Stainless steel 316L (STS 316L) is widely used as a material of biopsy needle. However it has a side effect that tissue can be damaged by electrochemical operation between tissue and STS 316L. Many studies have been made on the ceramic coating of biopsy needle to reduce the side effect. In this study, STS 316L was coated with three bioceramics, $Al_2O_3$, $SiO_2$ and $ZrO_2$ using a RF magnetron sputtering method. The effects of ceramic coating on the electrical conductivity and coating strength of ceramic-coated STS 316L were investigated. The results showed that the electrical conductivity of ceramic-coated STS 316L was much lower than that of uncoated STS 316L. The coating strength of $ZrO_2$-coated STS 316L was 30% and 70% higher, respectively than those of $Al_2O_3$-coated STS 316L and $SiO_2_3$-coated STS 316L.
This article aims at investigating the effect of applied load and sliding speed on wear behavior of thermally spraryed STS316 coating. STS316 coatings were fabricated by flame spray process according to optimal parameters on steel substrates. Dry sliding wear tests were performed on STS316 coating using four different applied load as 10, 15, 20 and 25 N and four different sliding speed as 15, 30, 45 and 60 rpm. Wear behavior on worn surface was investigated using scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy disperive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS). The dominant wear mechanism of STS316 coating under low applied load and sliding speed was oxidation on worn surface. However, under high applied load and sliding speed the principal wear mechanism was abrasion on oxidation film and damage of oxidation film.
In the present study, process optimization for thermal-sprayed STS316 coating has been performed using $L_9(3^4)$ orthogonal array and analysis of variance (ANOVA). STS316 coatings were fabricated by flame spray process on steel substrate, and the hardness test and microstructure observation of the coatings were studied. The results of hardness test were analyzed by ANOVA. The ANOVA results showed that the spray distance had the greatest effect on hardness of the coating, on the other hands, the effects of oxygen gas flow and spray distance were ignorable. From these results, the optimal combination of the flame spray parameters could be derived, and confirmation experiment was carried out to verify these derived results. The calculated hardness of the coatings by ANOVA was found to approximately close to that of confirmation experimental result. Thus, it was considered that design of experiments using orthogonal array and ANOVA was effective for process optimization of thermal-sprayed STS316 coating.
In order to evaluate the corrosion resistance at the anode side separator for molten carbonate fuel cell, STS316 and SACC-STS316 (chromium and aluminum were simultaneously deposited by diffusion into STS316 authentic stainless steel substrate by pack-cementation process) were applied as the separator material. In case of STS316, corrosion proceeded via three steps ; a formation step of corrosion product until stable corrosion product, a protection step against corrosion until breakaway occurs, a advance step of corrosion after breakaway. Especially, STS316 would be impossible to use the separator without suitable surface modification because of rapid corrosion rate after formation of corrosion product, occurs the severe problem on stability of cell during long-time operation. Whereas, SACC-STS316 was showed more effective corrosion resistance than the present separator, STS316 due to the intermetallic compound layer such as NiAl, Ni3Al formed on the surface of STS316 specimen. And it is anticipated that, in order to use SACC-STS316 alternative separator at the anode side, coating process, which can lead to dense coating layer, has to be developed, and by suitable pre-treatment before using it, very effective corrosion resistance will be achieved.
Electroplating methods by molten salts and non-aqueous melts were employed for aluminium coating on STS 316L stainless steel. After coated with Ni or non-coated surface on stainless steel, Al pulse plating was carried out in two different types of electrolytes at room temperature. The Al layer from $AlCl_3$-TMPAC melts could not obtain appreciable thickness for engineering application due to chemical reactions between deposits and moisture of air. However, The Al coating by pulse plating in the Ethylbenzene-Toluene-$AlBr_3$ systems was found to be solid coating layer with a few $\mu\textrm{m}$ scale. The conductivity of Ethylbenzene-Toluene-$AlBr_3$ electrolyte was as functions of time and agitation. By seven days exposure after mixing of the electrolyte, Al-deposited layer shows uniform and near by pore-free with high current density (higher than 30mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$). The roughness and imperfection of coating layer were decreased with a increasing agitation speed. It was found that the optimum condition for the Al pulse plating on the 316L stainless steel was a 400mA peak current, duty cycle, $t_{on}$$t_{ off}$=3ms/1ms, and a current density of 30mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

DLC coatings have been deposited onto substrate of STS 316L and Ti alloy using r.f. PACVD (plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition) with a mixture of $C_{6}H_{6}$ and $SiH_{4}$ as the process gases. Corrosion performance of DLC coatings was investigated by electrochemical techniques (potentiodynamic polarization test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and surface analysis (scanning electron microscopy). The electrolyte used in this test was a 0.89% NaCl solution of pH 7.4 at temperature $37^{\circ}C$. The porosity and protective efficiency of DLC coatings were obtained using potentiodynamic polarization test. Moreover, the delamination area and volume fraction of water uptake of DLC coatings as a function of immersion time were calculated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. This study provides the reliable and quantitative data for assessment of the effect of substrate on corrosion performance of Si-DLC coatings. The results showed that Si-DLC coating on Ti alloy could improve corrosion resistance more than that on STS 316L in the simulated body fluid environment. This could be attributed to the formation of a dense and low-porosity coating, which impedes the penetration of water and ions.
In this study, we developed a Cr-free organic/inorganic hybrid solution and investigated its coating properties on degraded STS316L. Both the OIBD-1 solution and OIBD-2 solution had excellent corrosion resistance and adhesion ability. However, the solution had some problems in a boiling water environment. In addition, the flexibility was excellent, and the scratch resistance was relatively good.
This paper deals with the effects of counterpart materials on the wear behavior of thermally sprayed STS316 coatings. STS316 powders were flame-sprayed onto a carbon steel substrate. Dry sliding wear tests were performed using the applied loads of 15 N. AISI52100, $Al_2O_3$, $ZrO_2$ and $Si_3N_4$ balls were used as counterpart materials. Wear behavior of STS316 coatings against different counterpart materials were studied using a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results show that the wear behavior of thermally sprayed STS316 coatings strongly depends on the type of counterpart material. Dominant wear mechanism was similar for all studied materials as failure of adhesion film except for Si3N4 used as counterpart material. In the case of Si3N4 used as counterpart material, dominant wear mechanism was abrasion.
The corrosion and degradation factors of a current collector in a molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) were investigated to determine the optimized coating thickness of nickel on STS316L. The results show that the surface morphology and electrical properties depended on the nickel coating thickness. The surface morphology gradually changed from a flat to a porous structure along as the nickel coating thickness decreased, and the electrical resistance of the nickel-coated STS316L increased as the nickel coating thickness decreased. This can be attributed to the diffusion of elements of Fe and Cr from the substrate through the nickel grain boundaries. Additionally, carburization in the metal grains or grain boundaries in an anodic environment was found to influence the electrical properties due to matrix distortion. The resistance of Cr-oxide layers formed in an anodic environment causes a drop in the potential, resulting in a decrease in the system efficiency.
Cubic boron nitride (c-BN) is a promising material for use in many potential applications because of its outstanding physical properties such as high thermal stability, high abrasive wear resistance, and super hardness. Even though 316L austenitic stainless steel (STS) has poor wear resistance causing it to be toxic in the body due to wear and material chips, 316L STS has been used for implant biomaterials in orthopedics due to its good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Therefore, in the present study, c-BN films with a $B_4C$ layer were applied to a 316L STS specimen in order to improve its wear resistance. The deposition of the c-BN films was performed using an r.f. (13.56 MHz) magnetron sputtering system with a $B_4C$ target. The coating layers were characterized using XPS and SEM, and the mechanical properties were investigated using a nanoindenter. The friction coefficient of the c-BN coated 316L STS steel was obtained using a pin-on-disk according to the ASTM G163-99. The thickness of the obtained c-BN and $B_4C$ were about 220 nm and 630 nm, respectively. The high resolution XPS spectra analysis of B1s and N1s revealed that the c-BN film was mainly composed of $sp^3$ BN bonds. The hardness and elastic modulus of the c-BN measured by the nanoindenter were 46.8 GPa and 345.7 GPa, respectively. The friction coefficient of the c-BN coated 316L STS was decreased from 3.5 to 1.6. The wear property of the c-BN coated 316L STS was enhanced by a factor of two.
