Fabrication and Characterization of $TiB_2$-based Cermet Using SUS316L Metal Binder (SUS316L결합상을 이용한 $TiB_2$ 서멧합금의 제조와 특성평가)

  • For the fabrication of titanium diboride($TiB_2$)- based cermet as applications of cutting tools and wear resistant materials, a binder metal with good mechanical properties and sinterability is essential. In this study, SUS316L was chosen for the binder metal to obtain a new $TiB_2$ cermet with superior hardness and toughness.$TiB_2$-SUS316L cermets were densified to relative density of more than 99% by pressureless sintering at temperature above $1650^{\circ}C$ The flexural strength was up to 1290MPa at 10vo1%SUS316L cermet in spite of the formation of $Fe_2$B phase during the sintering. The fracture toughness was obtained up to $6MPam^{1/2}$ with Victors hardness over 18Gpa. These hardness and fracture toughness combinations are better than those of conventional cermet. The high temperature strength remarkably decreased by the plastic deformations of SUS316L binder phase at nearby $800^{\circ}C$ .

  • 3Y-TZP/SUS316 Functionally Graded Material (FGM) was fabricated by slip casting method. Alumina mold was used to overcome problems of gypsum mold in slip casting process, and the optimal dispersion con-ditions of 3Y-TZP/SUS316 binary slurries was determined using electrokinetic sonic amplitude and a viscometer, and observing sedimentation behavior. The properties of the specimens casted by gypsum mold and alumina mold were compared in terms of changes in shrinkage rate, drying and sintering conditions, and microstructure. It was found that the specimens obtaine from the alumina mold showed a clean surface, easier thickness control of each layer, and higher productivity. Especially, no degradation was observed in the SUS316 prepared using alumina mold. Thus it is desirable to use porous alumina mold rather than gyp-sum mold for the slip casting of 3Y-TZP/SUS316-FGM.

  • To measure the pressure using semiconductor type pressure sensor in water or chemical solution, the sensor must be protected from the solution using proper packaging materials. stainless steel isolated type pressure sensor packaged with SUS316 can be widely used to measure the pressure in water or chemical due to its high corrosion-resistance and good performance in tensility and welding. Even if the surface of SUS316 has a plenty of nickel and chromium, the SUS316 is highly corrosive in acidic or alkaline solution. We coated parylene and adhesion promoting copper layer are 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 200nm, respectively. The parylene coated stainless steel pressure sensor showed good anti-corosive characteristics in various strong acids. The accuracy of pressure sensor wasn't varied after parylene coating with 0.5%FSO.

  • Stainless steel was applied as bipolar plate (BP) of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) due to high mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, and good machinability. However, stainless steel was corroded and increased contact resistance resulting PEMFC performance decrease. Although the corrosion resistance could be improved by surface treatment such as noble metal coating, there is a disadvantage of cost increase. The stainless steel corrosion behavior and passive layer influence on PEMFC performance should be studied to improve durability and economics of metal bipolar plate. In this study, SUS316L bipolar plate of 25 cm2 active area was manufactured, and experiments were conducted for corrosion behavior at an anode and cathode. The influence of SUS316L BP corrosion on fuel cell performance was measured using the polarization curve, impedance, and contact resistance. The metal ion concentration in drained water was analyzed during fuel cell operation with SUS316L BP. It was confirmed that the corrosion occurs more severely at the anode than at the cathode for SUS316L BP. The contact resistance was increased due to the passivation of SUS316L during fuel cell operation, and metal ions continuously dissolved even after the passive layer formation.

  • 우수한 내부식성 합금원소인 Al, Cr을 이용하여 SUS316L의 내부식성을 증진시키고자, Sputtering, E-beam evaporation을 이용하여 SUS316L 표면에 Al, Cr 코팅층을 형성시켰다. 코팅층을 형성시킨 후 시편을 $H_2S$ 합성가스 분위기에서 부식시켜 부식거동을 살펴본 결과 코팅하지 않은 SUS316L이 가장 열악한 내부식성을 나타내어 코팅층의 형성으로 내부식성이 개선됨을 알 수 있었다.

  • Corrosion behavior of austenitic stainless steels of SUS 316L and SUS304L in molten salt of LiCl and $LiCl/Li_2O$ has been investigated in the temperature range of $650~850^{\circ}C$. Corrosion products of SUS316L and 304L in hot molten salt consisted of two layers-an outer layer of Li(CrFe)$O_2$and an inner layer of$Cr_2O_3$. The corrosion layer was uniform in molten salt of LiCl, but the intergranular corrosion occurred in addition to the uniform corrosion in mixed molten salt of LiCl/$Li_2O$. The corrosion rate increased slowly with the increase of temperature up to $750^{\circ}C$, but above $750^{\circ}C$ rapid increase in corrosion rate observed. SUS316L stainless steel showed slower corrosion rate than SUS 304L, exhibiting higher corrosion resistance in the molten salt.
