  • It is well known that the quality of sample significantly determines the accuracy of soil parameters for laboratory testing. Although sampling disturbance has been studied over the last few decades, the theoretical investigation of soil disturbance due to sampling penetration has been rarely reported. In this paper, an analytical solution for estimating the soil disturbance due to sampling penetration was presented using cavity expansion method. Analytical results in several cases reveal that the soil at different location along the sample centerline experiences distinct phases of strain during the process of sampling penetration. The magnitude of induced strain is dependent on the position of the soil element within the sampler and the sampler geometry expressed as diameter-thickness ratio D/t and length-diameter ratio L/D. Effects of sampler features on soil disturbance were also studied. It is found that the induced maximum strain decreases exponentially with increasing diameter-thickness ratio, indicating that the sampling disturbance will reduce with increasing diameter or decreasing wall thickness of sampler. It is also found that a large length-diameter ratio does not necessarily reduce the disturbance. An optimal length-diameter ratio is suggested for the further design of improved sampler in this study.

  • To evaluate the engineering properties of soil, the laboratory test always is carried out using samples obtained from the field. There are many studies to estimate the effect of sampling disturbance. The objective of this study appraises the disturbance using the shear wave velocity. The new shelby tube which three transducers are installed every 20cm interval is used. To laboratory tests, the large-scale consolidometer (calibration chamber) is used. During 1cm penetration, the shear wave velocity is measured by every transducer. The initial sampling disturbance is assessed through the velocity difference from bottom to right upside transducer. After finishing the sampling, the velocity is still measured every time to assess the soil disturbance in shelby tube itself. Through the measured velocity, the effect of disturbance is appraised. This study suggests that the sampling disturbance of shelby tube is effectively evaluated using shear wave velocity.

  • We have employed two methods to remove slime at the end of the sampler in clay layers. The first method is a sampling process that harnesses low pressure to clean up the ground around the sampler tip. The second method, in consideration of a disturbed layer, involves a technique of inserting the sampler 50 cm deep into the ground before cleaning up the verge of the sampler by using high pressure. Physical and mechanical properties of these two methods have been compared and analyzed to investigate how different sampling methods affect degree of disturbance. The first method shows little disturbance since the unconfined compression test results in quite greater E$\_$50//q$\_$u/ in the first method than in the second method. On the other hand, the consolidation test results in a slightly greater compression index in the second method than in the first method, when their indexes are compared in the same depth. This suggests that the second method demonstrates less disturbance than the first method does. It is assumed that the second method may reduce disturbance slightly, However, we suspect that choosing any of the two methods would not obtain a considerable difference in sampling.

  • In this study, we have compared with the differences between the extent of sampling disturbance and consolidation characteristics by experiments, which are consolidation test and have been performed with Kwang-Yang clay samples. The effects on sampling disturbance to consolidation characteristics of soft clay have been inverstigated by using soil samples obtained from large block sampling and piston sampling methods. Through a few experiments, we've got important results which are that the consoilidation parameter of large block sample(Pc, Cc, Cv) is much larger than the value of parameter of piston sample. We've also found the fact that the large block sample using the large size sampler is much better than piston sample in the quality of goods to lessen the effects on disturbance of sampling. When compared to the parameter of consolidation along with the methods of experiment, we found that the result performed by large size consolidation test is the greatest one and CRS is much better than standard consolidation test to seek for proper parameter.

  • In general, soil characteristics are estimated through the sample gathered by field boring without considering sample disturbance. However, soil characteristics must be changed by the degree of sample disturbance. Therefore it be need to estimate the soil characteristic considering sample disturbance which can be occurred by the change of stress condition, sampling technique and handling method. On this study, we analyzed the sample disturbance by using the methods of volume change, residual effective stress, elastic modulus and the curve of consolidation tests. In order to estimate the relationship between sample disturbance and soil characteristics, we used the piston sample and the block sample. As the results, it should be considered in design that the disturbance of the block sample, which affects the strength and compression properties of clay, is smaller than the disturbance of piston sample.

  • The total recovery ratio test on undisturbed clay soil sampling in the field and the finite element method analysis on modified static state of penetration process were conducted for the purpose of deciding the most important factor among the shape factors of thin wall tube. The adhesion between tube wall and soil did not decrease although internal clearance ratio of tube increased within the little change of tube area ratio. The most part of disturbance occurred in the tip of sampling tube during the penetration. The longitudinal displacement was larger than the lateral displacement because soil was confined laterally after being entered into tube, and also the longitudinal displacement was larger in the upper part of the sample tube than in the lower part.

  • To get improved soil parameters in the laboratory tests, the effects of sample disturbance should be excluded as much as possible. A collaborative research between Dong-A University and PHRI (Japan) was conducted to investigate the effects of sample disturbance due to sampling techniques and samplers on Pusan clays. The results of unconfined compression and consolidation tests performed on the clay samples taken by them have been compared in terms of soil parameters and sample disturbance. As the result of the study, it was found that when the Korean sampler was used with a different technique of cleaning the borehole bottom and removing slime before inserting and penetrating the sampler tube, similar to the one commonly used in Japanese practice, the quality of samples could be greatly improved. Furthermore, the CRS test with the rate of 0.02%/min yielded larger values of consolidation parameters and better degree of sample disturbance than those of oedometer test, due to the difference in testing method.

  • A multirate state feedback control (MRSFC) method is proposed for systems sensitive to disturbance and noise based on the multirate estimator design using current estimator. MRSFC updates the controller output slower than the measurement sampling fiequency of system output by a lifting factor $R=T_c/T_s$ The closed-loop MRSFC system is less sensitive to disturbance and noise due to filtering effect than the conventional single-rate control system The multirate estimator gain can be obtained by solving a conventional pole placement problem such that MRSFC has the same spectrum of eigenvalues in the s-plane as the single-rate control. We applied the proposed multirate state feedback controller to a galvanometer servo system Simulation and experimental results show that settling and tracking performances are improved compared with a conventional single-rate pole placement control (PPC).
