DNV-OS-F101 includes the concept development, design, construction, operation, and abandonment of offshore pipeline systems. The main objective of this offshore standard (OS) is to ensure that pipeline systems are safe during the installation and operational period. The pipeline design philosophy also includes public safety and environmental protection. The mechanical wall thickness design of a pipeline shall follow the design objectives and safety philosophy. This new design code includes a very sophisticated design procedure to ensure a safe pipeline, public safety, and environmental protection. This paper presents the results of a parametric study for the wall thickness design of offshore pipelines. A design matrix was developed to cover the many design factors of pipeline integrity, public safety, and environmental protection. Sensitivity analyses of the various parameters were carried out to identify the impacts on offshore pipeline design.
The proposed AI processor architecture has high throughput for accelerating the neural network and reduces the external memory bandwidth required for processing the neural network. For achieving high throughput, the proposed super thread core (STC) includes 128 × 128 nano cores operating at the clock frequency of 1.2 GHz. The function-safe architecture is proposed for a fault-tolerance system such as an electronics system for autonomous cars. The general-purpose processor (GPP) core is integrated with STC for controlling the STC and processing the AI algorithm. It has a self-recovering cache and dynamic lockstep function. The function-safe design has proved the fault performance has ASIL D of ISO26262 standard fault tolerance levels. Therefore, the entire AI processor is fabricated via the 28-nm CMOS process as a prototype chip. Its peak computing performance is 40 TFLOPS at 1.2 GHz with the supply voltage of 1.1 V. The measured energy efficiency is 1.3 TOPS/W. A GPP for control with a function-safe design can have ISO26262 ASIL-D with the single-point fault-tolerance rate of 99.64%.
This study started with the aim of creating a parenting environment for raising children as a solution to the problem of low fertility. Communal housing is a type of housing where professional childcare environment and lives of family with children can be achieved in community space. It is an environment that supports the development of the child and life of family. However, there is no guidance system for planning such an environment. Therefore, this study aims to develop a pattern language for communal housing of families with children. The research method comes in two steps. First, the documents that provided pattern language and design guidelines about the environment of child and families with children were analyzed. Second, experts specialized in child education, women and family, environmental design were interviewed. As a result of analysis of characteristics of derived pattern language, convenience, safe feeling, comfortability in residential unit, movement, safe feeling, convenience in intermediate space convenience, safe feeling, control in community space were high. The pattern language of this study grafted the items that have proven to be important over a long period of time and the environmental design concepts for families with children in the community space. So it enabled differentiation from existing pattern language or design guidelines.
Strength test using strain rosette gage have been conducted to investigate safety of an auxiliary tank in a high-pressure air compressor. Thickness of auxiliary tanks in 6063-T5 aluminum at toy are 9mm and 17mm. The result of strength test make a comparison the design in strength of materials by nominal stress and the design in fracture mechanics with consideration of crack size. Summarizing the result: Comparing with the safe working pressure of the strength test and that of the design method in strength of materials by nominal stress with the experimental values, it makes difference 11% and 39% for 9mm and 17mm thickness of auxiliary tanks, respectively, and that of the design method by fracture mechanics, it makes difference 4% and 5% for them, respectively. It is confirmed that the design by fracture mechanics is more economical and safe design than the design in strength of materials by nominal stress.
AFLS (Adaptive front lighting system) is being applied to improve safety in driving automotive at night. Safe embedded system design for controlling head-lamps is required to improve noise robust ECU hardware and software simultaneously by considering safety requirement of hardware-dependent software under severe environmental noise. In this paper, we propose an adaptive headlight controller with a newly-designed symmetric angle sensor compensator, especially based on the proposed steering-swivel angle lookup table to determine whether the current controlling target is safe. The proposed system includes an additional backup hardware to compare the system status and provides safe swivel-angle management using a controlling algorithm based on the pre-defined lookup table (LUT), which is a symmetric mapping relationship between the requested steering angle and expected swivel angle target. The implemented system model shows that the proposed architecture effectively detects abnormal situations and restores safe status of controlling the light-angle in AFLS operations under severe noisy environment.
Fatigue, the birth and growth of cracks in metal parts subjected to repeated loading, has been a problem plaguing engineers since the Industrial Revolution and the advent of rotating or reciprocating machinery. Designing against metal fatigue was studied briefly in several aspects. Examples of fatigue failures were shown. Fatigue was classified by loading: uniaxial Fatigue, multiaxial fatigue, cumulative fatigue da¬mage. Fatigue design criteria were discussed: Infinite-Life Design, Safe-Life Design, Fail-Safe Design, and Damage Tolerant Design. Mitigation of notch effects by design, improvement of fatigue strength of metal parts by residual stress and surface finishing were discussed. Relative fatigue beha¬vior was studied under various environmantal conditions. Especially the effects of corrosion, temperature, fretting, and irradiation were covered.
Fail-safe design of machine elements or structural members is very aim of the whole mankind. Fracture occurs generally from cracks that exist originally or produced from flaws. The most important job we have to do is to make stopping or decreasing the crack growth rate. For fail-safe design variable thickness plates have been used as structural members in practical engineering services. In this paper, optimum design of CT type plate with varlng thickness is studied with the theoritical analysis. The theoritical analysis was based on the stress concentration and nominal stress analysis. From the study, the optimum design curve was determined for use of designing of such structures using the computer analysis program of optimum design.
Bird collisions with glass are a substantial source of human-caused avian mortality. It has been estimated that between 100 million and 1 billion birds die in collisions with windows every year, and bird-window collisions can have a particularly serious impact on populations because glass is dangerous for strong, healthy, breeding adults. The purpose of this study are to address the bird-window collision issue and to provide suggestions for bird-safe development by reviewing precedent studies on bird collision and analyzing bird-friendly design guidelines. Typically reflections of the sky, clouds or trees on glass, green plants in lobbies, and lights attract and confuse both migrating and resident birds. Therefore birds fatally fly into the glass because they do not recognize that reflections are false and that glass is a barrier. Many cities such as Toronto, Chicago and New York have made efforts on reducing the bird collision by encouraging the creation of environmentally conscious and bird-safe buildings. The USGBC also introduced a bird-safety credit as part of its environmental certification process, called LEED. The results of the study presented that architects and builders can help reduce or prevent bird from collisions in both new construction and existing structures with creative use of design elements. The measures to reduce bird collisions include using glass with an embedded pattern, opaque or translucent films, decals, dot patterns, awnings, louvers, and grilles. Turning off lights after midnight during the spring and fall migrations can be part of the solution as well. In order to reduce bird mortality, the most important thing is to generate awareness of the issue among designers, builders, as well as the public. Also local governments need to develop bird-friendly design guidelines and planning mechanisms to encourage bird-safe development and building operation.
Pilot and flight crew visual performance in general aviation aircraft operating is paramount for safe operation of the aircraft. Pilot compartment view, instrument and cockpit lighting forms an essential aspect of this visual performance, and therefore warrants guidance and standardization. This study introduces acceptable design criteria for pilot compartment view, instrument and cockpit illumination for general aviation aircraft.
A state feedback controller and an observer have been developed and analyzed for an aircraft's safe landing in the windshear called microburst. The observer estimates the ambient wind field as well as the full-order longitudinal state vector. The controller uses the wind and state estimates for guiding the control inputs for safe landing. For the observer and controller gains, the design methodologies of linear quadratic estimation and linear quadratic regulation have been exploited. Analysis shows that some of the microburst-induced aircraft accidents in the past might have been avoided with the designed autopilot.
