In the manufacture of liquid crystal display devices, there is a strong demand for contactless glass panel handling devices that can manipulate a glass panel without contaminating or damaging it. To fulfill this requirement, an electrostatic transportation device for glass panels is proposed. This device can directly drive a glass panel and simultaneously provide contactless suspension by electrostatic forces. To accomplish these two functions, a feedback control strategy and the operational principle of an electrostatic induction motor are utilized. The stator possesses electrodes which exert electrostatic farces on the glass panel and are divided into a part responsible for suspension and one for transportation. To accomplish dynamic stability and a relatively fast suspension initiation time, the structure of the electrode for suspension possesses many boundaries over which potential differences are formed. In this paper, an electrode pattern suitable for the suspension of glass panels is described, followed by the structure of the transportation device and its operational principle. Experimental results show that the glass panel has been transported with a speed of approximately 25.6 mm/s while being suspended stably at a gap length of 0.3 mm.

As track density needs to increase to the order of 10, 000 tpi, the suspension has become a critical component in hard disk drives. One of the main obstacles to attain high track density is the structural resonances of the suspension in lateral direction. We investigate the suspension dynamics through the experimental modal analysis and the finite element method. An LDV (Laser Doppler Vibrometer) is employed to measure the response of the suspension which is excited by a shaker and an inpulse hammer for the free condition and the loaded condition, respectively. After comparing the experimental and numerical results, we study how the initial geometry of the bend region affects the suspension dynamics. It is found that the natural frequency of the sway mode decreases as the bend ratio and the bend angle increase. The shape of torsional mode changes as the mass of a slider increases, resulting in a local decrease in the natural frequency.
Planetary exploration rovers are likely to make a trip on a winding and sloping road of irregular surfaces to the destination in order to accomplish scientific missions. One of the key technologies for rovers is a suspension for traveling and performing exploration missions; the suspension is an essential area of technology for a stable movement of a rover. In this study, an 8-wheel suspension is designed to enable efficient climbing of slopes on a passage to the destination. For the two front wheels among the eight wheels, the moment at the pivot connecting two wheels is derived when the distance between the wheels and the torque of wheels are same. A test experiment was performed to compare the magnitude of moment according to the change in tilt angle and the position of the pivot. Finally, a suspension design considering the position of the pivot was proposed to enhance the hill-climbing performance.
Steel suspension members subjected to tension and bending offer an economical and efficient alternative for many structural problems. This paper is concerned with the elastic and elastic-plastic behaviour of suspension members with bending stiffness subjected to vertical point and uniformly distributed loads. An experimental study is described which focuses on the response of three suspension members with various T-shaped steel hot rolled sections and geometric configurations. The tests enable direct assessment of the influence of a key parameter such as the sag-to-span ratio on the response of suspension members. Detailed nonlinear finite-element models are generated to provide a tool for theoretical analyses and to facilitate further understanding of the behaviour. Results demonstrate that experimentally obtained responses can generally be closely predicted numerically because there are relatively good agreements between finite element and tests results. The results and observations of subsequent numerical parametric studies offer an insight into the key factors that govern the behaviour of suspension members with bending stiffness in the elastic-plastic range.

A suspension bridge is a type of bridge in which the beam is suspended by load-bearing cables. There are two classifications: the self-anchored suspension bridge has the main cable anchored to the bridge girders, and the earth-anchored suspension bridge has the main cable anchored to a large anchorage. Although a suspension bridge is structurally safe, it is prone to be damaged by various actions such as hurricanes, tsunamis and terrorist incidents because its cables are exposed. If damage to a cable eventually leads to the cable rupture, the bridge may collapse. To avoid these accidents, studies on the dynamic behavior of cable bridges due to the cable rupture have been carried out. Design codes specify that the calculated DAF (dynamic amplification factor) should not exceed a certain value. However, it has been difficult to determine DAFs effectively from dynamic analysis, and thus no systematic approach has been suggested. The current study provides a guideline to determine DAFs reliably from the dynamic analysis results and summarizes the results by applying the method to an earth-anchored suspension bridge. In the study, DAFs were calculated at the location of four structural parts, girders, pylons, main cable and hangers, with variations in the rupture time.
This paper experimentally reports the effect of suspension stability on the thermal conductivity of water-based Au nanofluids. For this purpose, the water-based Au nanofluids are prepared by the one-step method called electro-chemical method with volume fraction of 0.0005%. The thermal conductivity of water-based Au nanofluids is measured from $22^{\circ}C$ to $42^{\circ}C$ using the transient hot wire method. To quantify the suspension stability of Au nanofluids, the suspension stability of nanofluids is evaluated using the in-house developed laser scattering system at a fixed wavelength of 632.8nm with the elapsed time. Based on the experimental results, the both thermal conductivity and suspension stability of water-based Au nanofluids are gradually decreased according to the time. These results experimentally show that the suspension stability of water-based Au nanofluids is the one of the important factor of thermal conductivity.

Optimal design parameters are estimated from the sensitivity function and performance index variation. Suspension design modification for performance improvement and basic materials for practical applications are presented. The linear quarter model of a vehicle suspension is analyzed in order to represent the utilities of sensitivity analysis, and sensitivity function is determined in the frequency domain. The change of frequency response function is predicted, which depends on the design parameter variation and the property is verified by computer simulation. As an investigation results of sensitivity function for the vibrational amplitude of sprung mass to road profile input, it is shown that the most sensitive parameters are the suspension damping and the suspension stiffness. In order to identify the effects of these two parameters to the performance of suspension system, the performance index variation according to the changes of parameters is considered and then optimal design parameters are determined. It is verified that the system response is improved noticeably in the both of frequency and time domain after the design modification with the optimal parameters.

In this paper, a new estimation method is proposed to calculate steering rack axial force using a 3 dimensional tire mesh model when a car is standing on the road. This model is established by considering changes of camber angle and contact patch between the tires and the ground according to steering angle. The steering rack bar axial force is estimated based on the static equilibrium equations of forces and moments. A tire friction force is supposed to act on the center point of the contact patch, and the proportional coefficient of friction depending on contact patch is suggested. Using the proposed estimation method, rack axial force sensitivity analysis is evaluated according to changes of suspension geometry. Then optimal motor power of Motor Driven Power Steering(MDPS) is evaluated using suggested rack forces.

The maximum speed is one of the most important performance in high speed railway vehicle. The higher the train speed is, the worse the ride comfort is, In order to solve this problem, a semi-active or active suspension can be applied to high speed railway vehicle. The variable damper with hydraulic solenoid valve is used in the semi-active suspension. But the variable damper with hydraulic solenoid valve requires tank for supplying fluid. The MR(Magneto Rheological) damper can be considered instead of hydraulic variable damper which needs additional device, i.e. reserver tank for fluid. In the case of active suspension, hydraulic actuator or electro-mechanical one is used to suppress the carbody vibration in railway vehicle. In this study the MR damper and electro-mechanical actuator was considered in secondary suspension system of high speed railway vehicle. The dynamic analysis was performed by using 10-DOF dynamic equations of railway vehicle. The performance of the semi-active suspension and active suspension system were reviewed by using MATLAB/Simulink S/W. The vibration suppression effect of semi-active and active suspension system were investigated experimentally by using 1/5-scaled railway vehicle model.

Since cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) has large specific surface area and high water holding capacity, it is very difficult task to remove water from the CNF suspension. However, dewatering of CNF suspension is a prerequisite of following processes such as mat forming and drying for the application of CNF. In this study, we evaluated the drainage of cellulose fibers suspension under vacuum and pressure conditions depending on the number of grinding passes. Also, the effect of the addition of cationic polyelectrolyte on dewatering ability of CNF suspension was investigated. Regardless of dewatering condition, the total drained water amount as well as the drainage rate were decreased with an increase in the number of grinding passes. Pressure dewatering equipment enables us to prepare wet CNF mat with relatively higher grammage. The cationic polyelectrolytes improved the dewatering ability of CNF suspension by controlling the zeta potential of CNF. The fast drainage was obtained when CNF suspension had around neutral zeta potential.
