  • Satellite imagery occurs geometric and radiometric errors due to external environmental factors at the acquired time, which in turn causes false-alarm in change detection. These errors should be eliminated by geometric and radiometric corrections. In this study, we propose a methodology that automatically and simultaneously performs geometric and radiometric corrections by using the SURF (Speeded-Up Robust Feature) algorithm and the mask filter. The MPs (Matching Points), which show invariant properties between multi-temporal imagery, extracted through the SURF algorithm are used for automatic geometric correction. Using the properties of the extracted MPs, PIFs (Pseudo Invariant Features) used for relative radiometric correction are selected. Subsequently, secondary PIFs are extracted by generated mask filters around the selected PIFs. After performing automatic using the extracted MPs, we could confirm that geometric and radiometric errors are eliminated as the result of performing the relative radiometric correction using PIFs in geo-rectified images.

  • Since the amount of digital image continues to grow in usage, users feel increased difficulty in finding specific images from the image collection. This paper proposes a novel image searching scheme that extracts the image feature using combination of Advanced SURF (Speed-Up Robust Feature) and DCD (Dominant Color Descriptor). The key point of this research is to provide a new feature extraction algorithm to improve the existing SURF method with removal of unnecessary feature in image retrieval, which can be adaptable to mobile system and efficiently run on the mobile environments. To evaluate the proposed scheme, we assessed the performance of simulation in term of average precision and F-score on two databases, commonly used in the field of image retrieval. The experimental results revealed that the proposed algorithm exhibited a significant improvement of over 14.4% in retrieval effectiveness, compared to OpenSURF. The main contribution of this paper is that the proposed approach achieves high accuracy and stability by using ASURF and DCD in searching for natural image on mobile platform.

  • This paper explains the hardware structure of SURF(Speeded Up Robust Feature) based feature point extractor and its FPGA verification result. SURF algorithm produces novel scale- and rotation-invariant feature point and descriptor which can be used for object recognition, creation of panorama image, 3D Image restoration. But the feature point extraction processing takes approximately 7,200msec for VGA-resolution in embedded environment using ARM11(667Mhz) processor and 128Mbytes DDR memory, hence its real-time operation is not guaranteed. We analyzed integral image memory access pattern which is a key component of SURF algorithm to reduce memory access and memory usage to operate in c real-time. We assure feature extraction that using a Vertex-5 FPGA gives 60frame/sec of VGA image at 100Mhz.

  • SURF is an algorithm which extracts feature points and generates their descriptors from input images, and it is being used for many applications such as object recognition, tracking, and constructing panorama pictures. Although SURF is known to be robust to changes of scale, rotation, and view points, it is hard to implement it in real time due to its complex and repetitive computations. Using 3.3 GHz Pentium, in our experiment, it takes 240ms to extract feature points and create descriptors in a VGA image containing about 1,000 feature points, which means that software implementation cannot meet the real time requirement, especially in embedded systems. In this paper, we present a hardware architecture that can compute the SURF algorithm very fast while consuming minimum hardware resources. Two key concepts of our architecture are parallelism (for repetitive computations) and efficient line memory usage (obtained by analyzing memory access patterns). As a result of FPGA synthesis using Xilinx Virtex5LX330, it occupies 101,348 LUTs and 1,367 KB on-chip memory, giving performance of 30 frames per second at 100 MHz clock.

  • In this paper, we propose a new feature matching algorithm by modifying and combining the FAST(Features from Accelerated Segment Test) feature detector and SURF feature descriptor which is robust to the distortion of the given image. Scale space is generated to consider the variation of the scale and determine the candidate of features in the image robust to the noise. The original FAST algorithm results in many feature points along edges. To solve this problem, we apply the principal curvatures for refining it. We also use SURF descriptor to make it robust against the variations in the image by rotation. Through the experiments, it is shown that the proposed algorithm has better performance than the conventional feature matching algorithms even though it has much less computational load. Especially, it shows a strength for noisy images.

  • Panorama picturing is an elongated photographing technique that connects images with rotating and moving multiple images horizontally that are partly overlapped. However, for hand-operated photographs, it is difficult to adjust overlapped parts because of tilted angles. There has been a study comparing adjacent pictures using labeling technique but it was time-consuming and had angle dissonant cases in nature. In this paper, we propose a less time-consuming paranoiac scene reconstruction method. Our method is also based on labeling-and-comparing technique but uses only 1/3 of it. Then, if there exists angle dissonance, it tries to find characteristic points by SURF algorithm and adjusts them with homography. The efficacy of this method is experimentally verified by experiments using various images

  • In this paper, we proposed an implementation of panoramic image stitching that operates in real time at the embedded environment by applying ROI based PROSAC algorithm using the directionality of the image. The conventional panoramic image stitching applies SURF or SIFT algorithm which contains unnecessary computation and a lots of data to detect feature points. In this paper, we use the direction of the input image and we proposed the method of reducing the unnecessary computation by using ROI. We use a gyro sensor and an acceleration sensor. Output data from gyro and acceleration sensors can be calibrated by complementary filter. The calibration does not affect the operating time of the proposed image stitching algorithm in embedded environment. Therefore, it is possible to operate in real-time.

  • This thesis propose an efficient parallel structure method for implementing a FAST and BRIEF algorithm based Augmented Reality. SURF algorithm that is well known in the object recognition algorithms is robust in object recognition. However, there is a disadvantage for real time operation because, SURF implementation requires a lot of computation. Therefore, we used a FAST and BRIEF algorithm for object recognition, and we improved Conventional Parallel Structure based on OpenMP Library. As a result, it achieves a 70%~100% improvement in execution time on the embedded system.

  • This paper proposes a robust, imperceptible block-based digital video watermarking algorithm that makes use of the Speeded Up Robust Feature (SURF) technique. The SURF technique is used to extract the most important features of a video. A discrete multiwavelet transform (DMWT) domain in conjunction with a discrete cosine transform is used for embedding a watermark into feature blocks. The watermark used is a binary image. The proposed algorithm is further improved for robustness by an error-correction code to protect the watermark against bit errors. The same watermark is embedded temporally for every set of frames of an input video to improve the decoded watermark correlation. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DMWT domain video watermarking using SURF features is robust against common image processing attacks, motion JPEG2000 compression, frame averaging, and frame swapping attacks. The quality of a watermarked video under the proposed algorithm is high, demonstrating the imperceptibility of an embedded watermark.
