Anthracnose of Achyranthes japonica Caused by Glomerella cingulata in Korea (Glomerella cingulata에 의한 쇠무릎 탄저병)

  • Anthracnose symptoms were observed on the community area in Sancheong-gun, Gyeongnam Province in Korea. The symptoms occurred on leaf and stem, and then plants eventually were died. Colony color was whitish gray to dark gray on potato dextrose agar. Conidia were single celled . colorless, cylindrical and was 10.2~20.4$\times$3.6$\times$6.0$\mu$m in size. Appressoria were dark brown, ovate to obovate and 6.2~10.5$\times$4.3$\times$8.6$\mu$m in size. Perithecia were brown to black in color and shaped as globose to obpyriform and 72.6~284.7$\mu$m in size. Asci were clavate to cylindrical in shape and 63.6~98.8$\times$8.3~12.5$\mu$m in size. Ascospores were cylindrical. fusiform, slightly curved at the center and 9.6~21.8$\times$4.0~6.0$\mu$m in size. Optimum temperature fur growth was 3$0^{\circ}C$. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenecity test on host plants, the fungus was identified as Glomerella cingulata . This is the first report on the Anthracnose of achyranthes caused by Glomerella cingulata in Korea.

Management Strategies of Local Cold Air in Jeongmaek for utilizing urban Ventilation Corridor - A Case Study of the Nak-nam Jeongmaek - (바람길 활용을 위한 정맥의 찬공기 관리 방안 - 낙남정맥을 사례로 -)

  • As urban heat environment problems occur due to climate change, urban thermal environmental problems such as heat waves and tropical nights are becoming more serious in cities. In South Korea, forest areas favorable for generating cold air account for about 63 percent of the land area. Furthermore, the Jeongmaek, the axis of the main mountain ranges of Korea, is located close to the cities. Hence, the management of cold air is an effective way to improve the thermal environment of Korean cities. We selected the Nak-nam Jeongmaek located in the southern part of Korean Peninsular as well as two cities (Jinju-si and Sancheong-gun) located at the Jeongmaek to analyze its cold air characteristics and suggest management strategies of cold air. We used KALM (Kaltluftabflussmodell), a cold air simulation model developed in Germany and identified both the cold air flow and the height of cold air layer generated during 6 hours at night. As a result, the cold air flow generated in the Jeongmaek became clear and the height of cold air layer increased with time. Based on the results, we proposed management plans to maintain and expand the cold air flow. For example, forest areas with active cold air generation were designated as 'cold air conservation areas', and areas requiring management for good cold air flow were as 'cold air management areas'. This study is expected to be useful for establishing systematic urban ventilation plan to improve thermal environment in Korea cities.

Comparative Analysis of the Flavor Compounds in Cultivated Chrysanthemum indicum L. (국내 육성 감국의 품종별 향기성분 비교 분석)

  • This study investigated the chemical composition of four Korean cultivated Chrysanthemum indicum L. (Gamguk 1 ho, Gamguk 2 ho, Gamguk 3 ho, and Wonhyang) which are used in the food and fragrance industries to identify their volatile flavor compounds. These compounds were analyzed using headspace GC-MS from plant samples cultivated in the same region of Korea (Sancheong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do). A total of 23 compounds were identified, eight of which were common across the four cultivars. The major flavor components in the three Gamguk plants were identified as 3-carene, camphene, ${\beta}$-phellandrene, eucalyptol and (+)-camphor. Eleven compounds, including (+)-camphor at 31.40%, were identified in Gamguk 1 ho. Gamguk 2 ho was found to contain 12 flavor compounds, predominant of which was camphene at 25.60%. Thirteen compounds including (+)-camphor (26.88%) were identified in Gamguk 3 ho, while 17 were detected in the Wonhyang cultivar, including trans-piperitol (47.33%), sabinene, and ${\gamma}$-terpinyl acetate. These results indicate differences in the type and ratio of functional volatile flavor ingredients in Chrysanthemum indicum L. cultivars which is highly valuable as material for fragrance product development.

Analysis of Influence on Stream Water Quality by Soil Erosion Control Structures (사방공작물이 계류수질에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • This study was carried out to establish the construction guidelines of soil erosion control structures for a restoration of mountain stream with analysis of water quality around constructed soil erosion control structures in mountain streams. Water pH of the Uidong valleys in Bukhansan (Mt.) was similar between the constructed soil erosion control structures of lower stream areas [pH 6.53(6.25~6.82)] and the non-constructed areas of upper stream areas [pH 6.32(5.73~6.90)]. Mean concentration of dissolved oxygen was also similar between the constructed soil erosion control structures of lower steam areas [10.2 mg/L(9.9~10.4 mg/L)] and the non-constructed areas of upper stream areas [10.3 mg/L (9.6~10.6 mg/L)]. Mean electric conductivity was similar between the lower [$63.9{\mu}S/cm$ ($32.6{\sim}120.4{\mu}S/cm$)]a nd the upper stream areas [$62.2{\mu}S/cm$ ($40.3{\sim}89.5{\mu}S/cm$)]. Mean concentration of anions was also similar between the lower [15.94 mg/L (3.43~7.98 mg/L)] and the upper stream areas [14.51 mg/L (2.56~4.29 mg/L)]. Water pH of the Honggei valleys in Sancheong-gun was similar between the lower [pH 6.86(6.50~7.10)] and the upper stream areas [pH 6.89(6.61~7.12)]. Mean concentration of dissolved oxygen was also similar between the lower [11.9 mg/L(11.5~12.3 mg/L)] and the upper stream areas [12.2 mg/L (11.6~12.6 mg/L)]. Mean electric conductivity was similar between the lower [$633.4{\mu}S/cm$ ($31.6{\sim}34.6{\mu}S/cm$)] and the upper stream areas [$32.7{\mu}S/cm$ ($31.4{\sim}34.3{\mu}S/cm$)]. Mean concentration of anion was also similar to both stream areas [1.0 mg/L (0.1~2.2 mg/L)]. Water quality in the Uidong and the Honggei valleys was not significantly different between the constructed soil erosion control structures of lower stream areas and the non-constructed areas of upper stream areas. It will be needed to study the time-series analysis of water quality before and after the construction of soil erosion control structure the restoration of mountain streams because the water quality in mountain streams could be affected during the construction processes of structures.

Changes in the Quality of Loin from Pigs Supplemented with Dietary Methyl Sulfonyl Methane during Cold Storage (식이유황(硫黃)을 급여한 돈육 등심의 저온저장 중 품질특성 변화)

  • This study was conducted to compare the quality of the pork from finishing pigs that were fed diets containing different levels of methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM). A total of 135 crossbred pigs $(Landrace{\times}Yorkshire{\times}Duroc)$ were fed either with a control commercial diet or the control diet supplemented with 300- and 500-ppm MSM for 158d. The pigs were slaughtered at approximately 110kg live weight and were transported to the local slaughterhouse for electrical stunning followed by exsanguination. After the slaughter, the pork muscles were dissected from each carcass, placed in wrap package bags, and stored for 8d at $4^{\circ}C$. The TEARS values of the pigs that were fed MSM diets were significantly lower (p<0.05) compared with those of the pigs that were fed with non-supplemented diets. The Na, Mg, and Ca contents of the dietary MSM were significantly lower (p<0.05) than those of the non-supplemented diets, but the Fe, Cu, and Zn contents of the dietary MSM were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of the non-supplemented diets, and the increased level of MSM supplementation resulted in higher sulfur contents. There was no difference among the diets in terms of amino acid content. The dietary supplementation with MSM, however, led to increased saturated fatty acid and decreased unsaturated fatty acid (%) in the pork muscles (p<0.05). The sensory panelists recorded greater marbling and overall acceptability scores in the samples with 500-ppm-MSM dietary supplementation (p<0.05). These data suggest that supplementing pig diets with MSM can improve the quality of the pork and can enhance the eating quality because the sensory panels found that the pork from pigs that were fed an MSM-supplemented diet had better sensory characteristics.

Reclassification of Winter Barley Cultivation Zones in Korea Based on Recent Evidences in Climate Change (최근의 기후변화를 고려한 가을보리 안전재배지대 구분)

  • Recent warm winters were evaluated for a possible shifting of the northern limit for winter barley cultivation in Korea. Therefore, safe zones for winter barley cultivation were reclassified based on the average and minimum January air temperature in recent years. The results are as follows: By analysis of mean values of January average air temperatures for 30 years (1971-2000), the northern limits for safe cultivation of hulled, naked, and malting barley were Ganghwa - Icheon - Chungju - Chunyang - Goseong, Cheonan - Geumsan - Mungyeong - Andong - Sokcho, and Gwangju - Jangheung - Sancheong - Pohang - Uljin lines, respectively. Meanwhile, based on the January average air temperature of 14 years (1987-2000) with warmer winters, the safe cultivation zone of winter barley shifted northward of the normal (1971-2000). So, the northern limits for hulled, naked, and malting barley were Pocheon - Chuncheon - Wonju - Yangpyeong - Chunyang, Ganghwa - Icheon - Chungju - Uiseong - Goseong, and Gunsan - Suncheon - Jinju - Miryang - Yeongdeok - Uljin lines, respectively. Winter barley cultivars with the strongest tolerance to low temperature can be grown up to the adjacent areas of Taebaek Mountains (that is, Inje, Hongcheon, Jecheon, and Taebaek areas). Based on January mean air temperatures of 10-year return period for 30 years (1971-2000), the northern limits for hulled and naked barley were Boryeong - Namwon - Geochang - Gumi - Goseong and Seocheon - Jeongeup - Hapcheon - Yeongdeok - Sokcho lines, respectively. It ~ppears that malting barley can be cultivated only at southern coastal areas (that is, Busan, Tongyeong, Yeosu, and Wando areas). On the other hand, based on the weather conditions of 14 years (1987-2000) with warmer winters, the northern limits for hulled, naked, and malting barley were Ganghwa - Icheon - Yeongju - Goseong, Seosan - Namwon - Mungyeong - Andong - Sokcho, and Gwangju - Jangheung - Sacheon - Ulsan - Uljin lines, respectively. The northern limit for winter barley cultivars including Olbori with the strongest tolerance to low temperature was the Ganghwa - Wonju - Chungju - Chunyang - Goseong line.
