We analyzed the high-resolution wind data of Aircraft-Based Observation from the Mode-Selective Enhanced Surveillance (Mode-S EHS) data in Korea. For assessment of its quality, the Mode-S wind data was compared with the ECMWF ReAnalysis 5 (ERA5) reanalysis and Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay (AMDAR) data for more than 3-months from 7 May 2021 to 24 August 2021 near Incheon International Airport, Korea. Considering that the AMDAR reports are not provided by all commercial aircraft, total number of the Mode-S derived wind data with a second sampling rate was about twice larger than that of available AMDAR wind data. After the quality control procedures by removing erroneous samples, it was found that the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the Mode-S retrieved winds are similar to that from the AMDAR winds. In particular, between 550 and 650 hPa levels, RMSE of the Mode-S (AMDAR) zonal wind against ERA5 data was about 2.3 m s-1 (1.9 m s-1), and those increased to 3.3 m s-1 (2.4 m s-1) in 200~500 hPa levels. A similar trend was found in the meridional wind, but a distinct positive mean bias of 2.16 m s-1 was observed between 875 and 1,000 hPa levels. Winds retrieved from the Mode-S also showed a good agreement directly with AMDAR data. As the Mode-S provides a large amount of data with a reliable quality, it can be useful for both data assimilation in the numerical weather prediction model and situational awareness of wind and turbulence for aviation safety in Korea.

Estimation of cable tension through proper measurements is one of the essential tasks in evaluating the safety of cable structures. In this paper, a study on cable tension estimation using the built-in accelerometer and camera in a smartphone was conducted. For the experimental study, visual displacement measurement using a smartphone camera and acceleration measurement using a built-in accelerometer were performed in the cable-stayed bridge model. The estimated natural frequencies and transformed tensions from these measurements were compared with the theoretical values and results from the normal visual displacement method. Through comparison, it can be seen that the error between the method using the smartphone and the normal visual displacement is sufficiently small to be acceptable. It has also been shown that those errors are much smaller than the difference between the values calculated by the theoretical model. These results show that the deviation according to the type of measurement method is not large and it is rather important to use an appropriate mathematical model. In conclusion, in the case of cable tension estimation, it can be said that the visual displacement measurement and acceleration using a smartphone can be a sufficiently applicable method, just like the normal visual displacement method. It is also noteworthy that the smartphone accelerometer has a larger magnitude error and has more limitations such as high-frequency sampling instability compared to the visual displacement method, but shows almost the same performance as the visual displacement method in this cable tension estimation.

Removal of variability in spectra data before the application of chemometric modeling will generally result in simpler (and presumably more robust) models. Particularly for sparsely sampled data, such as typically encountered in diode array instruments, the use of Savitzky-Golay (S-G) derivatives offers an effective method to remove effects of shifting baselines and sloping or curving apparent baselines often observed with scattering samples. The application of these convolution functions is equivalent to fitting a selected polynomial to a number of points in the spectrum, usually 5 to 25 points. The value of the polynomial evaluated at its mid-point, or its derivative, is taken as the (smoothed) spectrum or its derivative at the mid-point of the wavelength window. The process is continued for successive windows along the spectrum. The original paper, published in 1964 [1] presented these convolution functions as integers to be used as multipliers for the spectral values at equal intervals in the window, with a normalization integer to divide the sum of the products, to determine the result for each point. Steinier et al. [2] published corrections to errors in the original presentation [1], and a vector formulation for obtaining the coefficients. The actual selection of the degree of polynomial and number of points in the window determines whether closely situated bands and shoulders are resolved in the derivatives. Furthermore, the actual noise reduction in the derivatives may be estimated from the square root of the sums of the coefficients, divided by the NORM value. A simple technique to evaluate the actual convolution factors employed in the calculation by the software will be presented. It has been found that some software packages do not properly account for the sampling interval of the spectral data (Equation Ⅶ in [1]). While this is not a problem in the construction and implementation of chemometric models, it may be noticed in comparing models at differing spectral resolutions. Also, the effects on parameters of PLS models of choosing various polynomials and numbers of points in the window will be presented.

In this research, the microwave oven drying method was investigated as a potential accurate testing approach for determining the water content of fresh concrete. To do so, water content estimation formulas employed in three prominent oven drying test methods were selected, and the calculation principles for each equation, along with potential error factors arising during the actual testing process, were considered. Moreover, a concrete test was conducted to validate the possible error factors. Consequently, it was confirmed that estimation errors in the water content of fresh concrete can occur due to sample deviations arising during the wet screening process for creating mortar specimens or deviations in the coarse aggregate sampling quantity during the sample collection process.
This study introduces an enhanced sound source localization technique, bolstered by a data-driven deep learning approach, to improve the precision and accuracy of direction of arrival estimation. Focused on refining Time Difference Of Arrival (TDOA) based sound source localization, the research hinges on accurately estimating TDOA from cross-correlation functions. Accurately estimating the TDOA still remains a limitation in this research field because the measured value from actual microphones are mixed with a lot of noise. Additionally, the digitization process of acoustic signals introduces quantization errors, associated with the sampling frequency of the measurement system, that limit the precision of TDOA estimation. A deep learning-based approach is designed to overcome these limitations in TDOA accuracy and precision. To validate the method, we conduct comprehensive evaluations using both two and three-microphone array configurations. Moreover, the feasibility and real-world applicability of the suggested method are further substantiated through experiments conducted in an anechoic chamber.
Ultrasonic method is widely used for the evaluation of weathering index and of degree of deterioration because it is easily applicable $in$$situ$. The basic idea of the method is that the ultrasonic velocity decreases as a rock is being weathered. Thus, the difference of ultrasonic velocities between fresh rock and weathered rock indicates the degree of weathering. In this method, the ultrasonic velocity of fresh rock is assumed to be 5,000 m/s. However, this assumption can cause significant errors in estimating weathering index, especially in case that those rocks of the same type have a wide range of ultrasonic velocities such as in Korea. Therefore, we obtained twenty rock specimens and sixty core samples commonly used for stone cultural heritages in Korea, and measured ultrasonic velocities. From the results, we found that the ultrasonic velocities of the same rock type, granite samples range from 3,118 to 5,380 m/s, and that the estimated weathering index can be highly biased if we use the fixed value of 5,000 m/s. We created a database (DB) by combining the measurement data and reported it. We also measured ultrasonic velocities by direct and indirect methods to quantify the calibration coefficient for each sampling site. We found that the calibration coefficients vary widely from site to site (1.31-1.76). Other factors, such as operator bias and temperature did not show any significant effect on errors in ultrasonic velocity measurements. Lastly, we applied our ultrasonic velocity DB and calibration coefficients to a stone cultural heritage, Bonghwang-ri Buddha statue. Our estimation of the weathering index was 0.3, 0.1 smaller than that by conventional method. The degree of deterioration was also different, "moderately weathered", while conventional method gave "highly weathered". Since other independent studies reported that the degree of deterioration of the Buddha statue was "moderately weathered", our estimation seems to be more accurate. Thus our method can help accurately evaluate the weathering index and the conservation planning for a stone cultural heritage.
The aim of this analysis was to investigate the relationship between the level of safety behavior and the level of oral health behavior among Korean children. Data used in this analysis were from the 2005 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). A representative sample of 4,292 children aged from three to eleven years who completed both health interview and health behavior survey. Simple and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted. All analyses were weighted and SAS 9.1 survey data analysis procedures were used to estimate standard errors accounting for the complex sampling design of the KNHANES. More than seventy percent of children did not keep general safety behaviors except seat on back seat in a car. About seventy five percent of children had experience of preventive oral care during last one year, but about fifty six percent of children brush their teeth twice a day. Socioeconomic status and health behaviors were significantly related in three to six old age group only (p<.05). Generally significant relationship was not found between general safety and oral health behaviors. Among Korean children, general safety and oral health behaviors might be not related each other. Education for general safety behaviors should be underlined for all children. Especially preschool-children with low socioeconomic status need to be educated for healthy behaviors.
One of the advantages of SP methods is the possibility of getting a number of responses from each respondent. However, when the repeated observations from each respondent are analysed by applying the simple modeling method, a potential problem is created because of upbiased significance due to the repeated observation from each respondent. This study uses a variety of approaches to explore this issue and to test the robustness of the simple model estimates. Among several different approaches, the Jackknife method and Kocurs method were applied. The Jackknife method was implemented using a program JACKKNIFE. The model estimate results of Jackknife method and Kocurs method were compared with those of the uncorrected estimates in order to test whether there was repeated measurement problem or not and the extent to which this problem affected the model estimates. The standard errors between the uncorrected model estimates and Jackknife estimates were also compared. The results reveals that the t-ratios of Kocurs are much lower than those of the uncorrected method and Jackknife estimates, indicating that Kocurs method underestimates the significance of the coefficients. Jackknife method produced the almost same coefficients as those of the uncorrected model but the lower t-ratios. These results indicate that the coefficients of the uncorrected method are accurate but that their significance are somewhat overestimated. In this study. 1 concluded that the repeated measurement Problem did exist in our data, but that it did not affect the model estimation results significantly. It is recommended that such a test should become a standard procedure. If it turns out that the analysis based on the simple uncorrected method are influenced by the repeated measurement problem. it should be corrected.
Tree leaves have been used as the passive sampler to measure lipophilic PAHs in the atmosphere. This is a convenient and economical method in case of sampling at many regions including the remote places that are not supplied with electric power. But poor results can be obtained if samples are collected carelessly or PAHs concentrations are calculated on the basis of wrong natures of tree leaves. This study was performed to avoid the errors of interpretation that can be induced by these problems when tree leaves are used as a passive sampler of PAHs. Conclusions have been reached as follows: 1) The correlativity was low among the water content, the lipid content, the dry weight and the area of four kinds of tree leaves. According to this, PAHs concentrations calculated per wet weight, dry weight, lipid content and area of tree leaves differed. Therefore, same unit shoud be used to describe concentrations of the pollutants when PAHs concentrations deposited on leaves from atmosphere in the different regions are compared. It is better to decribe the unit as PAHs concentrations per dry weight of leaves for comparison with other data because almost researcher make use of this unit, and the range of fluctuation of the dry weights in several natures of tree leaves was relatively little during growing seasons. 2) Although four kinds of trees(Pinus Koraiensis, Ginkgo biloba, Evodia daniellii, Kalopanax pictus) had been grown at the same place, PAHs concentrtions deposited on leaves differed respectively. Therefore PAHs concentrations deposited on different kinds of tree leaves should not be compared. It is better to make use of pine needles as the sample because pine trees grow almost over the world, and it is able to collect their samples in winter.

Rapid cost-effective methods of measuring wood quality are extremely important to tree improvement programs where it is necessary to test large numbers of trees. Non-destructive sampling of a forest can be achieved by using increment cores generally removed at breast height. At CSIRO Forestry and Forest Products methods for the rapid, non-destructive measurement of wood properties and wood chemistry based on increment core samples have been developed. In this paper the application of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to the prediction of a range solid wood properties, including density, longitudinal modulus of elasticity (E$\sub$L/) and microfibril angle (MFA), is described. Experiments conducted on individual species (Eucalyptus delegatensis and Pinus radiata), the two species combined and a number of mixed species from several genera are reported. NIR spectra were obtained from the radial/longitudinal face of each sample and used to develop calibrations for the measured physical properties. When the individual species were used the relationships between laboratory determined data and NIR fitted data were good in all cases. Coefficients of determination (R$^2$) ranging from 0.77 for MFA to 0.93 for stick density were obtained for E. delegatensis and R$^2$ ranging from 0.68 for MFA to 0.94 for strip density were obtained for P. radiata. The calibration statistics for the combined E. delegatensis and P. radiata samples were similar to those found for the individual species. As these results indicated that it might be possible to produce general calibrations based on samples from a number of species of a single genus or samples from a number of different genera, a wide range of species was subsequently tested. Good relationships were obtained for both density and E$\sub$L/. These calibrations had R$^2$ that were slightly lower than those determined using individual species and standard errors that were higher. The mixed species calibrations, when applied to the E. delegatensis and P. radiata sample sets, provided good estimates of density (stick and strip) and E$\sub$L/. The results demonstrated that a mixed species calibration, that encompasses wide variation in terms of, wood anatomy, chemistry and physical properties, could be used to rank trees. Experiments reported in this paper demonstrate that solid wood properties can be estimated by NIR spectroscopy. The method offers a rapid and non-destructive alternative to traditional methods of analysis and is applicable to large-scale non-destructive forest resource assessment, and to tree breeding and silvicultural programs.
