Velocity measurements in complex flows of non-Newtonian fluids

  • Experimental methods for making quantitative measurements of velocity fields in non-Newtonian fluids are reviewed. Techniques based on light scattering spectroscopy - laser Doppler velocimetry and homodyne light scattering spectroscopy, techniques based on imaging the displacement of markers - including particle image velocimetry and molecular tagging velocimetry, and techniques based on nuclear magnetic resonance imaging are discussed. The special advantages and disadvantages of each method are summarized, and their applications to non-Newtonian flows are briefly reviewed. Example data from each technique are also included.

모양공간 모델을 이용한 영상분할 알고리즘 (An Image Segmentation Algorithm using the Shape Space Model)

  • MPEG-4 표준에서는 객체 단위의 부호화를 수행하기 위해 자연영상으로부터 비디오 객체를 분리하는 영상분할(segmentation) 기술이 필요하다. 영상분할 방법은 크게 자동 영상분할(automatic segmentation)과 반자동 영상분할(semi-automatic segmentation)의 두 부류로 나눌 수 있다. 지금까지 개발된 대부분의 자동 영상분할 방법은 비디오 객체의 명확한 수학적인 모델을 제시하기 곤란하며 한 화면에서 개별 객체를 추출하기 어렵기 때문에 그 성능에 한계가 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 문제점을 극복하기 위해 active contour 알고리즘을 이용한 반자동 영상분할 알고리즘을 제안한다. 초기 곡선으로부터 변화 가능한 모든 곡선의 집합을 모양공간으로 정의하고 그 공간을 선형공간이라고 가정하면, 모양공간(shape space)은 모양 행렬에 의해 행(column) 공간과 남은 빈(left null) 공간으로 나뉘어진다. 본 논문에서 제안하는 알고리즘은 행공간의 모양공간 벡터를 이용하여 초기 곡선으로부터 영상의 특징점까지의 변화를 기술하고 동적 그래프 검색 알고리즘을 이용하여 객체의 세밀한 부분을 묘사한다. 모양 행렬과 객체의 윤곽을 추정하기 위한 SUSAN 연산자의 사용으로 제안한 알고리즘은 저수준 영상처리로부터 생성되는 불필요한 특징점을 무시할 수 있다. 또한, 모양 행렬의 사용으로 생긴 제약은 동적 그래프 검색 알고리즘으로 보상한다.

A New Approach in Numerical Assessment of the Cavitation Behaviour of Centrifugal Pumps

  • The paper presents a new method for the analysis of the cavitation behaviour of hydraulic turbomachines. This new method allows determining the coefficient of the cavitation inception and the cavitation sensitivity of the turbomachines. We apply this method to study the cavitation behaviour of a large storage pump. By plotting in semi-logarithmic coordinates the vapour volume versus the cavitation coefficient, we show that all numerical data collapse in an exponential manner. By analysis of the slope of the curve describing the evolution of the vapour volume against the cavitation coefficient we determine the cavitation sensitivity of the pump for each operating point.

크기와 회전변화에 강인한 Genetic Programming 기반 코너 검출자 (Scale and Rotation Robust Genetic Programming-Based Corner Detectors)

  • This paper introduces GP(Genetic Programming) based robust corner detectors for scaled and rotated images. Various empirical algorithms have been studied to improve computational speed and accuracy including approaches, such as the Harris and SUSAN, FAST corner detectors. These techniques are highly efficient for well-defined corners, but are limited to corner-like edges which are often generated in rotated images. It is very difficult to detect correctly edges which have characteristics similar to corners. In this paper, we have focused the above challenging problem and proposed Genetic Programming-based automated generation of corner detectors which is robust to scaled and rotated images. The proposed method is compared to the existing corner detectors on test images and shows superior results.

Flow-Feedback for Pressure Fluctuation Mitigation and Pressure Recovery Improvement in a Conical Diffuser with Swirl

  • Our previous experimental and numerical investigations of decelerated swirling flows in conical diffusers have demonstrated that water jet injection along the symmetry axis mitigates the pressure fluctuations associated with the precessing vortex rope. However, for swirling flows similar to Francis turbines operated at partial discharge, the jet becomes effective when the jet discharge is larger than 10% from the turbine discharge, leading to large volumetric losses when the jet is supplied from upstream the runner. As a result, we introduce the flow-feedback approach for supplying the jet by using a fraction of the discharge collected downstream the conical diffuser. Experimental investigations on mitigating the pressure fluctuations generated by the precessing vortex rope and investigations of pressure recovery coefficient on the cone wall with and without flow-feedback method are presented.

The Role of Children in Daesoon Jinrihoe, a Korean New Religion

  • This study attempts to investigate the role of children in the Korean new religious movement, Daesoon Jinrihoe. The research method combined archival studies with qualitative research; interviews with two members involved in educating youth through the establishment of Youth Camps and Donggeurami, the order's youth magazine. Our four research questions were: 1. Do children play a central role in the millennial vision of this NRM? 2. Are children separated from the world? 3. Have Daesoon childrearing methods been challenged by secular authorities or anticult groups? 4. Are there procedures to educate children in the religious beliefs and values of their parents and the community? Our results found that Daesoon Jinrihoe appears to be a religion designed for adults. Children do not usually participate in religious activities. On the other hand, since 2005 there has been a strategic effort to educate the children in the faith of their parents, through the establishment of Youth Camps and the youth magazine, Donggeurami.

  • 루이스 캐럴의 "이상한 나라의 앨리스의 모험"은 즐거움 중심의 서사로서 아동문학의 지평을 넓혔을 뿐만 아니라 언어놀이를 통하여 제임스 조이스의 포스트/모더니즘을 예견했다. 본고는 "이상한 나라의 앨리스의 모험"을 분석하며 수전 손택의 "침상의 앨리스"의 앨리스 제임스 캐릭터와 캐럴의 앨리스 캐릭터를 "정체/움직임"의 시각에서 비교한다. 또한 앨리스가 창조적 에너지로서의 "호기심"으로 촉발된 모험 속에서 수치심과 부끄러움이라는 감정을 뛰어 넘어 해체된 정체성을 재구성하는 능동적 주체로 성장한다고 주장한다. 이 과정에서 호명과 스토리텔링이라는 언어의 수행적 힘의 중요성이 강조된다. 꿈 이야기를 하는 이야기꾼 앨리스는 스토리텔링의 힘으로 언니 또한 꿈꾸게 한다. 꿈이 프로이트가 이론화하듯 욕망이 실현되는 무의식의 공간이라면 캐럴은 모험의 꿈 이야기를 재현하며 아동이며 여성으로 소외된 두 자매의 욕망을 통해 시대의 가치를 전복한다. 캐럴의 앨리스는 보수적 여성성과 닫힌 체재 내의 영웅여성상을 거부하며 무의미의 놀이와 모험으로 끊임없이 변화하는 가운데 스스로와 체재를 창조하는 캐릭터이다. 언어의 놀이와 무의미의 카오스 속에서 새로운 의미인 카오스모스를 생성하는 힘은 역설적으로 창조적 언어의 힘이다.

In situ analysis of capturing dynamics of magnetic nanoparticles in a microfluidic system

  • Magnetic nanoparticle based bioseparation in microfluidics is a multiphysics phenomenon that involves interplay of various parameters. The ability to understand the dynamics of these parameters is a prerequisite for designing and developing more efficient magnetic cell/bio-particle separation systems. Therefore, in this work proof-of-concept experiments are combined with advanced numerical simulation to design and optimize the capturing process of magnetic nanoparticles responsible for efficient microfluidic bioseparation. A low cost generic microfluidic platform was developed using a novel micromolding method that can be done without a clean room techniques and at much lower cost and time. Parametric analysis using both experiments and theoretical predictions were performed. It was found that flow rate and magnetic field strength greatly influence the transport of magnetic nanoparticles in the microchannel and control the capturing efficiency. The results from mathematical model agree very well with experiments. The model further demonstrated that a 12% increase in capturing efficiency can be achieved by introducing of iron-grooved bar in the microfluidic setup that resulted in increase in magnetic field gradient. The numerical simulations were helpful in testing and optimizing key design parameters. Overall, this work demonstrated that a simple low cost experimental proof-of-concept setup can be synchronized with advanced numerical simulation not only to enhance the functional performance of magneto-fluidic capturing systems but also to efficiently design and develop microfluidic bioseparation systems for biomedical applications.

Residents' Preference for Spatial Features in Sitting Areas at Assisted Living Facilities - Focused on direct or indirect social interaction for older adults -

  • This study investigated residents' preferences for spatial features of sitting areas in assisted living facilities, and provides recommendations for planning sitting areas to support residents' spatial preferences and social interaction. The study participants were 69 residents of eight assisted living facilities (30+ resident capacity), located in south central Texas. A photographic comparison method was used, in which residents were shown 20 matched pairs of photos, with a single feature digitally modified in each pair, and asked to select which environmental representation they preferred. The hypothesized spatial characteristics were identified in practice based literature as those that may encourage usage of sitting areas: viewability, variety, homelikeness, and privacy. Most of the hypothesized features were preferred by participants, with the highest preference found for non-institutional furniture arrangements and naturalness, followed by increasing enclosure and variety of seating. Preference was less significant for domestic cues such as carpeted floors, divided light windows, and boundaries defined by different colored material or columns, possibly due to their physical impairments or preference for visual openness. Participants' level of mobility assistance was significantly related to their preference for some features, such as seating with people-watching capability, and carpeted floors. The findings have implications for facility architects and administrators engaged in resident-oriented spatial planning.

미숙아 모유수유 프로그램이 미숙아 어머니의 스트레스, 모유수유 지식정도 및 실천에 미치는 효과 (Effects of a Breastfeeding Program for Premature Infants on Maternal Stress, Knowledge, and Breastfeeding Behaviors)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to develop a breast feeding program for mothers of premature infants. The program was applied and its effect was evaluated on stress, knowledge and breastfeeding behaviors of premature infant mothers. Method: This study employed a one group pre- and post-test quasi-experimental design. The data were collected from 17 participants from August 15 to October 24, 2004, at a N1CU at D University Medical Center located in Susan, Korea. Data were analyzed by means of frequency, SD, and t-test using SPSS version 10. Result: After the program, participants significantly showed a greater level of knowledge than before the program (t=-5.750, p=.000). No statistically significant differences in stress level scores were found (t=1.453, p=.153). The breastfeeding practice rate was 94.1%: Conclusion: This educational program using a handbook and video had a positive effect on increasing knowledge and practice of breastfeeding among premature infant mothers. It is suggested that this study be replicated with a larger sample size to compare group responses.
