  • The Changgu Bay, a macrotidal coastal embayment of the west coast of Korea, is an area of extensive intertidal sedimentation. Three types of major sediment facies are identified based on grain size analysis: silt, sandy-silt, and silty-sand facies. It is found that intertidal sediment facies comprise a continuum of progressively finer sediments from lower flat to upper one. The X-radiography of the cores in the intertidal zone show a wide variety of physical and biogenic sedimentary structures. The major structures include bioturbation, current ripple and parallel-laminae. Bioturbations are observed in all core samples, especially in the silt flat zone. The degree of bioturbation increases laterally from sandy facies (low tide level) to silt facies (high tide level) due to favorable properties of fine mud for organisms. The ripple laminae, composed of current ripple foresets, characterize the silty-sand and sandy-silt flats. The parallel laminae are extensively bioturbated, and two types of laminae are distinguishable; thick-laminae with a thickness of 1 to 5mm and thin-laminae with a thickness of less than 1mm.

  • Recently, Choi et al.(2015) showed that a numerical simulation of the SandyDuck experiment under a directional random wave environment agreed well with the experimental data including the wave height distribution of the random waves, the well-developed longshore current and its energetic fluctuation. Based on the Boussinesq modeling, this study investigates the effect of the alongshore variations, which are induced by not only the field topography but also the phase interaction of multidirectional random waves in the surf zone wave field, on the rip currents. As a result, transient rip currents as well as topographical rip currents cause the complicated surfzone circulation and mixing process due to their interactions in a multi-directional random wave condition while the topographical rip currents are dominant in a monochromatic wave condition.

  • The sediments on the continental shelf off the west coast (middle part) of Korea are divided into northern sandy deposits and southern muddy sediments, respectively. The sandy sediments consist dominantly of quartz and feldspar grains, representing mature-stage sediment in composition. Further-more, the presence of iron-stained quartz grain and glauconite does indicate that the sediments are similar to the relict sediments on the outer shelf of Yellow Sea and East China Sea. These sandy sediments are interpreted as a basal sands that were deposited during the transgression period due to sea-level rise after to last glacial maximum (LGM). The tidal deposits in the Namyang Bay, the west coast of Korea are divided vertically into the upper layer of muddy sediments and the lower layer of sandy sediments. the upper layer sediments contain abundant rock fragments, and are interpreted as the modern tetragenous sediments. The lower layer sediments, on the other hand, are rich in quartz and feldspar grains, representing high index of sediment maturity ratio. the lower layer sandy deposits show the presence of iron-stained.

  • The clam, Gomphina melanaegis, which is commonly called the sandy beach clam because of its habitat, is a valuable organism in the sandy coast of East Sea, Korea. It is frequently observed in large populations between 0.5 and 5 meters. We have released 50,000 seedling, ranging from the diameter of approximately 3 mm, 2007, and 1,000,000 seedling, ranging from the diameter of approximately 0.2 mm, plus 100,000 adult individuals, ranging from the shell length of approximately 20~40 mm, 2008 at Jinha beach. The spawning period of G. melanaegis, was from June to August, and the main spawning occurred in July. This investigation was carried out to elucidate population distribution on the stocking area of sandy beach clam, G. melanaegis. The relationship between shell length and ring radius in each ring was investigated as a regression line. The relationship between the shell length and shell height of released young clam was SH=1.0105SL-4.7764 ($R^2=0.7905$). The relationship between the shell length and total weight of released young clam was $TW=0.0013SL^{2.3966}$($R^2=0.71$). It draws a deduction that the ring of this clam was produced once a year during the duration between June and August.

  • Natural soil is composed of particles of various sizes, and the shear behavior which is a kind of mechanical behavior of the soil is affected by the particle size distribution. In addition, since the natural soil contains a large mixture of coarse and fine grained soil, it is difficult to clearly understand the shear behavior of the soil. Therefore, a ring shear test was conducted on sandy soils that has various particle size distribution in order to identify the effect of the distribution on shear characteristics of soils. At this time, sand and silt were used for coarse and fine grained soils, respectively, to make sandy soils by changing the silt content. Also the water was supplied during the test to confirm shear characteristics of sandy soils with various particle size distributions. The result shows that the shear strength increases as the silt content increases, and the strength decreases as the silt content increases over the sand. Besides, residual shear strength gradually decreases because of the silt content when the water is supplied.

  • This is a study about how the increase of strength is changed when ground improvement material is mixed with either coastal clay or sandy soil. The ground improvement material was made from mixing a certain proportion of the slag which is by-products generated by smelting the iron ore and the paper fly ash which is formed by bumping up the paper. The ground improvement material was added to coastal soil and sandy soil each. And then according to ratio of water contents, number of curing days and ratio of mixture, specimen for uniaxial compression test was made. The change of uniaxial compression strength and the generated substances was analyzed while the specimen is being cured for 28days. The result of analysis shows that the strength of coastal clay was increased about eleven times more than that of sandy soil. This means that ettringite reaction by ground improvement material becomes more distinctive in the coastal clay than in the sandy soil.

  • In reclaimed loose sandy layer with dredged soil, liquefaction by the small scale earthquake coud be occurred easily. A study has been carried out to investigate the Liquefaction characteristic on Saemangeum dredged sandy soil, and compared with other results from the literature investigation. A series of undrained cyclic triaxial compression tests were performed on dredged sandy soil of Seamangeum area. The tests were performed at the three different initial relative densities(namely 30%, 50%, 70%), different cyclic stress ratio and different consolidation stress condition. The results of this study showed that cyclic stresses (${\sigma}_d$) increased linearly with increase of consolidation ratio, but the stress ratios (${\sigma}_d/2{\sigma}^{\prime}{_c}$) were almost same. The stress ratios were increased almost linearly with increase of relative density. Compared with other sandy soil, Saemangeum dredged sandy soil showed relatively weak liquifaction characteristics.

  • Soil shear strength parameters play a remarkable role in designing geotechnical structures such as retaining wall and dam. This study puts an effort to propose two accurate and practical predictive models of soil shear strength parameters via hybrid artificial neural network (ANN)-based models namely genetic algorithm (GA)-ANN and particle swarm optimization (PSO)-ANN. To reach the aim of this study, a series of consolidated undrained Triaxial tests were conducted to survey inherent strength increase due to addition of polypropylene fibers to sandy soil. Fiber material with different lengths and percentages were considered to be mixed with sandy soil to evaluate cohesion (as one of shear strength parameter) values. The obtained results from laboratory tests showed that fiber percentage, fiber length, deviator stress and pore water pressure have a significant impact on cohesion values and due to that, these parameters were selected as model inputs. Many GA-ANN and PSO-ANN models were constructed based on the most effective parameters of these models. Based on the simulation results and the computed indices' values, it is observed that the developed GA-ANN model with training and testing coefficient of determination values of 0.957 and 0.950, respectively, performs better than the proposed PSO-ANN model giving coefficient of determination values of 0.938 and 0.943 for training and testing sets, respectively. Therefore, GA-ANN can provide a new applicable model to effectively predict cohesion of fiber-reinforced sandy soil.

  • Electrokinetics technology is proposed for improving the recovery metals ion and oil from clay-sandy soil. In order to restore or extract them from clay-sandy soil, the gas produced by anode chamber is re-injected to the clay-sandy soil(sample). Samples produced in this study were completed to verify the proposed performance for 7 days by gradually increasing the pressure to the final pressure of 30psi($2.11kgf/cm^2$) through the compression process. Before compression, the copper rings were inserted into the sample, allowing us to observe the changes in appearance of copper ring after the end of the experiment. In this study, pressurized module and non-pressurized module were tested, respectively. The condition of test is a continuous process and the voltage gradient is 2V/cm during 24 hours. As a result, the efficiency of pressurized module is better than non-pressurized module.

  • Understanding the penetration behavior of the spilled oil is very important to remove itself and to minimize its impact on intertidal biological communities by earlier treatment of the oil. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of wave and tidal actions on the penetration of spilled oil and to evaluate main factors of oil penetration using a sandy-beach model. Infiltration processes into the sediments showed significant difference between seawater and crude oil. Seawater was infiltrated by both wave action and tidal fluctuation into the sediments in sandy beach. However, spilled crude oil penetrated into the sediments only by falling tides and not by wave action, and the first tide is most important for the penetration of stranded oil. Over 70% of bulk fraction in penetrated crude oil was concentrated to the top 2 cm sediment-layer when spilled oil volume was 1 L/$\textrm{m}^2$. Moreover, the penetration of stranded oil into the sandy beach sediments was strongly correlated with the oil viscosity affected by temperature.
