  • Fishes in genus Sardinella are small pelagic species, which plays an important role in marine ecosystem as the first consumer. Those species are also commercially important, whose total catch reaches 278,600 tons in 2011 in Indonesia, but their identification has been difficult for their morphological similarity. In this study, we reported Sardinella jussieu for the first time in Indonesian coastal area (Banten Bay, Indonesia, $6^{\circ}\;0^{\prime}\;50.00^{{\prime}{\prime}}\;S-106^{\circ}\;10^{\prime}\;21.00^{{\prime}{\prime}}\;E$). We were able to confirm the species by both its morphological characteristics including the black spot at dorsal fin origin, the dusky pigmentation at caudal fin, 31 total scute numbers, and DNA sequence identity in the GenBank database by the molecular analysis. Its total mitochondrial genome was determined by the combination of next-generation sequencing and typical PCR strategy. The total mitochondrial genome of Sardinella jussieu (16,695 bp) encoded 13 proteins, 2 ribosomal RNAs, 22 transfer RNAs, and the putative control region. All protein-coding genes started with ATG and typical stop codon and ended with TAA or TAG except for ND4 in which AGA is used. Phylogenetic analyses of both COI region and full mitochondrial genome showed that S. jussieu is most closely related to Sardinella albella and Sardinella gibbosa

  • Two specimens of Sardinella lemuru Bleeker, 1853 were collected for the first time from the adjacent waters of Cheju Island, Korea, in March 1997. S. lemuru is very similar to S. zunasi (Bleeker, 1854) in external features but differs in the number of anal fin rays. While S. lemuru is difficult to differentiate by color from Clupea pallasii valenciennes, 1847 the two are easily differentiated by their gill raker counts. We propose "Bali-paen-dang-i" as a new Korean name for S. lemuru.

  • The taxonomic revision of the family Clupeidae was conducted based on the specimens collected from the coasts of Korean Peninsula from 1990 to 1995. Eleven species belonging to ten genera are reviewed and provisional keys to species and genera are provided with synonyms and their distributions. Ilisha elongata (Bennett, 1830) is proposed as a replacement name for Pristigaster chinensis, Etrumeus teres (De Kay, 1842) for E. micropus, Spratelloides gracilis (Temminck et Schlegel, 1846) for S. japonicus, Sardinella jussieu (Valenciennes, 1847) for S. immaculata, Sardinella zunasi (Bleeker, 1854) for Harengula zunasi, and Tenualosa reeuesii (Richardson, 1846) for Macrura reeuesii respectively. Most species of the family Clupeidae in Korea are shared with Chinese and Japanese faunas including tropical and temperature species without endemics.

  • To study the spatio-temperal distribution of the ichhyoplankton in the estuarine ecosystem, Ichthyoplankton were sampled with associated data on water temperature and salinity in Mankyong-Dongjin Estuary on October, 1989, and March, May and July, 1990. Water temperature varied seasonally, showing homogeneous spatial pattern. The spatial difference in splinty was determined by the amount of river runoff. Few Ichthyoplankton occurred in October and March. In May, Konosirus punctatus occupied most of the ichthyoplankton. In July, Sardinella zunasi, Engraulis japonica, Gobiidae, and Thrissa sp. were the dominant species. The eggs and larvae of Engraulis japonica were collected from the outer bay, while those of Konosirus punctatus predominated in the less saline inner bay. Konosirus punctatus. Sardinella zunasi, Gobiidae, and Thrissa sp. were the characteristic species of this estuary. They were considered to be spawned and grown during their early life stage in the less saline water.

  • To investigate the impingement of fishes on the traveling intake water screens, fishes were collected from the traveling screens at Kori Nuclear Power Plant between April 1987 and March 1989. A total of 102 species was collected during the study period. Gasterosteus aculeatus aculeatus, Engraulis japonicus, Sardinella zunasi, and Trichiurus lepturus were the four most abundant species, and accounted for 97.4% of the total number and 92.2% of the total biomass of fishes collected. Impingement was very high in Febuary and March, but it was low during the rest of the year. There was an inverse relationship between intake water temperature and fish catch.

  • The species composition and seasonal variation in abundance of fishes in the Nakdong River estuary were investigated monthly from February 1987 to January 1988. During the study period, 23,008 specimens belonging to 100 species were collected. The most abundant fish species were Repomucenus valenciennei, Pholis fangi, Leiognathus nuchalis, Trachurus japonicus, and Sardinella zunasi. These five species comprised 63.0% of total fishes and 47.8% of total biomass collected. The seasonal dominant fish species were P. fangi and R. valenciennei in spring, R. valenciennei and Cynoglossus joyneri in summer, Thryssa kammalensis and Apogon lineatus in fall, and R. valenciennei, L. nuchalis and S. zunasi in winter. The number of fish species, number of individuals collected, and species diversity indices fluctuated with the seasons. The number of species and number of individuals decreased significantly in the upper estuary. While temperature was an important factor which influenced on seasonal fluctuation of the fish community, salinity determined the spatial distribution of fishes.

  • The catch composition of commercially important species of the stationary lift net at Barangay Gines, Miagao, Iloilo, the Philippines was investigated from December 2013 to May 2014 during the different phases of the moon. A total of 486 kg of fish coming from 12 different genera, including mollusk and crustaceans, was caught and identified from the catch of the stationary lift net. Among the 12 genera identified from the catch of stationary lift net, anchovy (Stolephorus), sardines (Sardinella), squid (Loligo) and mysid shrimp (Acetes) were considered to be commercially important due to their value. Acetes catch was highest during the new moon in the month of January. Loligo catch was also high during the new moon except in the month of May. Stolephorus catch was also highest during the new moon except in the month of January. Sardinella catch was highest during the first quarter in the month of February. Full moon had the lowest catch all throughout the duration of the study while new moon had the highest catch during December 2013 to March 2014 and first quarter was the highest in the months of April and May.

  • Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance of pelagic fish in Chonsu Bay were determined by analyzing monthly samples collected using a set net from March, 1992 to January, 1993. The data in this study were compared with those of 1981$\~$82. Of 63 species identified, Engraulis japonicus, Ammodytes penonatus, Enedrias fangi and Sardinella zunasi predominated in abundance. Especially E.japonicus occupied $87\%$ of total number of individuals. In spling, fish abundance increased by recruitment of lariat E. fanti as well as adults of E. japonicus, A. personatus and S. zunasi. These adults moved towards the open sea after spawning in early summer. A large number of juveniles was then collected from August until December. The seasonal change in species composition from the present study showed a similar trend to that occurred in 1981$\~$82. However, larger number of pelagic fish was caught in 1992$\~$93 than in 1981$\~$82. This result seems to be related to the higher water temperature (>$2^{\circ}C$) than the average mean temperature in spring and autumn, implying that higher temperature provides favorable conditions for spawning and growth of the fish.

  • This study was carried out to compare the regional fishing gears and catches of the gape net with wings used in Jeonnam, Korea. The total length of the gear used in Yeosu, Wando and Jindo was 107.0m, 64.0m, 52.8m, and the size of codend was 4.3mm. 7.8mm. 9.8mm, respectively. The total number of bycatch species from anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) catches in Yeosu, Wando, and Jindo during the survey period were 21, 13, and 13 species. A total of individuals of anchovy accounted for over 90% out of total catches in all survey areas. The proportion of anchovy individuals was constantly high up to October in Yeosu, but it showed a sharp reduction to 18% in October in Wando with the increase of the individuals of Kammal thryssa (Thryssa kammalensis) and Big eyed herring (Sardinella zunasi). In Jindo, individuals of anchovy occupied over 99.8% out of total catches up to August. Since August, the number of individuals of Big eyed herring (Sardinella zunasi), Kammal thryssa (Thryssa kammalensis), and Slimy (Leiognathus nuchalis) has increased while the number of anchovy individuals were decreased.
