  • It was reported that Red ginseng contains specific ginsenoside-Rg$_2$,-Rg$_3$,-Rh$_1$and -Rh$_2$, which show various pharmacological effects. However, production of these specific ginsenosides from Red ginseng is not commercially applicable because of high cost of the raw material, roots. This work was carried out to examine the production of Red ginseng specific ginsenosides from Agrobacterium-transformed hairy roots. Hairy roots were induced from 3 year-old root segment of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) after infection with Agrobacterium rhizogenes A4. Among many lines of hairybroots, KGHR-8A was selected. Steam heat treatment of hairy roots was resulted in the changes of ginsenoside composition. Eleven ginsenosides were detected in heat-treated hairy roots but eight in freeze dried hairy roots. In heat treated hairy root, content of ginsenoside-Rb$_1$,Rb$_2$,Rc, Rd, Re, Rf, and Rg$_1$were decreased compared to those of freeze dried hairy roots. However, heat treatment strongly enhanced the amount of Red ginseng specific ginsenogides (ginsenoside-Rg$_2$,-Rg$_3$,-Rh$_1$and -Rh$_2$). Amounts of ginsenoside-Rg$_3$,-Rh$_1$and -Rh$_2$ in heat-treated hairy roots were 2.58, 3.62 and 1.08 mg/g dry wt, respectively, but these were detected as trace amount in hairy roots without heat treatment. Optimum condition of heat treatment for the production of Red ginseng specific ginsenoside was 2 h at 105$^{\circ}C$. This result represents that Red ginseng specific ginsenoside can be producted from hairy roots by steam heat treatment.

  • The chemical heat storage as the one way of utilization for high temperature solar energy was considered. The stram reforming reaction of methane was chosen for endothermic reaction. The reactor was made of stainless steel and the dimension was 6.25 mm I.D. and 30 cm long coiled tube because of the geometry requirement of solar receiver. The methane conversion was increased linearly with reaction temperature and nickel content of catalyst. The methane conversion was 60% at $600^{\circ}C$ and 90% at $900^{\circ}C$. The feasibility of steam reforming of methane as the conversion of solar energy to chemical heat storage was confirmed.

  • Soybean oil (SBO) was carried out deodorization at 4 factors as controlled maximum deodorizing temperature (DT), vacuum degree (VD), cycle time (CT) and treating amount of stripping steam (TASS). The results were as follows, acid value (AV), peroxide value (PV) and trans fatty acid content (TFAC) in produced deodorized SBO. Obtained deodorized SBO at high DT had the lower AV, PV, but TFAC was increased relatively. A suitable level of VD and TASS was 4.0 torr and 2.0%(w/w), than the longer CT was appeared a superior quality level. As a result, the best deodorizing conditions in SBO for lower TFAC were maximum DT; $235^{\circ}C$, VD;4.0torr, CT; $14{\sim}15min$ and TASS; 2.0% (w/w). Deodorizing conditions for lower TFAC in deodorizing of SBO was the major factor, more than lower DT was difficult because of the others quality factors.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of superheated steam (SHS) treatment on the physicochemical and microbial properties of garlic. The garlic was treated by SHS at temperatures of 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, and $350^{\circ}C$ for 60 s. The moisture content of raw garlic was lower than that of SHS-treated garlic. The total thiosulfinate and pyruvate contents were dramatically reduced by SHS treatments. The antioxidant activities of garlic measured by ferric reducing/antioxidant power, 2,2-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt radical scavenging assay, and total phenolics content decreased by SHS. The major volatile sulfur compounds of garlic such as diallyl disulfide, allicin, allyl sulfide, diallyl sulfide, and diallyl trisulfide were significantly reduced by SHS. The antimicrobial effects of raw garlic were stronger than those of SHS-treated garlic against three strains of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus cereus. However, total aerobic bacteria in garlic were dramatically reduced by SHS from 8.6 to 2.9 log CFU/g. The results from the sensory evaluation show that SHS treatment of garlic above $200^{\circ}C$ provides better acceptably due to reduction of off-flavor and pungency of garlic. These results suggest that superheated steam treatment can used as an efficient process for reducing garlic off-flavor and pungency.

  • The objective of this study was to manufacture the wood based roughage using lumber from thinning of oak and pitch pine (Pinus rigida). And the study also aimed to investigate a feed value evaluation of wood based roughages. To investigate the optimization condition of steam-digestion treatment for roughage, the wood chips of oak and pitch pine were steam-digestion treated at $160^{\circ}C$ under pressure 6 atm depending on treatment times (60 min, 90 min and 120 min) followed by the content of essential oils analyzed. The essential oil content of steam-digestion treated roughages for 90 min and 120 min were under 0.1 mL/kg. The evaluation of feed value was carried out from steam-digestion treated roughages for 90 min through feed chemical composition analysis, NRC (National research Council) modeling, ruminal degradability analysis and relative economic value analysis. The feed chemical compositions including DM (dry mater), CP (crude protein), EE (ether extract), NDF (neutral detergent fiber), ADF (acid detergent fiber), ADL (acid detergent lignin), NFC (nonfiber carbohydrate) in oak roughage were 95.4, 1.36, 3.11, 90.05, 83.85, 17.33, 6.50%, respectively, and in pitch pine roughage were 94.37, 1.33, 5.48, 87.89, 86.88, 30.56, 6.32%, respectively. Both roughages showed low level of protein and very high level of NDF. The TDN (total digestible nutrient) levels using NRC (2001) model in oak and pitch pine roughages were 40.55, 31.22%, respectively. The ruminal in situ dry matter degradability was higher in oak roughage (23.84%) than in pitch pine roughage (10.02%). The economic values of oak and pitch pine rough-ages were 235, and 210 \, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the steaming and wet grinding conditions to save effective compositions and to utilize whole roots of ginseng. The sweetness at the 3 different steaming conditions of non steaming group (A), $95^{\circ}C$/3 hr group (B) and $121^{\circ}C$/15 min group (C) resulted in 7.7, 10.7 and $11.2^{\circ}Brix$, and the browning intensity of 0.37, 1.97 and 1.50, respectively. The contents of crude saponin at the different steam heat treatments were 7.19 (A), 6.99 (B) and 8.83 mg/g (C). When sensory evaluation was conducted, the ginseng products processed at C condition showed the highest scores in the evaluation categories of bitter taste reduction, sweetness and overall acceptance. These results suggest that sensory characteristics of ginseng could be enhanced by the steam heat treatments. When the wet grinding with water addition volume to the steamed ginseng treated at $121^{\circ}C$ for 15 min was also investigated, the smallest particle size resulted from the water addition volume of 300%. The grinding efficiency of ginseng was found to be high at 30 min of grinding time and 3 times of grinding frequency with the mean particle size of $67.66\;{\mu}m$. The content of effective component did not show significant differences by grinding time and grinding frequency. Based on the results, the steam heat treatments ($121^{\circ}C$/15 min) and wet grinding procedures were found to be effective in utilizing whole roots and saving the effective compositions of ginseng.

  • In this study, green Larix kaempferi lumber was heat-treated by using superheated steam (SHS) at a pilot scale and then various physico-mechanical properties of the heat-treated wood were evaluated and compared with the properties of conventional hot air (HA) heat-treated wood. Decay resistance of brown rot fungi and compressive strength parallel to the grain of the SHS heat-treated wood without occurrence of drying check from green lumber were increased. On the other hand, density, equilibrium moisture content, shrinkage, and bending strength of the SHS heat-treated wood were lower than those of the conventional HA heat-treated wood. Because heat transfer and thermal hydrolysis of SHS heat treatment was accelerated by a large amount of water, the effect of SHS heat treatment on the physico-mechanical properties was higher than that of HA heat treatment at the similar conditions of temperature and time. From the results of this study, because green lumber can be heat-treated without occurrence of cracks or checks by using SHS and similar heat treatment effect on the physico-mechanical properties of wood can be produced despite a low temperature or short time of heat treatment, it is expected that heat time and energy consumption could be reduced by using SHS.

  • Precast concrete method is known to have advantages of minimizing works in the construction, controlling concrete quality easily and saving construction period due to only fabrication work in the construction field, but it needs to apply steam curing to accelerate early concrete strength. In the meanwhile, the oil cost for steam curing has been continuously increased because of political instability in the middle East and international economic shaky. Thus, this study addresses the development of precast/ prestressed concrete which has over 14MPa at 1 day age and specified concrete strength of 40MPa at low temperature, not applying steam curing. Tests were carried out in terms of material characteristics in fresh concrete and compressive strength using 3 types of cement such as Type I, Type III and rapid hardening compound cement. As results of tests, it is found that cements for rapid hardening had disadvantages with respect to slump, slump loss, and air content, but showed higher compressive strength than specified one, especially the highest value when using rapid hardening compound.
