For the assessment of climate change impacts for the Byeongseong stream, CGCM 3.1 T63 is selected as future climate information. The projections come from CGCM used to simulate the GHG emission scenario known as A2. Air temperature and precipitation information from the GCM simulations are converted to regional scale data using the statistical downscaling method known as MSPG. Downscaled climate data from GCM are then used as the input data for the SWAT model to generate regional runoff and water quality estimates in the Byeongseong stream. As a result of simple sensitivity analysis, the increase of CO2 concentration leads to increase water yield through reduction of evapotranspiration and increase of soil water. Hydrologic responses to climate change are in phase with precipitation change. Climate change is expected to reduce water yields in the period of 2021-2030. In the period of 2051-2060, stream flow is expected to be reduced in spring season and increased in summer season. While soil losses are also in phase with water yields, nutrient discharges (i.e., total nitrogen) are not always in phase with precipitation change. However, it should be noted that there are a lot of uncertainties in such multiple-step analysis used to convert climate information from GCM-based future climate projections into hydrologic information.
The objectives of this study are to construct the natural streamflow in the Bokhacheon middle-upper watershed using the SWAT-K model and to assess the impacts of groundwater withdrawals, water intake, treated sewage water release on streamflow. The simulated natural streamflow from 2006 to 2013 showed the minimum discharge of $1.7m^3/s$, the annual average discharge of $26.2m^3/s$, the drought flow of $2.0m^3/s$ at the outlet of the study area. The simulated results indicated that the groundwater pumping has induced the decrease of 34% in drought flow against the natural condition and the net water release has caused the increase of 15%, while the combined effects of the groundwater pumping and the net water release have induced the decrease of 19%. It was found out from the simulated natural streamflow data that the specific discharges of the abundant flow, normal flow, low flow, drought flow in the upper-middle channels of the Bokha-cheon watershed have a tendency to increase as the drainage area increases, but the specific discharges showed almost constant values at any downstream point with drainage area more than about 180 $km^2$.
Groundwater pumping from a well has different impacts on streamflow depletion because hydraulic properties of the aquifer and the stream bed differ depending on its location. Therefore, quantitative assessment of streamflow depletion due to each groundwater pumping with different well locations is needed for the effective groundwater development and streamflow management. In this study, a watershed-based surface water and groundwater integrated model, SWAT-MODFLOW was used to assess the streamflow depletion near stream reach due to groundwater pumping from a well located within the Sinduncheon watershed. The arbitrary 50 wells among the currently used groundwater pumping wells were selected within the study area and the streamflow responses to each groundwater pumping were simulated at nearby and downstream reaches. In particular, the applicability of the Stream Depletion Factor (SDF) and Stream Bed Factor (SBF), which are widely used for evaluating the degree of streamflow depletion due to groundwater pumping, was evaluated. The simulated results demonstrated that the streamflow depletion rate divided by the pumping rate significantly differ depending on well locations and distance between well and stream, showing a wide range of values from below 20% to above 90%. From the simulated results, it was found out that the SDF or the SBF can be a partial referred value but not an absolute criterion in determining whether a pumping well has a great impact on streamflow depletion or not.
To investigate the effect of upstream dam operation and river water use on the downstream flows, SWAT-K watershed model was applied to the Paldang Dam watershed of the Han River basin. Analysis results from 2001 to 2009 showed that outflows from the multi-purpose dams such as the Soyanggang Dam and Chungju Dam much have a strong influence on the downstream flows during both the low- and high-flow seasons. This resulted an increase of low-flow at the Paldang Dam, the end of Pukhangang, and the Yangpyeong stage station by $100.57m^3/s$, $33.01m^3/s$, and $49.66m^3/s$, respectively. Whereas, the impact of river water use was hardly found in the Pukhangang, and also was not significant in the (Nam)hangang. Therefore, the effect of small dam such as the Hoengseong Dam or river water use would be able be excluded for long-term runoff analysis. But, in the case of the areas with a large amount of water use, a sufficient information such water-intake and water movement also must be taken into account like this study.

In this study, water supply for Geum River Basin was calculated by regulating the future water supply of Dam with the future expected discharges. HadGEM2-AO, which is the climate change prediction model that KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) recently introduced was used for this study. The data of weather stations within the Geum River basin was extracted with the new Greenhouse Gas RCP scenario. The runoff of Geum river basin was simulated using the ArcSWAT for the 1988~2010 period. After validating the model, the similarity of results between simulation and observation at the Yongdam Dam and Daecheong Dam was 92.25% and 95.40%, respectively, which shows a good agreement with observed data. As the result of analysis for the discharges, the discharges would increase 47.76% under the RCP4.5 scenario and 36.52% under the RCP8.5 scenario. Water balance analysis was conducted by the KModSim for predicting the water supply under the runoff variation. We analyzed the volume of water intake with national standard of water supply 95% by Dam Operation Manual. By the analysis under RCP4.5 scenario, $9.41m^3/s$, $24.82m^3/s$ of additional water supply is available on Yongdam Dam and Daecheong Dam. By the analysis under the RCP8.5 scenario, $6.48m^3/s$, $21.08m^3/s$ of additional water supply is available on Yongdam Dam and Daecheong Dam.
Groundwater flow in a basin is greatly affected by many hydrogeological and hydrological characteristics of the basin. A groundwater flow model for the Kap-cheon basin ($area=648.3km^2$) in the Geum river basin was established using MODFLOW by fully considering major features obtained from observed data of 438 wells and 24 streams. Furthermore, spatial groundwater recharge distribution was estimated employing accurately calibrated watershed model developed using SWAT, a physically semi-distributed hydrological model. Model calibration using observed groundwater head data at 86 observation wells yielded the deterministic coefficient of 0.99 and the water budget discrepancy of 0.57%, indicating that the model well represented the regional groundwater flow in the Kap-cheon basin. Model simulation results showed that groundwater flow in the basin was strongly influenced by such factors as topological features, aquifer characteristics and streams. The streams in mountainous areas were found to alternate gaining and losing steams, while the streams in the vicinity of the mid-stream and down-stream, especially near the junction of Kap-cheon and Yudeong-cheon, areas were mostly appeared as gaining streams. Analysis of water budget showed that streams in mountainous areas except for the mid-stream and up-stream of Yudeong-cheon were mostly fed by groundwater recharge while the streams in the mid and down-stream areas were supplied from groundwater inflows from adjacent sub-basins. Hence, it was concluded that the interactions between surface water-groundwater in the Kap-cheon basin would be strongly inter-connected with not only streams but also groundwater flow system itself.
This study investigates differences in hydrological responses to the climatic scenarios resulting from the use of different three hydrological models, PRMS, SLURP, and SWAT. First, the capability of the three models in simulating the present climate water balance components is evaluated at Andong-dam watershed. And then, the results of the models in simulating the impact using hypothetical climate change scenarios are analyzed and compared. The results show that three models have similar capabilities in simulating observed data. However, greater differences in the model results occur when the models are used to simulate the hydrological impact under hypothetical climate change. According as temperature change grows, the differences between model results is increasing because of differences of the evapotranspiration estimation methods. The results suggest that technique that consider the uncertainty by using different hydrological models will be needed when climate change impact assessment on water resources.
