional types in the university students. Methods : One hundred fifty students of Woosuk University participated in this study and their majors were Korean medicine, nursing science and pharmacy. The Sasang constitutional types were determined by the results of Two Step Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Diagnosis (TS-QSCD). The subjects were also tested by Academic Motivation Tests (AMT), Multi-dimensional Learning Strategy Tests (MLST) and Learning Style Questionnaire of Sasang Constitution (LSQ-SC). The subscale scores of AMT, MSLT and each questions of AMT, MLST, LSQ-SC were compared among the different Sasang constitutions using analysis of variances (ANOVA). Results : There were no significant differences in AMT results between Sasang constitutions. In subscales of AMT, Feeling scales (FTF) scores of Soyangin was significantly higher than Taeeumin. Other subscales of AMT were not different between Sasang constitutions. There were no significant differences in MLST results between Sasang constitutions. Subscales of MLST were not different between Sasang constitutions. There were many questions between Soyangin and other constitutions in the analysis of questions of AMT, MLST, and LSQ-SC, and less between Taeeumin and Soeumin. Conclusions : These results suggest that the characteristics of Soyangin is more prominent compared with other constitutions in the learning style, and there were a little differences between Soeumin and Taeeumin.
Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the change in Sasang constitution prediction value in 2 years and find the factors associated with it. Methods Cohort data from Korean medicine data center was used. Using Korean Sasang Constitutional Diagnostic Questionnaire (KS-15) which consist of questions related to body shape, temperament, and symptoms, participants were categorized into Tae-Yang (TY), Tae-Eum (TE), So-Yang (SY), and So-Eum (SE). Sasang constitution was assessed on the baseline and after two years. Result Total 5,784 participants were analyzed. (TE 3, 341; SE 911; SY 1,532). Among them, 1,402 participants (24.2%) showed different prediction value in KS-15 after two years. The proportion of participants showing different prediction value in two years was the highest in SY, and the lowest in TE group. The factors associated with the change in Sasang constitution prediction value were different by constitution type. The change in feeling after sweating was significantly associated with the change in prediction value in TE and SY groups, not in SE group. Although temperament was not significantly associated with the change in prediction value from TE to SE, it was significantly associated with that in the change from TE to SY. The change in BMI and appetite were associated with the change in constitution prediction value in all three constitution types. Conclusion Although the factors associated with the change in prediction value of Sasang constitution were different by each constitution type, BMI and appetite were significant in all three types. These factors could be useful for developing Sasang constitution questionnaire and deciding re-prediction needs of Sasang constitution. Further research about the factors related to Sasang constitution diagnosis need to be conducted.
