  • This paper is concerned with numerical simulation of hypervelocity impacts(HVIs) of a projectile on laminated composite plate targets using SPH method. A one-parameter visco-plasticity model and damage model is used to describe the HVIs response of composite materials. The numerical simulation was carried out for a steel projectile striking to aluminum plate targets and for an aluminum projectile striking to laminated graphite/epoxy (Gr/Ep) composite plate targets. Through the numerical simulation, comparison with the HVIs response of isotropic materials and composite materials is discussed.

  • Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is a Lagrangian method widely used for the modeling fluid flows. Simulations of explosions require, besides the hydrodynamic equations, a realistic equation of state, an energy source term, and a set of chemical kinetic equations to follow the composition changes of the gas during the explosion. The performance of the hydrodynamic equations is investigated in the framework of the Sedov-Taylor blast-wave. The implementation of chemical kinetic equations and equation of state is studied with 1D detonation of TNT slab. Our results are compared to those from analytical and experimental studies.

  • A stabilized incompressible smoothed particles hydrodynamics (ISPH) method is utilized to simulate free falling rigid body into water domain. Both of rigid body and fluid domain are modeled by SPH formulation. The proposed source term in the pressure Poisson equation contains two terms; divergence of velocity and density invariance. The density invariance term is multiplied by a relaxed parameter for stabilization. In addition, large eddy simulation with Smagorinsky model has been introduced to include the eddy viscosity effect. The improved method is applied to simulate both of free falling vessels with different materials and water entry-exit of horizontal circular cylinder. The applicability and efficiency of improved method is tested by the comparisons with reference experimental results.

  • In this work, the movement pattern of a floating breakwater is numerically analyzed using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic (SPH) method as a Lagrangian scheme. At the seaside, the regular incident waves with varying height and period were considered as the dynamic free surface boundary conditions. The smooth and impermeable beach slope was defined as the bottom boundary condition. The effects of various boundary conditions such as incident wave characteristics, beach slope, and water depth on the movement of the floating body were studied. The numerical results are in good agreement with the available experimental data in the literature The results of the movement of the floating body were used to determine the transmitted wave height at the corresponding boundary conditions.

  • The formulation of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and a shortcoming of traditional SPH in contact simulation are presented. A contact algorithm is proposed to treat contact phenomenon between two objects. We describe the boundary of the objects with non-mass artificial particles and set vectors normal to the contact surface. Contact criterion using non-mass particles is established in this study. In order to verify the contact algorithm, an algorithm is implemented in to an in-house program; elastic wave propagation is an analysed under low velocity axial impact of two rods. The results show that the contact algorithm eliminates the undesirable phenomena at the contact surface; numerical result with the contact algorithm is compared with theoretical one.

  • SPH is the shorthand for Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics. This method is a Lagrangian method which means that it involves following the motion of elements of fluid. These elements have the characteristics of particles and the method is called a particle method. A useful review of SPH (Monaghan 1992) gives the basic technique and how it can be applied to numerous problems relevant to astrophysics. You can get some basic SPH programs from http) /www.maths.monash.edu.au/jjm/sphlect In the present lecture I will assume that the student has studied this review and therefore understands the basic principles. In today's lecture I plan to approach the equations from a different perspective by using a variational principle.

  • The evolution of the stellar debris after tidal disruption due to the super massive black hole's tidal force is difficult to solve numerically because of the large dynamical range of the problem. We developed an SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) - TVD (Total Variation Diminishing) hybrid code in which the SPH is used to cover a widely spread debris and the TVD is used to compute the stream collision more accurately. While the code in the present form is not sufficient to obtain desired resoultion, it could provide a useful tool in studying the aftermath of the stellar disruption by a massive black hole.

  • There is few research about contact problem for a rigid surface with an arbitrary shape in SPH. The variational equation based on the virtual work principle is derived and its solution is obtained by the penalty method. It is proposed a new method that can determine the parameters for a penetration and a penetration rate used in the penalty method. The reproducing condition is adopted to correct the deficiency of kernel on the boundary. In order to calculate a penetration of particles, after checking boundary particles for deformable body boundary normal vectors were determined on the rigid surface. Numerical simulations for models which have rigid surface with an arbitrary shape were conducted to validate the proposed method in 2D. The results of those analysis represent that the contact algorithm proposed in this study works properly.
