  • The purpose of this study was to find out more effective schemes on safe water supply in rural area. Then, this study was carried out to investigate drinking water qualities of 20 simple piped water supply systems and 20 water pumps in Chun Sung County, Kang Won Province from 12th December to 24th December, 1983 and was compared this results with the previous results that had been carried out at the same sample sites from 1st July to 30th August, 1981. 1. This results of water quality in winter are better than the previous results in summer because this results are identified as safe 20%, unsafe 35% in simple piped water supply systems, safe 50%, unsafe 20% in water pumps and the previous results are identified as safe 1.8%, unsafe 78.6% in simple piped water supply systems, safe 5.5%, unsafe 73.6% in water pumps. 2. Water qualities of water pumps are better than that of simple piped water supply systems because the former is identified as safe 50%, unsafe 20% and the latter is identified as safe 20%, unsafe 35%. 3. Drinking waters that are in need of chlorination in winter as well as summer are 45% of simple piped water supply systems and 30% of water pumps.

  • It is necessary to implement the management plan for the production of safe and high quality drinking water from lake Paldang. To set up the plan, the water quality items such as BOD, T-P, SS and coliform were monitored for ten years, 1997~2006, and the influence of raw water quality on the drinking water treatment process and the treated water quality was also evaluated from 2004 to 2006. In conclusion, water quality items such as turbidity(SS), T-P(eutrophication), pathogens(fecal coliforms, enterovirus, reovirus, giardia, cryptosporidium), DOC(precursor of disinfection by-products), and micro-pollutants(phthalates, VOCs, heavy metals) are should be managed to get safe and high quality drinking water from lake Paldang.

  • A study was carried out to find drinking water qualities of 56 simple piped water supply systems and 37 water pumps in Chun Sung Conutry, Kang Won Province from 1st July to 30th August 1981. 1. The results of all kinds of water test are found to be safe at only one out of fifty six samples of simple piped water supply system at two out of thirty-seven samples of water pump and unsafe at the others. 2. In general Count of Bacteria test, twelve (21.4%) out of fifty six samples of the simple piped water are found to be safe for the legitimate standard of safty water, and five (13.5%) out of thirty=seven samples of pump water. 3. Escherichia coli group is negative at seven (12.5%) out of fifty-six samples of simple piped water, and eight (21.6%) out of thirty-seven samples of pump water. 4. The results of the physical and chemical examination of drinking water specimen are found to be safe at twelve out of fifty-six samples of simple piped water and at twenty-eight out of thirty-seven samples of pump water.

  • Although Nepal is naturally bestowed with ample water resources, not all of the population has access to safe and clean drinking water. Waste water treatment is almost nonexistent. In the recent days the flow of population in the urban areas has increased the existing challenges of providing safe water and promoting sanitation. The prevalence of water borne diseases is high. This paper presents overview of issues like water pollution, arsenic contamination of drinking water, waste water treatment and effects of water contamination on public health. Comparison between waste water treatment regulations in South Korea and Nepal has also been made. Implementation strategies to tackle the existing water related problem for promoting public health is also recommended.

  • The study has been performed to estimated the quantity of ground water recharge using the DAWAST model for water balance analysis in the Youngsan & Sumjin watersheds. The mean safe yield of ground water is annually 41.3mm, corresponding to 85 $\times$106 ㎥ at the Naju station in the Youngsan watershed, and 76.6mm corresponding to 343 $\times$ 106 ㎥ at the Songjung station in the Sumjin watershed. It is remarkable because safe yield of ground water are estimated 44 to 64 % less than the quantities estimated in the other researches.

  • The ship's maneuverability is the important factor to avoid ship's collisions. The ship's maneuverability is usually measured in a deep water, and the turning ability is decreased and the course stability is improved in a shallow water. The variation of the turning ability could cause the risk of collision. In this paper, we proposes application technique of Variable Safe-Guard Ring to consider the shallow water effect and to be simple to estimate the grade of collision risk simultaneously. Through the mathematical simulation, the availability of new method was varified. Therefore this method is expected enough to support a maneuver for collision avoidance.

  • Water conveyance from waste water treatment plant can play a role in securing river water quantitatively in urban watershed, but it can also cause more severe contamination of river water due to lack of water quality management. Soil aquifer treatment(SAT) has been introduced to overcome the worsening water quality in the water conveyance system considering the characteristics of Korean urban watershed. The application of SAT to the water conveyance system not only improve water quality of ordinarily discharged water but also prevent accidential water pollution to the urban watershed. Since most domestic urban watersheds are consist of narrow terrace lands and surrounded by roads, SAT is estimated not to be appropriate to the urban watershed with respect to the quantitative efficiency. However, since the upstream of urban watershed in which discharge ports are located usually consists of agricultural lands, SAT can be applied near discharge ports. Therefore, combination of water conveyance and SAT is expected to supply clean and safe river water in urban watershed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the condition of school water supply systems and to provide a way to supply safe and sanitary water in schools. In 1991 present, 56.9% of schools in the whole nation are provided with water supply system. And in urban schools, the percentage of small water supply system was larger than that in city. In the survey on water quality of supply water in Seoul city, the items violating the water quality standard were total bacteria, Zinc and Manganse. For supply the safe drinking water changing the old water mains and executing periodical water quality surveys are needed in addition regulations on school supply water and sanitation are also necessary to the drinking water management in schools.

  • This paper aims at investigating feasibility of social enterprise approach to water poverty, especially access to safe drinking water issue. Now. over 780 millions of people have no improved access to safe drinking water, which result in various diseases and high mortality in people of developing countries. Recently there is more growing interest on BOP business, a market approach which utilize vitality, innovativeness and profit motives of private business to tackle social problem like poverty. Many BOP businesses have been conducted in the form of social enterprise. In the paper, firstly the severe problems of no improved access to clean and safe drinking water were explained. Secondly, the potential of BOP business to address these problems was explored. Thirdly, some actual cases of social enterprises which successfully run their business were introduced. Fourthly, some business models for social enterprise to want to come into water market were discussed. Finally based on these discussions, some recommendation for Korean companies and government were also suggested.
