  • The biosorption of Pb and Cr by Sargassum thunbergii was investigated in a batch conditions. The Pb and Cr uptake capacity of Sargassum thunbergii was 232.5 mg Pb/g biomass and 91.6 mg Cr/g biomass, respectively. An adsorption equilibria was reached within about 0.5 hr for both the Pb and the Cr. The adsorption parameters for both the Pb and the Cr were determined according to the Langmuir and Freundlich model. With increasing pH values, more negative sites are becoming available for the adsorption of Pb and Cr. The selectivity of mixture solution showed an uptake order of Pb>Cu>Cr>Cd. Pb and Cr adsorbed by S. thunbergii could be recovered ken 0.1 M HCl, 0.1 M $HNO_3$ and 0.1M EDTA by a desorption process, and the efficiency of Pb desorption was above $95.8\%$, whereas the efficiency of the Cr desorption was below $50.7\%$.

  • The number and abundance of epiphytic algae growing on Sargassum thunbergii and their functional forms were examined. Thalli of S. thunbenii were collected on the nine islands of southern coast and at Gyeokpo on the western coast of Korea in summer 2001. A total of 25 species, 6 green (24%), 2 brown (8%), 17 red algae (68%) were identified in the present study. Caulacanthus okamurae, Ulva pertusa, Sphacelaria furcigera were found on the thalli of S. thunbegii that collected at the all regions. Caulacanthus okamurae, Champia bifida and Laurencia venusta grew on the lower parts of S. thunbergii thalli whereas, Polysiphonia spp. attached to the apical parts of the plants. Four functional forms, such as sheet-form (8%), filamentous-form (52%), coarsely branched-form (32%) and articulated-calcareous algal form (8%) were distinguished. The epiphytic algae on the thalli of S. thunbergii are mainly annual opportunistic algae, filamentous-form algae and smaller red algae. Also, most epiphytic seaweeds of S. thunbergii produce and release spores before pseudoperennial host plants are necrotic in late autumn.

  • Peroxynitrite formation in vivo is implicated in numerous human diseases and there is considerable interest in the use of antioxidants and natural products for their treatment. The three components (1-3) isolated from Sargassum thunbergii as well as the organic solvent-soluble fractions and the aqueous layer of S. thunbergii were evaluated for their potential to scavenge authentic ONOO$\^$-/ and ONOO$\^$-/ derived from 3-morpholinosydnonimine (SIN-1). The antioxidant activity of the individual fractions was in the order of 85% aqueous (aq.) MeOH>n$\^$-/ BuOH>n-hexane>H$_2$O. The three known compounds, sargahydroquinoic acid (1), sargaquinoic acid (2) and sargachromenol (3) showed peroxynitrite-scavenging activities comparable to those of L-ascorbic acid and penicillamine. These results showed a possible antioxidant activity in major constituents of S. thunbergii.

  • Biosorptions of Cr and Pb were evaluated for 23 species of marine algae collected from a Korean coast. Among a variety of species for biosorbent potential, Sargassum species showed higher uptake capacity for Cr and Pb. An adsorption equilibrium was reached in about 1 hr for Cr and 30 min for Pb. The maximum uptake capacity was136.0 mg Cr/g biomass and 232.5 mg Pb/g biomass, respectively. In Pb biosorption in the column packed with Sargassum tbunbertii, 300 and 200 bed Tolumes at the concentration of 50 mg/L in feed solution were processed at the column residence time of 5 and 10 min before the column breakthrough point occurred. The elutions with 0.1 M HCl solution were more than $95{\%}$. The high efficiency of continous biesorntion and elution (3 cycles) indicated that Sargassum thunbergii was an effective biosorbent for Pb recovery.

  • In this study, the characteristics of lead removal by PVA and alginate bead which used widely as immobilizing agents were investigated, and the difference of removal amounts between pure PVA/alginate bead and Sargassum thunbergii immobilized bead was studied. All PVA beads, pure and S. thunbergii immobilized, reached an equilibrium state in about 1 hour, and S. thunbergii immobilized bead adsorbed more lead than pure one. But in the case of alginate beads, they needed much time, about 5 hours, to reach an equilibrium state, and adsorbed lead four times higher than PVA beads. Therefore, it was considered that alginate beads had more mass transfer resistance and function groups which adsorb lead such as hydroxyl, carboxyl and etc. than PVA bead. To examine the continuous usage of alginate beads, the process of adsorption/desorption of lead was conducted repeatedly. As the process proceeded, the amounts of lead adsorption decrease, so it was indicated that the non-desorbed lead from alginate bead at first adsorption/desorption process remained constantly.
