Self-Organizing Middleware Platform Based on Overlay Network for Real-Time Transmission of Mobile Patients Vital Signal Stream (이동 환자 생체신호의 실시간 전달을 위한 오버레이 네트워크 기반 자율군집형 미들웨어 플랫폼)

  • To transmit vital signal stream of mobile patients remotely, it requires mobility of patient and watcher, sensing function of patient's abnormal symptom and self-organizing service binding of related computing resources. In the existing relative researches, the vital signal stream is transmitted as a centralized approach which exposure the single point of failure itself and incur data traffic to central server although it is localized service. Self-organizing middleware platform based on heterogenous overlay network is a middleware platform which can transmit real-time data from sensor device(including vital signal measure devices) to Smartphone, TV, PC and external system through overlay network applied self-organizing mechanism. It can transmit and save vital signal stream from sensor device autonomically without arbitration of management server and several receiving devices can simultaneously receive and display through interaction of nodes in real-time.

Characterization of Microbial Community in the Leachate Associated with the Decomposition of Entombed Pigs

  • Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is one of the acute infectious diseases in hoofed and even-toed mammals, including pigs, and it occurs via acute infection by Aphthovirus. When FMD is suspected, animals around the location of origin are typically slaughtered and buried. Other methods such as rendering, composting, and incineration have not been verified in practice in Korea. After the FMD incident, the regular monitoring of the microbial community is required, as microorganisms greatly modify the characteristics of the ecosystem in which they live. This is the result of their metabolic activities causing chemical changes to take place in the surrounding environment. In this study, we investigated changes in the microbial community during a 24 week period with DNA extracts from leachate, formed by the decomposition of buried pigs at a laboratory test site, using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) with a genomic DNA. Our results revealed that Bacteroides coprosuis, which is common in pig excreta, and Sporanaerobacter acetigenes, which is a sulfur-reduced microbe, were continuously observed. During the early stages (0~2 weeks) of tissue decomposition, Clostridium cochlearium, Fusobacterium ulcerans, and Fusobacterium sp., which are involved in skin decomposition, were also observed. In addition, various microbes such as Turicibacter sanguinis, Clostridium haemolyticum, Bacteroides propionicifaciens, and Comamonas sp. were seen during the later stages (16~24 weeks). In particular, the number of existing microbial species gradually increased during the early stages, including the exponential phase, decreased during the middle stages, and then increased again during the later stages. Therefore, these results indicate that the decomposition of pigs continues for a long period of time and leachate is created continuously during this process. It is known that leachate can easily flow into the neighboring environment, so a long-term management plan is needed in burial locations for FMD-infected animals.

Response of Colletotrichum sup. Causing Red Pepper Anthracnose to Protective and Ergosterol Biosynthesis-inhibiting Fungicides (보호용 살균제와 ergosterol 생합성 저해 살균제에 대한 고추 탄저병균의 약제 반응)

  • In 1999 and 2002, 130 and 258 isolates of Colletotrichum spp. causing red pepper anthracnose were obtained from infected red pepper fruits, respectively. Their responses to 4 protective and 3 ergosterol biosynthesis-inhibiting(EBI) fungicides were investigated by observing their mycelial growth on PDA incorporated with different concentrations of each fungicide. The Colletotrichum isolates obtained in 1999 showed higher $EC_{50}$ values than those isolated in 2002 against three protective fungicides such as dithianon, chlorothalonil, and propineb, whereas the response was reversed toward other protective fungicide, iminoctadine. On the other hand, the isolates of year 1999 were more resistant against three EBI fungicides such as tebuconazole, hexaconazole, and prochloraz than those of year 2002; the $EC_{50}$ values of the former were 1.2-4.4 times higher than those of the latter, The responses of the Colletotrichum isolates toward protective and EBI fungicides were fluctuated according to regions, where the infected fruits were collected. On the other hand, the resis tance of Colletotrichum isolates to protective fungicides increased during monitoring from July to September, However, their responses towards EBI fungicides were not changed.

Behavioural Analysis of Asiatic Black Bear in Limited Space (제한된 공간에서 반달가슴곰의 행동학적 특성 분석)

  • This study was conducted for behavioral characteristic analysis of the Asiatic Black Bear in a limited space. Behaviors of eight Asiatic Black Bears were classified into 13 normal stances and locomotor activities, 15 normal maintenance behaviors, 9 locomotory compulsive behaviors, 2 non-locomotory compulsive behaviors through the 3 years of monitoring. The bears had originally been released into the Jiri National Park for Asiatic Black Bear Restoration Project and were withdrawn again because of several reasons such as habituation to humans, and apiary damage. Through the monitoring of 6 hours per day during 3 months, classified behaviors were analyzed based on sex, age, observing month, observing timing, captivity period, and captive form. The total rate of stereotypic behaviors was $26.51{\pm}13.38%$. Among these, RA(Rest_A) was rated high as $47.32{\pm}18.32%$. In addition, SP(Standard pace), HR(Head rear), EP(Extended pace) were most frequently observed behaviors. The time budget of TFS(Two feet stand), SA(Sniff_A) and SB(Sniff_B) on females and younger individuals were relatively higher than male and older individuals. So we confirmed that females and younger individuals had more wariness and curiosity. As the period of captivity took longer, the rate of stereotypic behaviors was higher and more stereotypic behaviors were observed in the afternoon. At night, behaviors related with resting like Rest-A, Rest-B, Lying down, Lying on abdomen, Sitting were more frequently observed. We concluded that the captive state could affect the behaviors of Asiatic Black Bear and long term research should be necessary.

Monitoring on Fermentation of Persimmon Vinegar from Persimmon Peel (감껍질을 이용한 감식초 발효조건 모니터링)

  • In order to investigate utilization possibility of persimmon peel as a source of vinegar, we had been examined the alcohol and acetic acid fermentations of persimmon peel. In the first stage, alcohol fermentation, alcohol content was maximum value (8.22%) in 12.43 mL/g of added water, $12.41^{\circ}Brix$ of initial sugar content and 48.05 hr of fermentation time. Acidity was minimum value (0.30%) in 12.18 mL/g of added water, $13.72^{\circ}Brix$ of initial sugar content and 46.22 hr of fermentation time. In the second stage, acetic acid fermentation, acidity was maximum value (6.40%) in 2.02% of initial acidity, 67.98 rpm of agitation rate and 6.94 day of fermentation time. Browning color was minimum value in 1.50% of initial acidity, 150.0 rpm of agitation rate and 6.0 day of fermentation time. To manufacture persimmon vinegar using persimmon peel, in the first stage, optimal alcohol fermentation conditions was 12mL/g in added water, $12^{\circ}Brix$ in initial sugar concentration and 48 hr in fermentation time. In the second stage, optimal acetic acid fermentation conditions was 1.8% in initial acidity, 70 rpm in agitation rate and 6 day in fermentation time using Acetobacter sp. PA97.

  • Acoustic emission-based techniques are being used for the nondestructive inspection of mechanical systems used in service. For reliable fault monitoring related to the crack growth, it is important to identify the dynamical characteristics as well as transient crack-related signals. Widely used methods which are based on physical phenomena of the three damage stages for detecting the crack growth have a problem that crack-related acoustic emission activities overlap in time, therefore it is insufficient to estimate the exact crack growth time. The proposed pattern recognition method uses the dynamical characteristics of acoustic emission as inputs for minimizing false alarms and miss alarms and performs the temporal clustering to estimate the crack growth time accurately. Experimental results show that the proposed method is effective for practical use because of its robustness to changes of acoustic emission caused by changes of pressure levels.

  • Dual-channel Radiometers for Earth and Atmosphere Monitoring (DREAM) is the Korean first spaceborne microwave radiometer which is the main payload of Science and Technology SATellite-2 (STSAT-2). STSAT-2 will be launched by Korea Space Launch Vehicle-l (KSL V-I) at NARO Space Center in Korea in 2007. DREAM is a two-channel, total power microwave radiometer with the center frequencies of 23.8 GHz and 37 GHz. The spaceborne radiometer is composed of an antenna unit, a receiver unit, and a data acquisition/processing unit. The bandwidths of radiometer are 600 MHz at 23.8 GHz and 1000 MHz at 37 GHz. The integration time of two channels is 200 rns. The sensitivity of DREAM is less than 0.5 K. This paper presents the required performance and system design of DREAM in detail.

A Study on the Concentration and Characteristics of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococci in the Indoor Air of Childcare Facilities (일부 어린이집의 실내공기 중 메치실린내성 포도알균의 오염 실태 및 특성)

  • Objectives: This study aims to understand the concentration, diversity, and antibiotic characteristics of staphylococci present in the indoor air of child-care facilities. Methods: Air sampling was performed from October 2012 to January 2013 in 120 child-care facilities in Seoul, Korea. Methicillin-resistant bacteria were selected from the total obtained airborne bacteria and subjected to 16S rRNA analysis for methicillin-resistant staphylococcal species determination. Identified staphylococcal strains were tested for resistance to a range of antibiotics. Results: Average total airborne bacterial concentration was $508.9{\pm}246.3CFU/m^3$. Indoor concentration of total airborne bacteria had a significant positive correlation with the $CO_2$ concentration in the child-care facilities. Methicillin-resistant staphylococci were present in 13.3% of the child-care facilities studied. A total of four species (S. epidermidis, S. cohnii, S. saprophyticus, S. sp.) and 55 strains were identified from the indoor air of the child-care facilities. Staphylococcus cohnii was the most common species (54.5%), followed by S. epidermidis (38.2%). All of the isolated staphylococcal strains exhibited high resistance to oxacillin, erythromycin, mupirocin, and ceftizoxime. Especially, S. saprophyticus strains showed more multidrug resistance to oxacillin, vancomycin, clindamycin, erythromycin, lincomycin, ceftizoxime, mupirocin, and tetracycline than did other species. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that a monitoring system for multidrug-resistant bacteria is needed in facilities for children, as the community-associated infections of these bacteria are increasing.

Monitoring of Microbial Diversity and Activity During Bioremediation of Crude Oil-Contaminated Soil with Different Treatments

  • The present study compared the microbial diversity and activity during the application of various bioremediation processes to crude oil-contaminated soil. Five different treatments, including natural attenuation (NA), biostimulation (BS), biosurfactant addition (BE), bioaugmentation (BA), and a combined treatment (CT) of biostimulation, biosurfactant addition, and bioaugmentation, were used to analyze the degradation rate and microbial communities. After 120 days, the level of remaining hydrocarbons after all the treatments was similar, however, the highest rate (k) of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) degradation was observed with the CT treatment (P<0.05). The total bacterial counts increased during the first 2 weeks with all the treatments, and then remained stable. The bacterial communities and alkane monooxygenase gene fragment, alkB, were compared by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). The DGGE analyses of the BA and CT treatments, which included Nocardia sp. H17-1, revealed a simple dominant population structure, compared with the other treatments. The Shannon-Weaver diversity index (H') and Simpson dominance index (D), calculated from the DGGE profiles using 16S rDNA, showed considerable qualitative differences in the community structure before and after the bioremediation treatment as well as between treatment conditions.

Monitoring the Ecology of Bacillus During Daqu Incubation, a Fermentation Starter, Using Culture-Dependent and Culture-Independent Methods

  • Daqu, a traditional fermentation starter, has been used to produce attractively flavored foods such as vinegar and Chinese liquor for thousands of years. Although Bacillus spp. are one of the dominant microorganisms in Daqu, more precise information is needed to reveal why and how Bacillus became dominant in Daqu, and next, to assess the impact of Bacillus sp. on Daqu and its derived products. We combined culture-dependent and culture-independent methods to study the ecology of Bacillus during Daqu incubation. Throughout the incubation, 67 presumptive Bacillus spp. isolates were obtained, 52 of which were confirmed by 16S rDNA sequencing. The identified organisms belonged to 8 Bacillus species: B. licheniformis, B. subtilis, B. amyloliquefaciens, B. cereus, B. circulans, B. megaterium, B. pumilus, and B. anthracis. A primer set specific for Bacillus and related genera was used in a selective PCR study, followed by a nested DGGE PCR targeting the V9 region of the 16S rDNA. Species identified from the PCR-DGGE fingerprints were related to B. licheniformis, B. subtilis, B. amyloliquefaciens, B. pumilus, B. benzoevorans, and B. foraminis. The predominant species was found to be B. licheniformis. Certain B. licheniformis strains exhibited potent antimicrobial activities. The greatest species diversity occurred at the Liangmei stage of Daqu incubation. To date, we lack sufficient knowledge of Bacillus distribution in Daqu. Elucidating the ecology of Bacillus during Daqu incubation would enable the impact of Bacillus on Daqu to be accessed, and the quality and stabilization of Daqu-derived products to be optimized.
