Moore, Oklahoma was hit by an EF5 tornado on May 20, 2013. The tornado track slightly overlapped with two previous tornadoes that occurred on May 3, 1999 and May 8, 2003 respectively. A research team from Texas Tech University was deployed to investigate the performance of shelters based on observation of their post-storm conditions. Sixty-one shelter units were further documented by size, manufacturer, and date of installation if available. Then they were crossed referenced with the external databases to determine their compliance with design and construction standards by the International Code Council/National Storm Shelter Association and/or criteria from the Federal Emergency Management Agency publications. Wind intensity was estimated for each shelter location using the EF scale. Results showed a marked increase in the number of exterior underground shelters as well as the popularity of a new in-garage floor underground shelter design. All of the units provided protection for their occupants with no loss of life reported. However, one older shelter had a door failure due to neglect of maintenance. Recommendations were made to improve future performance of shelters.
Lake Sihwa has a very unique watershed environment, surrounded by industrial, urban and rural catchment area with different land use. The first flush phenomenon was investigated in 3 catchment area. 4TG, representing the industrial area, shows rapid discharges of highly concentrated pollutants during the early stages of a storm and it is indicating a strong first flush effect. At AS, representing the urban area, the pollutant concentration reached its peak approximately 2~3 hours after the start of storm, which is a strong first flush effect did not appear. JJB and MS represent the rural areas, the PEMC analysis results suggest that highly concentrated pollutants were discharged during the middle and latter stages of a storm, instead of early pollutant runoff due to the effects of rainwater runoff.

This study discusses application of the storm water management model (SWMM) to designing the sponge city facilities in the Athletes Village of Military World Games in Wuhan in October 2019. The SWMM was used to simulate the runoff processes and reduction efficiencies of the sponge city facilities. The runoffs of the sponge city facilities were compared with those of traditional drainage system for the design rainfall of 35.2mm and the rainfalls with different recurrence periods. The results show that the hign density sponge city facilities could meet the requirements for 80% of annual runoff control rate, SWMM can determine the scales of the sponge city facilities and effectively simulate the hydrological processes for different layout schemes. The simulation model is also helpful to making optimization of the sponge city facility layout.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world and has presented the scientific community with unprecedented challenges. Infection is associated with overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines secondary to hyperactivation of the innate immune response, inducing a cytokine storm and triggering multiorgan failure and significant morbidity/mortality. No specific treatment is yet available. For thousands of years, Panax notoginseng has been used to treat various infectious diseases. Experimental evidence of P. notoginseng utility in terms of alleviating the cytokine storm, especially the cascade, and improving post-COVID-19 symptoms, suggests that P. notoginseng may serve as a valuable adjunct treatment for COVID-19 infection.

In February 2008, high storm waves due to a developed atmospheric low pressure system propagating from the west off Hokkaido, Japan, to the south and southwest throughout the East Sea (ES) caused extensive damages along the central coast of Japan and along the east coast of Korea. This study consists of two parts. In the first part, we estimate extreme storm wave characteristics in the Toyama Bay where heavy coastal damages occurred, using a non-hydrostatic meteorological model and a spectral wave model by considering the extreme conditions for two factors for wind wave growth, such as wind intensity and duration. The estimated extreme significant wave height and corresponding wave period were 6.78 m and 18.28 sec, respectively, at the Fushiki Toyama. In the second part, we perform numerical experiments on wave-structure interaction in the Fushiki Port, Toyama Bay, where the long North-Breakwater was heavily damaged by the storm waves in February 2008. The experiments are conducted using a non-linear shallow-water equation model with adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) and wet-dry scheme. The estimated extreme storm waves of 6.78 m and 18.28 sec are used for incident wave profile. The results show that the Fushiki Port would be overtopped and flooded by extreme storm waves if the North-Breakwater does not function properly after being damaged. Also the storm waves would overtop seawalls and sidewalls of the Manyou Pier behind the North-Breakwater. The results also depict that refined meshes by AMR method with wet-dry scheme applied capture the coastline and coastal structure well while keeping the computational load efficiently.
Solar wind dynamic pressure enhancements are known to cause various types of disturbances to the magnetosphere. In particular, dynamic pressure enhancements may affect the evolution of magnetic storms when they occur during storm times. In this paper, we have investigated the statistical significance and features of dynamic pressure enhancements during magnetic storm times. For the investigation, we have used a total of 91 geomagnetic storms for 2001-2003, for which the Dst minimum $(Dst_{min})$ is below -50 nT. Also, we have imposed a set of selection criteria for a pressure enhancement to be considered an event: The main selection criterion is that the pressure increases by ${\geq}50%\;or\;{\geq}3nPa$ within 30 min and remains to be elevated for 10 min or longer. For our statistical analysis, we define the storm time to be the interval from the main Dst decrease, through $Dst_{min}$, to the point where the Dst index recovers by 50%. Our main results are summarized as follows. $(i){\sim}$ 81% of the studied storms indicate at least one event of pressure enhancements. When averaged over all the 91 storms, the occurrence rate is ${\sim}$ 4.5 pressure enhancement events per storm and ${\sim}$ 0.15 pressure enhancement events per hour. (ii) The occurrence rate of the pressure enhancements is about three times higher for CME-driven storm times than for CIR-driven storm times. (iii) Only 21.1% of the pressure enhancements show a clear association with an interplanetary shock. (iv) A large number of the pressure enhancement events are accompanied with a simultaneous change of IMF $B_y$ and/or $B_z$: For example, 73.5% of the pressure enhancement events are associated with an IMF change of either $|{\Delta}B_z|>2nT\;or\;|{\Delta}B_y|>2nT$. This last finding suggests that one should consider possible interplay effects between the simultaneous pressure and IMF changes in many situations.
Even thought the distribution of the rainfall in the watershed is spatially and temporally vareid, the simulation of the runoff from the watershed is frequently conducted with the constant rainfall distribution assumption. However, the runoff simulated with this assumption indicates over the certain accuracy limitation and the difference by this assumption is bigger in the case of the moving storm which can be frequently indicated with the typhoon, cyclone and hurricane and so on. In this paper, the runoff characteristics of the moving storm are investigated using GIS technique and the isohyetal map observed from 16:00 to 23:00 on August 2, 1999 to the Chun Yang rain gage. The runoff simulated by the moving storms moving to the eight different directions is compared with the others and indicates the big difference with the maximum runoff in the SE direction in the Bokha experimental watershed. Also, the runoff by the moving storm having different moving velocities is compared with the others and indicates the big difference with the bigger discharge in the slowly moving storm. Through the simulation using GIS technique in the watershed, the advantages of the easy preparation of the data and the short computational time can be obtained.

In order to understand the mechanism of the cross-shore evolution of storm (barred) and normal (nonbarred) profiles of a sandy beach, the vertically two-dimensional laboratory experiment was performed with a movable bed. The beach profiles and free surface motion were measured under monochromatic wave conditions evolving the storm and normal beach profiles. The observation was conducted in the surf zone during the alternation of the two wave conditions to reach its quasi-equilibrium state. The sandbar-crest and trough and the steep berm were evolved due to the plunging breakers in the storm case, and the bar-trough was decayed due to the spilling breakers in the normal case. From the measurements, it was found that the storm wave case was in an erosion state and the normal wave case was in an accretion state. The strong undertow, which is a dominant factor of the offshore migration mechanism, was developed in the storm wave case, and the weak undertow was developed in the normal wave case. The skewness and the asymmetry of the nonlinear wave motion, which is a dominant factor of the onshore migration mechanism, was measured similarly in both cases.

The discovery of the mirror neuron system (MNS) is one of the most important neuroscientific achievements in the 20th century. Some researchers had reported that MNS dysfunction was discovered in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Finally, the 'broken mirror' theory of ASD was announced in the mid 2000's. According to this theory, ASD cannot simulate the mind and behavior of others due to MNS dysfunction; therefore, they cannot imitate the behaviors and empathized with the mind of others. However, ASD does not always show imitation problems. The researchers who have criticized the 'broken mirror' theory proposed the 'social top-down response modulation (STORM)' theory. On STORM theory, the medial prefrontal cortex or temporo-parietal junction, brain areas related with mentalising, might modulate MNS according to social context. We compared the strengths and weaknesses of each theory.

Numerical simulations of the storm surge and waves induced by the Typhoon Bolaven incident on the west sea of Korea in 2012 are performed using the JMA-MSM weather field provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency, and the calculated surge heights are compared with the time history observed at harbours along the various coasts of Korea. For the waves occurring coincidentally with the storm surges the calculated significant wave heights are compared with the data measured using the wave buoys operated by the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency and the Korea Meteorological Administration. Additional simulations are also performed based on the pressure and wind fields obtained using the best track information provided by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, and the calculated results are compared and analyzed. The waves and storm surges calculated using JMA-MSM wether field agree well with the observations because of the better reflection of the topography and the pre-background weather field. On the other hand, the calculated results based on the weather fields produced using the JTWC best track information show some limitations of the general trend of the variations of wave and surge heights. Based on the results of this study it is found that the reliable weather fields are essential for the accurate simulation of storm surges and waves.
