  • Because the allowable current loading of buried electrical transmission cables is frequently limited by the maximum permissible temperature of the cable or of the surrounding ground, there is a need fur cable backfill materials that can maintain a low thermal resistivity even while subjected to high temperatures for prolonged periods. Temperatures greater than $50^{\circ}C\;to\;60^{\circ}C$ may lead to breakdown of cable insulation and thermal runaway if the surrounding backfill material is unable to dissipate the heat as rapidly as it is generated. This paper describes the results of studies aimed at the development of backfill material to reduce the thermal resistivity. A large number of different additive materials were tested to determine their applicability as a substitute material. Tests were carried out for Dongrim river sand, a relatively uniform sand of very high thermal resistivity, $50^{\circ}C-cm/watt\;at\;10\%$ water content, $260^{\circ}C-cnuwatt$ when dry, and Jinsan granite screenings, and D-2 (sand and granite screenings mixture), E-1 (rubble and granite screenings mixture), a well-graded materials with low thermal resistivity, about $35^{\circ}C-cm/watt$ when at 10 percent water content, $100^{\circ}C-cm/watt$ when dry. Based on this research, 3 types of backfill materials were suggested for improved materials with low thermal resistivity and the applicability was assessed through field tests.

  • Because the allowable current loading of buried electrical transmission cables is frequently limited by the maximum permissible temperature of the cable or of the surrounding ground, there is a need for cable backfill materials that can maintain a low thermal resistivity (less than 5$0^{\circ}C$-cm/watt) even while they are subjected to high temperatures for prolonged periods. Temperatures greater than 5$0^{\circ}C$ to 6$0^{\circ}C$ may lead to breakdown of cable insulation and thermal nlnaway if the surrounding backfill material is unable to dissipate the heat as rapidly as it is generated. This paper describes the results of studies aiming at the development of backfill material to reduce the thermal resistivity. A large number of different additive materials were tested to determine their applicability as a substitute material. Tests were called out for DonUing river sand, a relatively uniffrm sand of very high thermal resistivity (5$0^{\circ}C$ -cnuwatt at 10% water content, 26$0^{\circ}C$-cm/watt when dry), and Jinsan granite screenings, and A-2(sand and gravel mixture), E-1 (rubble and granite screenings mixture), a well-graded materials with low thermal resistivity (about 35$^{\circ}C$ -cm/watt when at 10 percent water content, 10$0^{\circ}C$-cm/watt when dry). Based on this research, 3 types of backfill materials were suggested for improved materials with low thermal resistivity.

  • Because the allowable current loading of buried electrical transmission cables is frequently limited by the maximum permissible temperature of the cable or of the surrounding ground, there is a need for cable backfill materials to be maintained at a low thermal resistivity during the service period. Temperatures greater than $50^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$ may lead to breakdown of cable insulation and thermal runaway if the surrounding backfill material is unable to dissipate the heat as rapidly as it is generated. This paper describes the results of studies aimed at the development of backfill material to reduce the thermal resistivity. A large number of different additive materials were tested to determine their applicability as a substitute material. The results of Dong-rim river sand (relatively uniform) show that as water content level increases, thermal resistivity tends to decrease, whereas the thermal resistivity on dry condition is very high value($260^{\circ}C-cm/watt$). In addition, other materials(such as Jinsan granite screenings, A-2(sand and gravel mixture), E-1(rubble and granite screenings mixture) and SGFC(sand, gravel, fly-ash and cement mixture)) are well-graded materials with low thermal resistivity($100^{\circ}C-cm/watt$ when dry). Based on this research, 4 types of improved materials were suggested as the environmentally friendly backfill materials with low thermal resistivity.

  • the shaking table tests for 5 different model sections are performed to investigate the behaviors of quay walls during earthquakes and to evaluate the seismic performance of quay walls with countermeasures. 5 different model sections describe the cases of dense soil and loose soil in the foundation repectively the case to which gravel backfill was applied and the cases to which light material replacement method and sand compction pile method was applied repectively for sesmic countermeasure methods. Pore water pressures accelerations and deformations in quay walls and grounds are analyzed. As a result the softening of foundation and backfill soils have much influence on the behaviors of quay walls. Also light material replacement method and sand compaction pile method are effective in improving the seismic performance of quay walls.

  • In this research, finite element method was carried out to evaluate the defomation of pipe and surface displacement for backfill of underground ficility. Various conditions for analysis were employer, including two different pipes(PE and concrete pipe), two different excavation depth(60cm and 150cm) and width(1.5D and 2D), a regular sand backfill, and four different flowable backfills. The vertical deformation of 60 cm diameter for PE was measured three times more than that of 30 cm diameter. The measured deformations for regular backfill and four flowable backfills were 0.320mm, and 0.135mm to 0.155mm, respectively. It ratio was around 40%. In case of 30cm diameter of concrete pipe, the measured vertical defomation was around 0.004mm for all the backfill materials. In case of installation depth, the effect of flowable backfill for flexible pipe is better than for rigid pipe. There is little effect on the deformation of concrete pipe with regular sand backfill and flowable backfill.

  • It is necessary to develop a national design method for surface reinforcement of very soft ground because most current design works rely on crude empirical correlations. In this paper, the mechanical behavior of very soft ground that is surficially reinforced was investigated with the aid of a sents of numerical analysis. Several material properties of each dredged soft ground, reinforcement and backfill sand mat have been exercised the numerical analysis in order to compare the result of numerical analysis with those of the laboratory model test. Through the matching process between the numerical and experimental result, it is possible to find the appropriate material properties of the dredged soft ground, reinforcements and backfill sand mat. These verified material properties permit to show the effect of the stiffness of reinforcement and the thickness of sand mat on the overall deformation.

  • In the companion paper (Paik 2006), a new formulation for calculating the nonlinearly distributed active earth pressure acting on a caisson backfilled with crushed rock and sand is proposed, and it takes into account arching effects as well as difference in internal friction angles and unit weights between sand and crushed rock. In this study, in order to partially check the accuracy of the proposed equation, the results of the proposed equation are compared with the equation proposed by Paik (2003a) for caissons with rough surface and homogeneous backfill, and are compared with results of Rankine's theory for caissons with smooth surface and homogeneous backfill. In addition, a parametric study is performed to investigate the effect of $phi_{r}$, $phi_{s}$, $\delta_{r}$, $\gamma_{r}$, $\gamma_{s}$ and $\beta$ on the magnitude of active earth pressure acting on the caisson, and construction methods for minimizing active earth pressure on the caisson are also provided based on the results of a parametric study.

  • In the case of underground power utilities pipe such as circular pipe, the most difficult problem is low compaction efficiency of the bottom of pipe inducing the failure of utilities. To overcome this problem, various studies have been performed and one of these is CLSM (controlled low strength materials) accelerated flow ability. CLSM has already been stage of commercial use in the foreign countries led by power company. In this study, we estimated the behavior of flexible pipe with flowable backfill materials and sand to compare on the DB24 load. The results showed that the deformation of flexible pipe is affected by types of backfill materials. CLSM shows better behavior characteristics than compacting sand. But numerical and analytical results that peformed to compare to the field test results showed big gap with the field results.

  • This paper deals with the result of thermal resistance test with backfill materials as bottom ash by using backfill material. Bottom ash, one of coal ashes, can be reused to replace sand because of its similar engineering properties. But without considering the thermal property, the abuse of bottom ash resulted in damage for existing structures. To investigate the thermal conductivity of bottom ash, laboratory tests for thermal resistance of that were carried out in this study. Thermal properties of bottom ash was compared with those of in-situ soil, sand, backfill material which can be applied as filling material. The tests were classified by water contents defined as the major influence factor. The beneficial use method of bottom ash was suggested as backfilling material.
