To estimate the behavior of reinforced and unreinforced embankment constructed on a impermeable foundation ground, a laboratory model test was performed for two types of soils and water level increasing velocity of a flood period. The experiment models were constructed with slopes of water level is 1.25cm/min, 2.5cm/min each. From model test results, as the slope of reinforced and unreinforced embankment was the slower, the more seepage line rised. In the unreinforced embankment, the rising velocity of water level was the faster, the larger the embankment failure was. And the reinforced embankment with geotextile was the more safe than the unreinforced embankment for seepage force.
This paper investigates the development of failure surfaces induced by an embankment on soft marine clay deposits and the characteristics of such surfaces through numerical simulations and its comparative study with monitoring results. It is well known that the factor of safety of embankment slopes is closely related to the vertical loading, including the height of the embankment. That is, an increase in the embankment height reduces the factor of safety. However, few studies have examined the relationship between the lateral movement of soft soil beneath the embankment and the factor of safety. In addition, no study has investigated the distribution of the pore pressure coefficient B value along the failure surface. This paper conducts a continuum analysis using finite difference methods to characterize the development of failure surfaces during embankment construction on soft marine clay deposits. The results of the continuum analysis for failure surfaces, stress, displacement, and the factor of safety can be used for the management of embankment construction. In failure mechanism, it has been validated that a large shear displacement causes change of stress and pore pressure along the failure surface. In addition, the pore pressure coefficient B value decreases along the failure surface as the embankment height increases. This means that the rate of change in stress is higher than that in pore pressure.

Compaction is a process of increasing soil density using physical energy. It is intended to improve the strength and stiffness of soil. In embankment, degree of compaction affects the construction time, money, also method of soil improvement. In large scale embankment project, difficulties of embankment should change due to uncertainty of settlement. So it is very important to predict the final settlement and factor of safety induced by embankment. In many construction site, there are primarily design of high embankment using in-situ soil. Therefore numerical analyses are necessary for valid evaluation of the settlement prediction. But due to the construction cost and schedule, there were lacking in properties of soil and also limited number of in-situ test were performed. So we proposed the method that can easily estimate the proper soil parameters and suggest the proper method of numerical analysis. From this, two-dimensional finite-difference numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the settlement and factor of safety induced by embankment with various case of compaction rate and embankment height.
The stability of an embankment Impounding a water reservoir is highly depend upon the location of seepage line with the embankment. To evaluate the accurate safety factor of an embankment, it is important to illustrate the seepage phenomenon. Of particular interest is the stability following a rapid change (drawdown) of reservoir level Seepage forces in embankments are easily determined if frictional forces are expressed in relation to hydraulic gradient Ⅰ. If a piezometer is inserted into a body of embankment, the level to which free water rises is a measure of the energy at that point. From model test result, it is possible to calculate safety factors of earth embankment. To assure the validity of this research, tests were conducted with numerical experimental models. And the experiment models were constructed with slopes of 1:1.0, 1:1.5, 1:2.0, 1:2.5. Analysis of experimental results, seepage force was analyzed according to downstream time, internal friction angle and cohesion, respectively.
This study analyzes the change of stability of embankment due to the construction of embankment combined used road with two different construction phases. The stabilities have been checked both in the phase of earth banking for a road construction and in the phase of the application of the traffic roads(DB-24). In both cases the factor of safety has been found higher than 1.3 which is the general criterion of the safety of an embankment. The results indicate that the safety of an embankment due to the construction of embankment combined use road is assured, and thus, it is thought that the construction of embankment combined use road can be considered for cutting down on expenses of construction sites for a road construction. However, the pre-examination of stability due to the construction should be carried out because it decreases the factor of safety of an embankment. From this study, it has been found that the factor of safety was dropped most when the water level rose in the transient flow. The result indicates that the stability analysis of a river embankment where the water level changes frequently should be carried out in the condition of transient flow. It is recommended that the inner side of an embankment should have a slope of 1:2 which is identical with the slope of the existing embankment. In addition, the factor of safety also can be decreased due to the traffic loads, and therefore, the effect should also be considered after the construction of embankment combined used road limiting the traffic loads.
Effects on the stiffness of the embankment and sandmat on the construction safety of road embankment was investigated in this study by the numerical experiments using FEM. Two points was mainly focused in this study especially. First the deformation characteristics by the change of the stiffness of sand mat and embankment was investigated by the analyzing the consolidation settlement at the center of the embankment and the lateral displacement at the toe of the embankment. And, the effect of the stiffness on the stress distribution characteristics was also investigated in this study. Furthermore, slope stability analysis was carried out to gain the safe factor by change the stiffness of the sandmat and the embankment. The objective of the study is supplying the result of the numerical experiments for the geotechnical engineers who use the FEM for the safety design of the soil structures. As a result, the stiffness of the superstructures greatly affects on the deformation characteristics both in consolidation settlement and lateral displacement. However, it can be aware that it is not dominants to the stress distribution in the aspect that the no changes in the residual excess pore water pressure. Therefore, the decision of the stiffness has to be carried out deliberately considering not only the consolidation the magnitude of the settlement and the lateral displacement, but the slope stability.

Train speed and infiltration of rainfall causes railway embankment to be unstable and may result in failure. Therefore, the variation in the safety factor of railway embankment should be analyzed as the function of rainfall intensity, rainfall duration, and train speed and the study is accomplished using numerical analysis program. Based on unsaturated soil engineering, the variables in the shear strength function and permeability function are also defined and used for the numerical model for evaluation of railway embankments under rainfall. As a result of the study, in order to secure the safety of train under rainfall, the variation in the safety factor of railway embankment is predicted as the function of rainfall intensity, duration time and the train load as a function of train speed. It is possible to ensure the safety of train under rainfall. Thereafter, the feasibility of the rail-transport operation control with engineering basis was established.

The use of geotextile as reinforced materials in Soil structures has become widespread throughout the world. Geotextile reinforcement has been used in retaining walls, slope of embankment and especially soft foundation, etc. In the past, however, its design and construction have been performed empirically. In this study, to investigate of the effect of geotextiles reinforced slope of the embankment on a very soft foundation, a limit equilibrium analysis program calculating the safety factor of embankment on very soft foundation was developed. The study was focussed on such factors as type of geotextile, tensile strength, amount of reinforcement, and inclination of embankment. And the 4imit equilibrium analysis program was written on the basis of Low's slope stability theory with some modification. The following conclusions were drawn from this study. (1) The orientation of reinforcement can be assumed either horizontal or tangential to the slip circle. The factor of safety with tangential reinforcement is larger than that with the horizontal reinforcement. (2) In general, the factor of safety increases, as the slope reduces. However, it is preferable to use geotextiles with higher tensile strength rather than to reduce the slope of the embankment, because it is difficult to adjust the slope as desired. (3) The factor of safety obtained by numerical computation is affected only by the tensile strength, but not by the type of the geotextile.
This study was carried out to investigate safety evaluation of agricultural reservoirs due to raising the embankment. The seepage analysis and large-scale model test were performed to compare and analyze the pore water pressure(PWP), leakage quantity, settlement and piping phenomenon in the inclined core type and the vertical core type embankments. The PWP after raising the embankment showed smaller than before raising the embankment and the stability for piping after raising the embankment. The allowable seepage quantity and the allowable leakage for the steady state and transient conditions is within the range of safe management standard. After raising the embankment in the inclined core, there was no infiltration by leakage. For the vertical core, the PWP showed a large change by faster infiltration of pore water than in the inclined core. In a rapid drawdown, inclined core was remained stable but the vertical core showed a large change in PWP. Settlement after raising the embankment showed larger amounts of settlement than before raising the embankment. The leakage quantity before raising the embankment and the inclined core type showed no leakage. From the result, an instrument system that can accurately estimate a change of PWP shall be established for the rational maintenance and stabilization of raising the embankment for agricultural reservoirs.
The paper decribes a procedure for the evaluation of the effect of seepage force on stability of slopes. The stability of an embankment impounding a water reservoir is highly depend upon the location of seepage line with the embankment. To evaluate the accurate safety factor of an embankment, it is important to illustrate the seepage phenomenon. Of particular interest is the stability following a rapid change of reservoir level. Seepage forces in embankments are easily determined interest is the stability following a rapid change of resrvoir level. Seepage forces in embankments are easily detemined if frictional forces are expressed in relation to hydraulic gradient I. If a piezometer is inserted into a body of embankment, the level to which fee water rises is a measure of the energy at that point.
