Coastal sand dune area is the important ecosystem as an ecotone which located between coastal area and terrestrial area. Moreover, it is very complicate landscape that have geomorphological interaction between erosion and accumulation of sand. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the sand dune ecosystem in view point of landscape scale including background landscape affecting origin of sand dune. Landscape ecological approach in the complicate ecosystem already started in developed countries, and it is applied to land management and biodiversity conservation strategies even in national scale. In this paper, landscape ecological analysis using landscape pattern analysis was carried out on 7 study areas (Yellow Sea : Hakampo and Doksan, South Sea : Namyeol and Balpo, East Sea : Hosan, Hupo and Goraebul) in Korean coastal sand dune ecosystem. Landscape elements were composed by 9 elements in these study areas. Major background landscape elements was the forest land and agricultural field. Namyeol (S06) has larger patch landscape compare to other areas. In patch shape indices, Hupo (E10) shows more complicate patch shapes. The high landscape heterogeneity showed in the Doksan sand dune area and that of Hosan. It shows that these areas were composed by various patch types. However, using landscape indices have to use very carefully because several variables have influence to the result such as scale and spatial pattern of study areas. Although landscape analysis through landscape indices shows sometimes difficult to explain the ecosystem, landscape scale approach on ecosystem assessment still useful to interpret in ecological process in large range of habitat.
Coastal sand dune systems are particularly fragile and threaten the environment. However, these systems provide fundamental ecosystem services to the nearby urban areas, acting, for example, as protective buffers against erosion. In this paper, we attempt to classify the biotope types of coastal sand dune ecosystems and select an index for the assessment of the conservation value. The types of biotopes are categorized based on the vegetation map; floras are examined in order to research the effects of hinterlands on coastal sand dunes. In addition, a naturalization rate and an urbanization index for each biotope type in hinterlands are analyzed. In the ecosystem of coastal sand dunes, the urbanization index and naturalization rate shows a higher value in sand dunes with areas of road, residential, and idle land in farm villages, rice fields, and fields. On the contrary, a lower value in the urbanization index and naturalization rate is present when typical biotope types, such as sand dune vegetation and natural Pinus thunbergii forests, are widely distributed. Based on these results, urbanization index and naturalization rate should be used as critical indices for the assessment of the ecosystem of costal sand dunes.
A syntaxonomical study about coastal sand dune vegetation in Kyungpook province was carried out. This study was accomplished by the methods of classical block-structure seeking and had-sorting of the $Z\"{u}rich-Montpellier$ School. The main purpose of this study is to clarify the syntaxonomical, synecological, syngeographical and syndynamical characteristics of coastal sand dune vegetation in Kyungpook province. The dune shrubs communities in Kyungpook province are consisted of 2 communities: Vitex rotundifolia community of southern type and Rosa rugosa community of northern type. And the dune grasslands communities are also consisted of 2 communities: Elymo-Caricetum kobomugi Ohba, miyawaki et $T\"{u}xen$ 1973 and carex kobomugi typical community. The subsidiary knowledges from this study will make possible to accumulate qualitative and quantitative information in the distribution pattern of coastal sand dune vegetation, and also will provide practical information for national biodiversity and conservation of coastal ecosystem.ecosystem.

Coastal sand dune area is an important ecosystem as an ecotone which is located between coastal area and terrestrial area. In order to understand the sand dune ecosystem in terms of its habitat characteristics, micrometeorological analysis was carried out in a coastal sand dune in Hakampo, Taeanhaean National Park, Korea. Micrometeorological measurements were made to monitor air and soil temperatures, relative humidity, soil water content, rainfall, solar radiation, wind speed, and wind direction. In contrary to a forest ecosystem, the coastal sand dune grassland ecosystem was relatively hotter and very humid with heavy rainfalls concentrated between June and July. The seasonal change of daily mean soil temperature was greater than that of air temperature by $2{\sim}3^{\circ}C$. Daily mean soil water content was less than 10% throughout the year. Also, the maximum wind speed of 156.7 m $s^{-1}$ was recorded on 7 October 2011. The observed seasonal wind direction was different from those observed at Seosan by KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration). To better understand the habitat characteristics in a costal sand dune grassland ecosystem, long-term multi-year measurements are needed.
This study aimed to evaluate the ecosystem services and environmental sustainability index(ESI) of the Hasidong-Anin coastal sand dune ecological and landscapes conservation area using rapid assessment tools. As a result, the analysis of the environmental sustainability index, derived from the evaluation of ecosystem services in the Hasidong-Anin coastal sand dune ecological and landscapes conservation area, revealed that regulating services, cultural services, and supporting services were all rated below 50%. Especially, cultural and supporting services were identified as lacking. With these results, a SWOT analysis was conducted to develop strategies for enhancing ecosystem services in the Hasidong-Anin coastal sand dune ecological and landscapes conservation area. Six approaches were formulated, involving leveraging strengths as opportunities (SO strategy), minimizing threats using strengths (ST strategy), utilizing opportunities to address weaknesses (WO strategy), and mitigating weaknesses and threats (WT strategy). In the future, when promoting projects to enhance ecosystem services in the Hasidong-Anin coastal sand dune ecological and landscapes conservation area, it will be essential to address issues such as the restoration of currently damaged areas and prevention of future erosion-related damages. This will lead to an elevation of the value of the Hasidong-Anin coastal sand dune ecological and landscape conservation area.
We conducted the study on the relationship between the distribution of coastal sand dune plants and edaphic factors from the shoreline to inland in sand dune ecosystem. The application of TWINSPAN classification based on 10 species, led to the recognition of three vegetative groups (A-C), which associated with their habitats (foredune, hummuck in semistable zone and stable zone). The associations were separated along soil gradient far from the seashore. The relationships between species composition and environmental gradients were explained by canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Distance from the shoreline was an important indicator to determine soil properties (pH, total ion contents, sand particle sizes, organic matters and nitrogen contents) from the seaward area to inland area and distribution pattern of coastal sand dune plants. Group A is foredune zone, characterized by Calystegia soldanella; group included typical foredune species such as Elymus mollis, Carex kobomugi, Ixeris repens, C. soldanella and Glehnia littoralis. Group B on semi-stabilized zone was characterized by Vitex rotundifolia, a perennial woody shrub. This group was associated the proportion of fine sand size (100 to 250 μm). The results on the proportion of soil particle size showed a transition in sand composition, particularly with respect to the proportion of fine sand size that occurred from the foredune ridge at 32.5 m to the Vitex rotundifolia community at 57.5 m from the shoreline. Group C on stabilized zone was characterized by Zoysia macrostachya, Lathyrus japonicus and Cynodon dactylon and were associated soil organic matter and nitrogen contents. The spatial distribution of plants in the Goraebul coastal sand dune system may result from the interactions between the plant species and environmental heterogeneity.
Naturalized plants are invaded through various routes and distributed throughout the nation. They are also invaded in the sand dune ecosystem and poses a threat ecological niche of indigenous sand dune plants. We studied the effects of salt stress on the plant growth to suggest the management plans of naturalized plants in the sand dune ecosystem. As a result of germination experiment according to the salt gradient, germination rate decreased as the higher concentration and tolerance range was up to 160 mM. As a result of seedling experiment according to salt gradient, mortality rate was up to 90% from 0 mM to 200 mM and 100% over 300 mM. The day of first death with different concentration was 18.5 days in 100 mM and 6 days in 800 mM since the experiment has started. In addition, the day of last death with different concentration was 29.5 days in 100 mM and 6 days in 800 mM. Therefore, two stages of management plans would be effective. The first one is to suppress the germination by salt spray over 170 mM before germination. The other one is to wither seedlings in a short period by salt spray over 600 mM.

The phytosocialogical study on the coastal sand dune vegetation of the East Coast was carried out. 180 phytosociological relev$\acute{e}$s of 62 sites in the East Coast were used in this study. In addition, already published syntaxa and the phytosociological hierarchy in Korea and Japan were used and comparative analyses of syntaxonomy, synecology, syngeography, and syndynamics were performed in the study. In this study, the flora was investigated 30 families, 66 genera, 77 taxa and 3 vegetation types were identified : the coastal drift-line annual communities (Calystegio soldanellae-Salsoletum komarovii), the dune glasslands communities (Elymo-Caricetum kobomugi, Carex kobomugi typical community, Elymus mollis community, Calystegia soldanella community, Zoysia macrostachya community, Cynodon dactylon community, Carex pumila community), and the dune shrubs communities (Linario-Viticetum rotundifoliae, Vitex rotundifolia community, Rosa rugosa community). The aspect of transition in the coastal sand dune vegetation of the East Coast were identified as follows : (1) reduced constancy degree and cover degree of Glehnia littoralis in each community; (2) lack of Ischaemum anthephoroides in Linario-Viticetum rotundifoliae (3) simplified species composition in Vitex rotundifolia community. Unstable habitat condition by external interference seemed to has caused the reduction of 2 taxa, Glehnia littoralis and Ischaemum anthephoroides, that usually grow in the second dune. In addition, we found changes in the distribution of the dune shrub communities influenced by rising temperature of the East Coast as results of the global warming. The results on the distribution of the dune shrub communities in this study demonstrated that the limit of the Rosa rugosa community made $0^{\circ}$ 44'N to the North and the vegetative limit of the Vitex rotundifolia community made $0^{\circ}$ 28'N to the North, respectively compared with the previously phytosociological studies. This study investigated the coastal sand dune vegetation, syntaxonomy, habitat condition and human disturbunce of the East Coast, and this will provide important information as basic data for the coastal ecosystem.

In this study, we aimed to quantify the population size and spatial distribution of three predatory Scarites species in coastal sand dunes. In June and August 2014, 252 pitfall traps were utilized to conduct a trapping web analysis at three distinct sites with varying vegetation dominance values. Scarites sulcatus had the largest estimated population in a 10 m2 area with a habitat density of 36.6 in a Vitex rotundifolia community area (site B) in the June survey. In contrast, Scarites aterrimus had the largest population size with a habitat density of 2.9 in a Calystegia soldanella community area (site A) in the August survey. Spatial distribution analysis revealed that S. sulcatus dominated the Vitex rotundifolia community without preference for a particular site, whereas S. aterrimus and Scarites terricola pacificus were primarily observed on the beach. The results indicated that the three Scarites species in the Sohwang coastal sand dune region exhibited differences in their spatial and temporal distributions in the coastal dune ecosystem in order to avoid competition and predation. In conclusion, our findings can be utilized to estimate the population density of the genus Scarites on the Korean Peninsula. The outcomes of this study will contribute to estimating insect population densities on the Korean Peninsula and developing investigative assessment methodologies.

The coastal dune ecosystem is one of the ecosystems under the most development pressure in Korea. Therefore, it is necessary to study the ecological location and related ecological phenomena of coastal dune plants, but related studies are lacking. Through this study, we intend to conduct research on the structure and restoration of dune plants, focusing on the coastal dunes in Jeju Island, which are affected by artificial development pressure and the continuous increase in tourists among many coastal dunes in Korea. Ecosystems of coastal sand dunes for vegetation survey in Jeju Island are selected based on naturalness and preservation. In this study, 23 major coastal dunes on Jeju Island including Udo were selected. In the coastal dunes of Jeju Island, a whole species survey and quadrat survey were carried out. The vegetation survey at study sites were conducted on May to September 2022, when the vegetation is clearly visible. At the survey site, the dune area was identified at the beginning and the plant species were recorded until no more new species appeared. Vegetation survey in the field was performed by 103 quadrat establishments and was conducted using Braun-Blanquet method. A total of 277 species appeared, and the most common species were Vitex rotundifolia and Calystegia soldanella. The frequency of both Vitex rotundifolia and Calystegia soldanella was approximately over 90%. The proportion of woody and herbaceous in all emerging species was 7.2% and 92.8%, respectively. The total number of species found in the quadrat survey was 98. As a result of classifying plant communities based on species dominance in the quadrats, it was analyzed into 30 plant communities. The plant communities that appeared with a frequency of 2 or more on the main island of Jeju were Vitex rotundifolia, Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii, Ischaemum antephoroides, Wedelia prostrata, Elymus mollis, Calystegia soldanella, Artemisia scoparia, and Tetragonia tetragonoides. The DCCA(detrended canonical correspondence analysis) based on the vegetation and environment factor matrix showed that the height and covers of the dominant plant species explain significantly the variation and distribution of coastal sand dune species on Jeju island. Thus, we may propose a plan to restore the coastal dunes of Jeju island as helping colonization and establishment of mainly sand dune native perennials and trees, preserving native plant communities that are declining and preserving present tree strips of Pinus thunbergii, Litsea japonica, Pittosporum tobira and Vitex rotundifolia.
