  • The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) is the most widely used instrument to measure life satisfaction. This study examined the factor structure and measurement equivalence of SWLS across age and gender in Korea. A total of 936 data were analyzed, comprising 433 college students (195 males and 238 females) and 503 middle-aged adults (237 males and 266 females). The results are as follows. Firstly, the data supported a modified single-factor model with correlations between error variances of items 4 and 5. Therefore, items 4 and 5 reflecting the past were found to share a distinct meaning with other items. Secondly, SWLS showed full strict invariance by gender, but only showed partial strict invariance between college students and middle-aged adults. These results indicate that meaningful comparisons of SWLS scores across gender may be valid, but careful attention should be paid when comparing age groups.

  • Common structural rules of JBP(Joint Bulker Project) and JTP(Joint Tanker Project), which will come into effect in 2006, invoke the necessity of the ultimate limit state(ULS) design for ship structures. Even though the many applications of ULS analysis have been performed for ship structures, there have few studies carried out for deck machineries and their supporting structures. Recently four major Korean shipbuilders(DSME, HHI, HHIC, SHI) jointly developed and proposed a new design standards for mooring fittings and also proposed the SWL (Safety Working Load) obtained based on the first yield criterion. In this study, various ultimate strength analyses were performed for bollards and their foundation structures whose yield strengths were quantified by the research consortium. Prior to performing the ultimate strength analyses, the numerical calculation method was substantiated with the test results provided in the joint work report. Based upon the results of this study, it can be concluded that the reinforcements to increase the yield strength are not always resulted in the enhancement of the ultimate strength. Furthermore, the additional production costs for the reinforcements can not be rewarded by the ultimate strength. Therefore, another alternative arrangements should be developed in the view point of ultimate strength.

  • Marine bacterial strain, highly effective agar degrading, was isolated from south sea of Korea and was identified as Pseudomonas sp. This strain was named Halophilic Pseudomonas sp. W7 and accumulated an extracellular agarase which showed a high level of enzyme activity in the presence of agar and agarose. This extracellular agarase was purified by anion-exchange chromatography and gel filtration. Purified agarase showed a single protein band upon sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and its molecular weight was estimated to be about 89KDa. The agarase gene was cloned into Escherichia coli JM83 using the plasmid vector pUC19. DNA fragments(3.7, 3.0Kb) of Hind III-digested chromosomal DNA of Pseudomonas sp. W7 was inserted into the Hind III site of pUC19. Selected transformants, E. coli JM83/pSWl 000000and E. coli JM83/pSW3, produced agarase and this agarase was accumulated In the cytoplasmic space.

  • Kidney stones occur in approximately 1% of the population during their lifetime. Although the development of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) has revolutionized the theraphy of urolithiasis, the rate of recurrence of urothiasis, the rate of recurrenece of stones after SWL is about 50% within 10 years, which still represents serious problems for patienes. So to clarify the mechanism of Urocalum, and QS (Quercus salicina Blume) extract in the treatment of urolithiasis. Rat calcium oxalate urolithiasis was induced by oral administration of ethylene glycol and the vitamin D3 analog alfacalcidol for 14 days and QS extract was given to rats. After the last administration, we measured in urine, serum and renal oxidative stress marker. Ethylene glycol and alfacalcidol treatment increased BUN, creatinine, uric acid and XO. This increase was significantly suppressed by the administration of QS extract. These finding suggest that the QS extract plays a role in the prevention of stone formation and recureence in urolithiasis.

  • Mooring stability of floating dock for construction of Ichthys CPF (central processing facilities), an ultra large offshore structure, was studied. Normal and typhoon conditions were considered for mooring analysis. There have been changes in construction stages of the CPF as project progresses. These changes were reflected on the mooring stability analysis for both conditions. In order to secure the mooring stability of the floating dock for Ichthys CPF under typhoon, maximum loads of mooring chains and maximum offset of the floating dock with Ichthys CPF were examined. Also the shapes of the catenary mooring were investigated to check interferences among mooring chains. As it was confirmed that the mooring loads were within SWL (safe working load) of mooring chains and underwater sinkers, the mooring stability of the floating dock for construction of Ichthys CPF was secured. By achieving security of mooring stability of the floating dock, it is assured that Ichthys project is on its way to success.

  • The influence of age at first calving on the milk production of crossbred dairy cows produced under major dairy cattle crossbreeding projects in Pakistan was studied from the year 1974 to 1980. These animals were bred and raised at the Livestock Production Research Institute, Bahadarnagar (LPRI), Livestock Experiment Station, Karachi (LES) and the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (UAF). Local Sahiwal (SWL) cattle were crossed with the European breeds, Holstein Friesian (HF) and Jersey (J) at LPRI and UAF. At LES, native Red Sindhi (RS) were crossed with the HF and J breeds. At LES and UAF, the crossbred progeny, thus, produced comprised of halfbreds only while at LPRI 3/4 HF, 3/4 J, 1/4 HF and 1/4 J groups were also available for this study. The average age at first calving was considerably higher among the native breeds. At LES, the RS calved for the first time at an age of approximately 56 months. Corresponding values for SWLs at LPRI and UAF were 44 and 64 months, respectively. The 1/2 HF and 1/2 J crossbreds calved first at the age of approximately 25, 26, 34, 36, 37 and 38 months at LPRI, LES and UAF respectively. For 3/4 HF, 3/4 K, 1/4 HF and 1/4 J groups of LPRI the average age at first calving was 29, 26, 34 and 33 months. Considerable differences in age at first calving between the crossbreds and native breeds were observed. Due to early maturity, the former attained the peak level of milk production in third lactation whereas the latter groups, because of late maturity, reached this level in their fourth lactation. This study suggested that early maturity in Zebu cattle (Box indicus) could be induced through crossbreeding with European cattle (Bos Taurus).

  • Abstract Spirulina platensis was grown in SWlUe waste to reduce inorganic compowlds and simultaneously produce feed resources. Spirulina platensis prefers nitrogenous compounds in Ibe order: $NH_4^{+}-N>NO_3^{-}-N>simple-N$ such as urea and simple amino acids. It even consumes $NH_4^{+}-N$ first when urea or nitrate are present. Therefore, the content of residual $NH_4^{+}-N$ in Spimlina platensis cultures can be determined by the relative extent of the following processes: (i) algal uptake and assimilation; (ii) ammonia stripping; and (iii) decomposition of urea to NH;-N by urease-positive bacteria. The removal rates of total nitrogen ffild total phosphorus were estimated as an indicator of the treatment effIciency. It was found that Spirulina platensis was able to reduce 70-93% of $P_4^{3-}-P$, 67-93% of inorganic nitrogen, 80-90% of COD, and 37-56% of organic nitrogen in various concentrations of swine waste over 12 days of batch cultivation. The removal of inorganic compounds from swine waste was mainly used for cell growth, however, the organic nitrogen removal was not related to cell growlb. A maximum cell density of 1.52 dry-g/l was maintained with a dilution rate of 0.2l/day in continuous cultivation by adding 30% swine waste. The nitrogen and phosphorus removal rates were correlated to the dilution rates. Based on the amino acid profile, the quality of the proteins in the Spirulina platensis grown in the waste was the same as that in a clean culture.ulture.

  • In this study, the optimal slit length of perforated wall with single chamber below the still water level (SWL) is studied through the two dimensional test. The relationship between the reflection coefficient and the shape of structures such as chamber width(B) and slit length(S) are investigated by applying the various wave conditions. The random waves were used for the test by using Bretschneider-Mitsuyasu frequency spectrum. Minimum reflection coefficient is obtained at $B/L_s{\approx}0.15$ condition, this result is different from the regular wave condition. Also the minimum reflection coefficients are measured at $S/H_s{\approx}2.5$. This means that the optimal slit length below the still water level is 2.5 times of the incident wave height.

  • Microorganisms capable of producing biosurfactant were isolated from oil-contaminated soils and seawater. Among them, the selected strain SW1 was identified as Pseudomonas sp. by taxonomical characteristic tests, and so tentatively named Pseudomonas sp. SWI. The optimal temperature and initial pH for biosurfactant production were TEX>30^{\circ}C.$ and 7.0, respectively. The optimal medium composilion for the production of biosurfactant by Pseudomonas sp. SW1 were hexadecane of 2.0%, yeast extract of 0.04%, $K_{2}HPO_4$ of 0.02%, $KH_2PO_4$ of 0.03% and $MgSO_4$ center dot $7H_2O$ of 0.04%, respectively. Under the above conditions, minimum wrface tension was 32 mN/m after incubation of 2 days. The biosurfactant was produced during initial stationary phase in the optimal medium. Pseudotnonas sp. SWl utilized various hydrocarbons such as Bunker oils, n-alkanes and branched alkanes as a sole carbon source.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to verify the impact of Habitat for Humanity Korea's disaster risk reduction intervention on the mental health and satisfaction with life among residents of southern Bangladesh who had constantly suffered from disaster stress due to perennial flooding. Method: The target group was 138 residents who were pre-surveyed in August 2020 and post-surveyed in November 2021. The interventions consisted of individual incremental housing, public facilities for evacuation, and disaster response training for capacity development. The data were analysed using paired sample t-tests for pre-post changes and one-way analysis of variance to identify differences between treatment groups. Result: The results showed significant improvements in residents' depression, anxiety, somatisation and satisfaction with life after the intervention, with significant differences in mental health levels between the intervention treatments. Specifically, relatively higher disaster mitigation effects were found for individual infrastructure improvements and employment facilities compared to disaster response drills. Conclusion: These results demonstrate the positive role of Habitat for Humanity Korea's disaster risk reduction interventions on the mental health recovery of disaster victims and suggest practical approaches that can be applied in disaster risk areas.
