  • Hypertension is among the most common and important risk factors for stroke, heart attack, and heart failure which is considered to be the leading cause of death in Korea. The prevalence rate of hypertension in Korea is 27.9%, according to the 2006 Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey. Since non-pharmacologic nutrition education is recommended as the first step in the management of hypertension, evaluation of nutrition program is needed to form strategies for improving patients' dietary adherence. This study was designed to evaluate the overall effectiveness of a hypertension nutrition education program (HNEP) for reducing the salt intake, at a public health center located in Gyunggi-province. The HNEP was offered for 16 weeks from May to September in 2007. Nutrition education activities included cooking classes, food preparation demonstrations, physical fitness programs, salty taste preference test sessions, games, case-study presentations, planning and evaluation of menus, etc. Forty patients participated fully in the program which had 47 female enrollees. Data about nutrient intake (24-hour recall), nutrition knowledge, food behavior were collected before (baseline) and after the program. Changes after program completion indicated the following: 1) diastolic blood pressure was decreased (p < 0.05), 2) sodium (salt) intake was also decreased (p < 0.01), especially baseline high salt intake group, 3) nutrition knowledge was improved (p<0.001), 4) dietary behaviors for maintaining a low salt diet was improved (p < 0.001), 5) participants preferred cooking class from nutrition education methods. As a conclusion, it appears that a nutrition education program for hypertensive female elderly for reducing the salt intake might effectively decrease blood pressure and salt intake. It also improves nutrition knowledge, dietary behavior, and finally adherence to a recommendable low-sodium diet.

  • The deterioration environments caused by de-icing salt and airborne chlorides in the seashore, evaluated in the "Detailed guideline for safety and management practice of facilities (performance evaluation)", were reviewed in terms of penetrated chlorides into concrete on various road facilities. Target concrete structures, in this study, were 4 concrete barriers in Gangwon area, 3 concrete barriers and 1 retaining wall in Busan area, and 4 bridges in Gangwon-do, Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Busan. The deterioration environments were classified into three categories: direct and indirect de-icing salt attack, and airborne salt attack depending on the distance to seashore and the height of pier, and the penetrated chlorides in to concrete were analyzed. The results showed that (1) the regional deterioration environments were clearly classified by de-icing salt sprayed days (snowfall days), (2) the penetrated chlorides increased significantly when leakage occurred through slabs or expansion joints, and (3) the airborne chlorides affected to a height of 20 m concrete in the seashore, Busan. From these, it could be confirmed that the chloride ion penetration properties depend on the exposed aging environment, member location and height, and deterioration status, even on the same structure, so the selection of target members and location is very important in the inspection and maintenance. If the database of penetrated chlorides properties in various deterioration environments is constructed, it is expected that the proactive durability management on concrete structures will be possible in the field.

  • The factors influencing concrete deterioration in marine environment can be generally divided into the physical and chemical action. The physical attack due to drying and wetting would increase the internal stress of concrete. The chemical attack resulting from the diffusion of ions$(i,e,\;Cl^-,SO_4^{2-},Mg^+)$ from seawater through the pores in concrete. The objective of this study is to evaluate corrosion characteristics of steel when using the various concrete materials under marine exposure environment. After 3 years of exposure, concrete specimen incorporating $40\%$ blast-furnace slag as replacement for type I cement with low w/c ratio of 0.42 and using the inhibitor shows excellent performance.

  • We present a secure and robust image watermarking scheme that uses combined reversible DWT-DCT-SVD transformations to increase integrity, authentication, and confidentiality. The proposed scheme uses two different kinds of watermarking images: a reversible watermark, $W_1$, which is used for verification (ensuring integrity and authentication aspects); and a second one, $W_2$, which is defined by a logo image that provides confidentiality. Our proposed scheme is shown to be robust, while its performances are evaluated with respect to the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), normalized cross-correlation (NCC), and running time. The robustness of the scheme is also evaluated against different attacks, including a compression attack and Salt & Pepper attack.

  • In the proposed paper, a new algorithm based on Nonlinear Feedback Shift Register (NLFSR) and modified RC4A (Rivest Cipher 4A) cipher is introduced. NLFSR is used for image pixel scrambling while modified RC4A algorithm is used for pixel substitution. NLFSR used in this algorithm is of order 27 with maximum period 227-1 which was found using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), a searching method. Modified RC4A algorithm is the modification of RC4A and is modified by introducing non-linear rotation operator in the Key Scheduling Algorithm (KSA) of RC4A cipher. Analysis of occlusion attack (up to 62.5% pixels), noise (salt and pepper, Poisson) attack and key sensitivity are performed to assess the concreteness of the proposed method. Also, some statistical and security analyses are evaluated on various images of different size to empirically assess the robustness of the proposed scheme.

  • The TPM is a hardware chip for making a trusted environment on computing system. We previously need a command authorization process to use principal TPM commands. The command authorization is used to verify an user who knows a usage secret to TPM chip. Since the user uses a simple password to compute usage secret, an attacker can retrieve the password by evasdropping messages between user and TPM chip and applying off-line dictionary attack. In this paper, we simulate the off-line dictionary attack in real PC environment adopted a TPM chip and propose a novel countermeasure to defeat this attack. Our proposed method is very efficient due to its simplicity and adaptability without any modification of TPM command structures.

  • PURPOSES: The scaling of a concrete surface caused by the combined effects of frost and de-icing salts is one of the main reasons for the need to repair transportation infrastructures in cold-climate regions. This study describes the results of attempts to determine the scaling resistance of concrete incorporating mineral admixtures such as fly ash, GGBFS, and silica fume, and subjected to the actions of frost and salt. METHODS : Conventionally, to evaluate the fundamental properties of concrete, flexural and compressive strength measurements are regularly performed. Based on the ASTM C 672 standard, concrete is subjected to 2%, 4%, and 8% $CaCl_2$ salt solutions along with repeated sets of 50 freeze/thaw cycles, and the scaling resistance was evaluated based on the mass of the scale and a visual examination. RESULTS : It was observed that silica fume is very effective in enhancing the scaling resistance of concrete. Meanwhile, concrete incorporating GGBFS exhibited poor resistance to scaling, especially in the first ten freeze/thaw cycles. However, fly ash concrete generally exhibited the maximum amount of damage as a result of the frost-salt attack, regardless of the concentrations of the solutions. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that the scaling resistance of concrete is highly dependent on the type of the mineral admixture used in the concrete. Therefore, to provide a durable concrete pavement for use in cold-climate regions, the selection of a suitable binder is essential.

  • Major deterioration in concrete structures are salt attack and carbonation. Especially severe problems due to carbonation occur in tile concrete structures of city, tunnel, underground structures. Cracks in concrete during service life including early age due to hydration heat and/or shrinkage accelerate the diffusion of concrete so that the deterioration is also accelerated. In this study, carbonation depths of both non-cracked concrete and cracked concrete are evaluated and weight change test and TGA are carried out. Through the tests, a relation between water-cement ratio and carbonation depth is derived and also carbonation increase rate is derived in the function of crack width.

  • There are many literatures reporting that the service life of re-bars in concrete structures is reduced in the oceanic environment due to chloride attack. To solve this problem, this study used geo-polymer as a mix material for concrete to increase its resistance to salt damage, and the external voltage method, one of the electric methods, is was applied to evaluate the likelihood of re-bars in the oceanic structure being exposed to the extreme salt environment. The items evaluated include the natural potential of re-bars and the corrosion rate. The results of the tests showed that in all of the salt environmental conditions (submerged zone, tidal zone, and crack), the tested materials were remarkably effective compared with ordinary concrete. The corrosion protective property was found not only in the evaluation of the natural potential but also in the evaluation of the corrosion rate, suggesting that the external voltage method can be used stably for geo-polymer RC structures in an extreme salt environment.
