Recently, sandwich structures have been widely employed in load bearing structures due to their high specific stiffness and high specific strength. Some sandwich structures are subjected to not only static loads but also impact loads which might induce failure of structures at far less load than expected. Since sandwich structures can fail in various modes, estimation of the impact energy absorption is difficult. In this work, the impact failure modes and the impact energy absorption characteristics of the sandwich beams were predicted by the FE analysis and confirmed by the impact test. From the analytic and experimental results, the impact failure mode map was constructed with respect to non-dimensional parameters.
The vibration characteristic analysis of sandwich cylindrical shells subjected with magnetorheological (MR) elastomer and constraining layer are considered in this study. And, the discrete finite element method is adopted to calculate the vibration and damping characteristics of the sandwich cylindrical shell system. The effects of thickness of the MR elastomer, constraining layer, applied magnetic fields on the vibration characteristics of the sandwich shell system are also studied in this paper. Additionally, the rheological properties of the MR elastomer can be changed by applying various magnetic fields and the properties of the MR elastomer are described by complex quantities. The natural frequencies and modal loss factor of the sandwich cylindrical shells are calculated for many designed parameters. The core layer of MR elastomer is found to have significant effects on the damping behavior of the sandwich cylindrical shells.

An aluminium sandwich sheet is the material fabricated by adhering two aluminum panels to one plastic core. If it has the same bending stiffness as an steel panel, it is 65% lighter than steel panel and 30% lighter than aluminum panel. Therefore it is marked exclusively as god substitutive materials of steel body for improving fuel efficiency. But an aluminium sandwich sheet has problem of the lower formability than steel for automotive application. In this paper we intend to develop application technologies of an aluminum sandwich sheet for auto body panels from the selecting composed materials of aluminium sandwich sheets to fabricating prototype. We selected aluminium sandwich panels fabricated by Hoogovens company. Through formability tests we have finished the design and fabricated a mould and a prototype.
Broad writing on the examination of sandwich structures mirrors the significance of incorporating thermal loadings during their investigation stage. In the current work, an endeavor has been made to concentrate on sandwich FGM beams' bending behaving under thermal loadings utilizing shear deformation theory. Temperature-dependent material properties are used during the analysis. The formulation includes the transverse displacement field, which helps better predict the behavior of thick FGM beams. Three-different thermal profiles across the thickness of the beam are assumed during the analysis. The study has been carried out on both symmetric and unsymmetric sandwich FGM beams. It has been observed that the bending behavior of sandwich FGM beams is impacted by the temperature profile to which it is subjected. Power-law exponent and thickness of core also affect the behavior of the beam.

Multi-objective optimization was conducted to obtain the optimal configuration of a composite sandwich structure with honeycomb-foam hybrid core subjected to underwater shock waves, which can fulfill the demand for light weight and energy efficient design of structures against underwater blast. Effects of structural parameters on the dynamic response of the sandwich structures subjected to underwater shock waves were analyzed numerically, from which the correlations of different parameters to the dynamic response were determined. Multi-objective optimization of the structure subjected to underwater shock waves of which the initial pressure is 30 MPa was conducted based on surrogate modelling method and genetic algorithm. Moreover, optimization results of the sandwich structure subjected to underwater shock waves with different initial pressures were compared. The research can guide the optimal design of composite sandwich structures subjected to underwater shock waves.

In this work, the free vibration analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) sandwich plates with porosity is conducted using the p-version of the finite element method (FEM), which is based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The sandwich plate consists of two face-sheet layers of FGM and a homogeneous core layer. The obtained results are validated using convergence and comparison studies with previously published results. Five porosities distribution models of FGM sandwich plates are assumed and analyzed. The effect of the thickness ratio, boundary conditions, volume fraction exponents, and porosity coefficients of the top and bottom layers of FGM sandwich plates on the natural frequency are addressed.

A new thin sandwich panel composed of an aluminum expanded metal core adhesively jointed with stainless steel face sheets is introduced, and its mechanical behavior under three-point bending is investigated. The strength and stiffness are analyzed theoretically, and the press-formability and strength enhancement are evaluated experimentally. The specimens with the specific configurations exhibit face yielding well before face-core separation, which means that the sandwich panel can be formed by a press without failure. The measured load levels corresponding to the face yielding and the face-core separation agree fairly well with the theoretical estimations. For a given weight, the sandwich panel is superior to a solid panel in terms of strength, stiffness, and press-formability.
In the present study, buckling analysis of sandwich composite (carbon nanotube reinforced composite and fiber reinforced composite) Euler-Bernoulli beam in two configurations (core and layers material), three laminates (combination of different angles) and two models (relative thickness of core according to peripheral layers) using differential quadrature method (DQM) is studied. Also, the effects of porosity coefficient and different types of porosity distribution on critical buckling load are discussed. Using sandwich beam, it shows a considerable enhancement in the critical buckling load when compared to ordinary composite. Actually, resistance against buckling in sandwich beam is between two to four times more. It is also showed the critical buckling loads of laminate 1 and 3 are significantly larger than the results of laminate 2. When Configuration 2 is used, the critical buckling load rises about 3 percent in laminate 1 and 3 compared to the results of configuration 1. The amount of enhancement for laminate 3 is about 17 percent. It is also demonstrated that the influence of the core height (thickness) in the case of lower carbon volume fractions is ignorable. Even though, when volume fraction of fiber increases, differences grow smoothly. It should be noticed the amount of decline has inverse relationship with the beam aspect ratio. Among three porosity patterns investigated, beam with the distribution of porosity Type 2 (downward parabolic) has the maximum critical buckling load. At the end, the first three modes of buckling will be demonstrated to investigate the effect of spring constants.
This paper deals with free vibration of FG sandwich annular sector plates on Pasternak elastic foundation with different boundary conditions, based on the three-dimensional theory of elasticity. The plates with simply supported radial edges and arbitrary boundary conditions on their circular edges are considered. The influence of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) waviness, aspect ratio, internal pores and graphene platelets (GPLs) on the vibrational behavior of functionally graded nanocomposite sandwich plates is investigated in this research work. The distributions of CNTs are considered functionally graded (FG) or uniform along the thickness of upper and bottom layers of the sandwich sectorial plates and their mechanical properties are estimated by an extended rule of mixture. In this study, the classical theory concerning the mechanical efficiency of a matrix embedding finite length fibers has been modified by introducing the tube-to-tube random contact, which explicitly accounts for the progressive reduction of the tubes' effective aspect ratio as the filler content increases. The core of structure is porous and the internal pores and graphene platelets (GPLs) are distributed in the matrix of core either uniformly or non-uniformly according to three different patterns. The elastic properties of the nanocomposite are obtained by employing Halpin-Tsai micromechanics model. A semi-analytic approach composed of 2D-Generalized Differential Quadrature Method (2D-GDQM) and series solution is adopted to solve the equations of motion. The fast rate of convergence and accuracy of the method are investigated through the different solved examples. Some new results for the natural frequencies of the plate are prepared, which include the effects of elastic coefficients of foundation, boundary conditions, material and geometrical parameters. The new results can be used as benchmark solutions for future researches.

It has made a special study of bending behavior of F.R.P. sandwich beams with bonded 2nd-reinforced plies. Specimen's faces were made of chopped mat 300-450, roving clothes 570, core is urethane foam, resin is 713bp unsaturated polyester for ship construction and the mixture weight ratio of resin versus fiber was 55:45 for bending analysis. The purpose of this paper is to study the exact bending behavior of bonded area's deflection and stiffness depends upon various bonded F.R.P. (2nd reinforced ply) length and thickness on which covered joints and to find the optimum design for the sandwich structures. All results and suggestions are based on experiment and using thick face calculation.
