Tribological enhancement of $CaCO_3$dissolution during scanning force microscopy

  • We report scanning force microscope (SFM) observations of enhanced calcite dissolution in aqueous solution due to mechanical stimulation induced by the SFM tip. Images and mechanical treatment were performed in saturated ($\geq$ 60 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) CaCO$_3$ solution adjusted to pH~9. Small area scans of monolayer steps significantly increased the step velocity in the scanned area (in the direction corresponding to dissolution) when the applied contact force is above about 160 nN fer the tips employed. The step velocity could be increased at least an order of magnitude by scanning at even higher contact forces (e.g.,270nN). This enhancement is a function of step orientation relative to the calcite lattice. Indentations near preexisting steps also locally enhance the step velocity. We present evidence that the higher dissolution rates are caused by stress-induced increases in the rate of double-kink nucleation.

  • In this paper, new photovoltaic system that has 3 step output voltage is proposed. This system use new PWM method named as equivalent area PWM. This method is based on the criterion of the calculation that each area of voltage pulses equals to the integrated value of each time shared division of the reference sinusodial waveform to make a PWM pulse. We applyed this method to 2 step inverter and 3 step inverter and analyzed waveform using FFT.

  • In this paper, we propose an approach to identify the driving environment for intelligent highway vehicles by means of image processing and computer vision techniques. The proposed approach mainly consists of two consecutive computational steps. The first step is the lane marking detection, which is used to identify the location of the host vehicle and road geometry. In this step, related standard image processing techniques are adapted for lane-related information. In the second step, by using the output from the first step, a four-stage algorithm for vehicle detection is proposed to provide information on the relative position and speed between the host vehicle and each preceding vehicle. The proposed approach has been validated in several real-world scenarios. Herein, experimental results indicate low false alarm and low false dismissal and have demonstrated the robustness of the proposed detection approach.

  • This paper proposes a correction method for the error inherently created by time-step approximation in finite element analysis (FEA). For a simple RL and RLC linear circuit, the error in time-step analysis is analytically investigated, and a correction method is proposed for a non-linear system as well as a linear one. Then, for a practical inductor model, linear and non-linear time-step analyses are performed and the calculation results are corrected by the proposed methods. The accuracy of the corrected results is confirmed by comparing the electric input and output powers.

  • This paper introduces a variable step-size adaptive algorithm for blind source separation. From the frequency characteristics of mixed input signals, we need to adjust the convergence speed regularly in each frequency bin. This algorithm varies a step-size according to the magnitude of input at each frequency bin. This guarantee of the regular convergence in each frequency bin would become more efficient in separation performances than conventional fixed step-size FDICA. Computer simulation results show the improvement of about 5 dB in signal to interference ratio (SIR) and the better separation quality.

  • In this paper, a real-coded genetic algorithm is proposed for identification of time delay systems from step responses. FOPDT(First-Order Plus Dead-Time) and SOPDT(Second-Order Plus Dead-Time) systems, which are the most useful processes in this field, but are difficult for system identification because of a long dead-time problem and a model mismatch problem. Genetic algorithms have been successfully applied to a variety of complex optimization problems where other techniques have often failed. Thus, the modified crossover operator of a real-code genetic algorithm is proposed to effectively search the system parameters. The proposed method, using a real-coding genetic algorithm, shows better performance characteristics when compared to the usual area-based identification method and the directed identification method that uses step responses.

  • Bilateral Variable-Ratio chopper system performs Step-down chopper and Step-up chopper operations automatically every operating period of the chopper. The Ratio between Step-down chopper and Step-up chopper operations is determined by a Tine- ratio and the circuit elements. In this paper, we suggest that this chopper system can operate variable speed control of the electric motorcar when it is applied to the electric motorcar.

  • In this paper, a thermally stable nickel silicide technology using the co-sputtering of nickel and titanium atoms capped with TiN layer is proposed for nano-scale metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) applications. The effects of the incorporation of titanium ingredient in the co-sputtered Ni layer are characterized as a function of Ti sputtering power. The difference between the one-step rapid thermal process (RTP) and two-step RTP for the silicidation process has also been studied. It is shown that a certain proportion of titanium incorporation with two-step RTP has the best thermal stability for this structure.

  • In this paper, we introduce a new class of completely generalized strongly nonlinear quasivariational inequalities and establish its equivalence with a class of fixed point problems by using the resolvent operator technique. Utilizing this equivalence, we develop a three-step iterative scheme with errors, obtain a few existence theorems of solutions for the completely generalized non-linear strongly quasivariational inequality involving relaxed monotone, relaxed Lipschitz, strongly monotone and generalized pseudocontractive mappings and prove some convergence and stability results of the sequence generated by the three-step iterative scheme with errors. Our results include several previously known results as special cases.

  • This paper presents a low-complexity triple-error-correcting parallel Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) decoder architecture and its efficient design techniques. A novel modified step-by-step (m-SBS) decoding algorithm, which significantly reduces computational complexity, is proposed for the parallel BCH decoder. In addition, a determinant calculator and a error locator are proposed to reduce hardware complexity. Specifically, a sharing syndrome factor calculator and a self-error detection scheme are proposed. The multi-channel multi-parallel BCH decoder using the proposed m-SBS algorithm and design techniques have considerably less hardware complexity and latency than those using a conventional algorithms. For a 16-channel 4-parallel (1020, 990) BCH decoder over GF($2^{12}$), the proposed design can lead to a reduction in complexity of at least 23 % compared to conventional architecttures.
