This paper describes computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) systems as strategic information systems for business which play an important role in accelerating the speed of business, and develops a measure showing a degree of business tendency to be CIM which enables the business to check on its present status as far as CIM is concerned. It is well known that the productivity of knowledge workers is lower than that of other workers. Nowadays, a great deal of effort goes into the productivity improvement of knowledge workers. In this respect, this paper also develops a quantitative model for the productivity of knowledge workers. Finally, this paper deals with following four steps which our small business should follow through its process of CIM: [Step 1] Using expert knowledge; [Step 2] Invention of technological information; [Step 3] Feedback of factory information to the management; and, [Step 4] Accelerating the speed of business.

This paper deals with a case study of layout design and improvement in medium and small-sized manufacturing factories. The shop layout affects greatly the productivity of manufacturing systems and we introduce some cases in which shop layouts are changed to improve the productivity step by step. Based on case studies, we propose also some guides to improve and design the shop layout in medium and small-sized manufacturing factories.

The business of manufacturing is increasingly becoming time-compressing, precise and long-life oriented, owing to various needs from the consumers and harsh global competition. With the emergence of the layer laminate manufacturing method, it is possible to produce prototypes directly from 3D CAD and additive process, the production time and cost have shortened dramatically. However there are some problems like surface-step, dimensional deviation and warp. A newly developed powder casting is suitable for rapid-manufacturing metallic tools. Powder casting can serve as a promising rapid tooling method because of high density characteristics and low dimensional shrinkage below 0.1% during sintering and infiltration. By this process, we have realized significant time savings bypassing the wait for prototype tooling and cost savings eliminating the expense of conventional prototype tooling process.
ㆍ STEP is an International Standard (ISO 10303) - that defines the methodology to create computer interpretable product data models. ㆍ STEP Implementation - allows exchange and sharing of product data while retaining semantics throughout the product life cycle. ' STEP is in deployment - PDM data exchange at Boeing and others - Geometry data exchange at GM and others ㆍ The STEP community overcomes obstacles - “They will never finish the standard” (done 1994) - “They will never be able to transfer solids” (done 1995) - “They will never make solids transfer reliable” (done 1997) - “They will never implement all those Application Protocols”(TBD)(omitted)

An international standard for the product model data, STEP, and a standard for the distributed object technology. CORBA, will play a very important role in the future manufacturing environment. These two technologies provide background for the sharing of product data and the integration of applications on the network. This paper describes a prototype CAD/CAE enviroment that is integrated on the network by STEP and CORBA. Several application servers and client software were developed to verify the proposed concept.

The convergence of artificial intelligence with smart factories or smart mechanical systems has been actively studied to maximize the efficiency and safety. Despite the high improvement of artificial neural networks, their application in the manufacturing industry has been difficult due to limitations in obtaining meaningful data from factories or mechanical systems. Accordingly, there have been active studies on manufacturing components with sensor integration allowing them to generate important data from themselves. Additive manufacturing enables the fabrication of a net shaped product with various materials including plastic, metal, or ceramic parts. With the principle of layer-by-layer adhesion of material, there has been active research to utilize this multi-step manufacturing process, such as changing the material at a certain step of adhesion or adding sensor components in the middle of the additive manufacturing process. Particularly for smart parts manufacturing, researchers have attempted to embed sensors or integrated circuit boards within a three-dimensional component during the additive manufacturing process. While most of the sensor embedding additive manufacturing was based on polymer material, there have also been studies on sensor integration within metal or ceramic materials. This study reviews the additive manufacturing technology for sensor integration into plastic, ceramic, and metal materials.

In a design-to-manufacturing environment, the product data is shared by various CAD/CAM/CAE systems with little integration or substantial data redundancy. The main purpose of this paper is to build a database containing all the features required for STEP-NC machining and to show how a STEP-NC repository can support the complete process for machining. A STEP-NC database schema has been constructed and several query functions have been built for the purpose of implementing the retrieving system of a STEP-NC database. The EXPRESS data model of ISO 14649 has been mapped to the database data definition language of the Oracle database. To apply the STEP-NC database to an industry example, the ISO 14649 part program has been stored into the STEP-NC database. To implement example scenarios, the sample query interface has been built.

Overlap cutting is a fundamental method of applying abrasive water jet (AWJ) machining to milling to produce a wider surface because the nozzle outlet is approximately 1.0 mm wide. In this study, the effects of overlap cutting on the depth profile and surface roughness are investigated. The overlapping area depends on the amount of step over, which is controlled in the pick-feed direction. If the step over is equal to or larger than the diameter of the nozzle, no overlap cut occurs but large cusps remain between the cut paths. A step over as small as one-thirds of the nozzle diameter may lead to triple-overlap cutting resulting in an extraordinary depth. By using pocket milling experiments with a step over of 0.46 (or 0.47), it is verified that AWJ can produce a milled surface of titanium, one of the hard-to-cut materials, with $76{\mu}m$ Ra.
As the result of the research on the manufacturing procedure of Sogog-ju in the classical literature(35 kinds), it was found that Sogog-ju is usually brewed on the first Boar day of January and Sogog-ju base is added to it in about 7days and then the fermentation of Sogog-ju comes to end in about 21 days. The material grains out of 48 items, used in the first step of brewing Sogog-ju, are nonglutnous rice 47 items(98%), flour 20items(42%), somnuruk 9 items(19%) out of nuruk (fermenter) 48 items (100%) and nuruk water 5 items(17%), and flour 3 items(6%) are used, but fermenter nuruk is not used. When the grains are used in the first step of brewing, they are usually in the form of gruel and rice cake, and in the second step of brewing, they are usually made into steam water soaked rice. Nuruk, Which is largely used in the first step, is usually put after the processed grains get cold, but in the second step of brewing, it may be put into the still warm grains. There are hardly any cases when nuruk is used in conspicously small quantity.
