Classification and Analysis of Switched Reluctance Converters

  • This paper reviews and analyzes converters for SRM(Switched Reluctance Motor) drive. Conventional classification focuses on the number of power switches and diodes. It is easy to find the number of semiconductors and the cost by counting the number of active components, but it does not show the important characteristics of a power converter. The voltage ratings for the power switches and diodes are also difficult to identify. This paper proposes a switched reluctance (SR) converter configuration that is classified based on the commutation type and magnetic energy path. The converter has three parts: utility interface, front-end circuit, and power converter. Based on the overview on the conventional SR drive, the most important characteristic of the converter is determined by the topology of front-end in conjunction with the power converter. An SR converter has two parts: front-end and power converter. Inasmuch as the capacitive front-end is widely used for voltage source converters, this paper focuses on topologies for the front-end.

  • This paper reviewed and analyzed converters for SRM drive. SR converter has two parts, front ends and power converter. Since the capacitive front-end is widely used in voltage source converter, this paper focuses on topologies with the front-end. A novel classification of power converters for SR drives based on the commutation type is also introduced and analyzed.

A KY Converter Integrated with a SR Boost Converter and a Coupled Inductor

  • A KY converter integrated with a conventional synchronously rectified (SR) boost converter and a coupled inductor is presented in this paper. This improved KY converter has the following advantages: 1) the two converters use common switches; 2) the voltage gain of the KY converter can be improved due to the integration of a boost converter and a coupled inductor; 3) the leakage inductance of the coupled inductor is utilized to achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS); 4) the current stress on the charge pump capacitors and the decreasing rate of the diode current can be limited due to the use of the coupled inductor; and 5) the output current is non-pulsating. Moreover, the active switches are driven by using one half-bridge gate driver. Thus, no isolated driver is needed. Finally, the operating principle and analysis of the proposed converter are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed converter.

The Utilization of the steel converter dust (철강전노 dust의 활용에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, magnetite($Fe_3$$O_4$) from the converter dust of the Kwangyang steel making factory has been recove-red by means of the magnetic separation and the sedimentation column. The magnetite recovered from the dust is used for the preparation of Sr-ferrite instead of hematite. The results obtained in this study as follows : 1. The converter EP dust of the Kwangyang steel making factory are composed of $\alpha$-Fe, ($Fe_3$$O_4$) wustite etc. Magnetite in the converter EP dust is recovered by using sedimentation column and plastic bonding magnet. 2. It was confirmed that Sr-ferrite synthesis could be possible without oxidizing roasting of the magnetite. The steps of Sr-ferrite formation are proposed as follows : I$SrCO_3$ $+Fe_3$O$_4$+1/2(1-X)$O_2$longrightarrow$\alpha$ $-Fe _2$$O_3$ $+SrFeO _3$\ulcorner+$CO_2$II. $5.5\alpha$ $-Fe_2$$O_3$ $+SrFeO_3$\ulcornerlongrightarrowSrFe\ulcornerO\ulcorner+1/2(1/2-X)$O_2$3. By using magnetite from the dust insted of hematite, the hard Sr-ferrite magnet of (B.H)\ulcorner=2.64MGOe in the magnetic characteristics was succesfully prepared.

  • Design and drive characteristics of SR drive for hydraulic pump system using passive converter is presented in this paper. In oder to get the high performance, a simple passive circuit is added in the front-end of a conventional asymmetric converter, which consists of three diodes and one capacitor. This passive converter has the high demagnetization voltage, to reduce the demagnetization time. Futhermore optimal turn-off angle for the proposed passive converter is proposed. According to motor speed and current, an optimal turn-off angle can be achieved by look-up table to reduce torque ripple. The characteristic of proposed hydraulic pump system using passive converter is verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • This paper presents a method of synchronous rectifier(SR) for improving the efficiency in DC/DC converter. The proposed method is used push-pull topology on primary as a single winding self driven synchronous rectification(SWSDSR). Specially, this method can improve efficiency to turn on SR switch during dead time. Finally, the simulation and experimental results will be given to show comparison and analysis on the efficiency between self driven synchronous rectification(SDSR) and SWSDSR method.

  • In this paper, we present a design technique that miniaturises the DC-DC converter, a key component in the electric vehicle system, using the advanced material (Ga-N HEMT) in the LLC resonant converter and freely changes the resonant frequency. This design is also proposed to improve the efficiency and temperature characteristics by adding SR Topology in the secondary side output during the operation of power supply. In this experiment, as a consequence of the constructed circuit with the operation of high switching frequency of 200 kHz, the size of LLC and PFC was able to be minimised by 40[%]. Thus, the characteristics of operating temperature demonstrated $60-65^{\circ}C$ without a heat sink, when the temperature was measured at 250W (12V/20A). The features were all due to the advantages of the change of switching frequency, switching circuits implementation, and the maximisation of switching frequency. Based on these design results, we would like to implement more than 1 [kW].

  • This paper presents a novel current driving method for the synchronous rectifier (SR) in a Flyback topology. The proposed current driven synchronous rectifier features low Power loss, good performance and the gate voltage of FET in the synchronous rectifier is easily controlled by zener voltage. The proposed SR driving method is implemented in a 200W Flyback converter with 400Vdc input and achieved excellent performance at full load.

  • This paper presents 3-phase current regulation of SR motor by only single current sensor. The conventional drive system of SR motor has a current sensor per each phase. In this paper, The asymmetric bridge converter which Is able to control independently phases and be excited simultaneously is used fs the driver system for 6/4 poles SR motor. And the sensor Is replaced 3 sensors of each phase with only one on bus line of converter so as to detect current of every phase. A drive logic circuit is designed on EPLD with Delta modulation using a fixed frequency This technique is verified through simulation and experiment.
