In this study, compaction evaluating program based on ASTM critria is developed bu analyzing the results of laboratory tests. And the laboratory tests such as compaction test, triaxial test and resonance column test of subgrade soils are performed to develop compaction management methodology at seven test sites. Especially, to figure out chararteristic with changing compactive efforts, the test was carried out at five levels of compactive efforts at each soil sample. Database was set up from the test results. With the methodology using mechanical property - the elastic modulus, the gap between road design and management and road construction management is narrowed. The regression equation of G/$G_{max}$ is proposed at each strain level of subgrade soils according to AASHTO criteria, and the relationship between fundamental properties of soil mass and degree of compaction is derived as well. The development of compaction management and field compaction management method is proposed by the elastic modulus based on mechanical tests.
With an increasing demand of timber production, the use of heavy machinery in forest management has significantly increased, causing the changes of soil physical properties and the decline of long-term site productivity. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of logging slash (non-slash, slash $7.3kg/m^2$, and slash $11.5kg/m^2$) and machine passes(harvester 1 pass and forwarder 1 to 10 passes) on soil physical properties at 10 cm, 20 cm and 30 cm soil depths in harvester and forwarder operations and also to estimate the degree of soil surface disturbance. The results indicated that soil bulk density in the non-slash treatment site increased 10 %~29 % (25~139 % in soil penetration resistance) at all soil depths, compared with the slash treatment site(slash $11.5kg/m^2$). Therefore, the creation of a slash mat could be an effective way to minimize the changes of soil physical properties. In addition, 92 % of total soil compaction in slash treatment site was created within harvester 1 pass and forwarder 5 passes. In non-slash treatment site, 84 % of total soil compaction was created within first harvester and forwarder passes. The results showed that slash treatment was effective to reduce soil compaction caused by machine passes and also it is necessary to create designed forwarding trails for minimizing soil compaction area at timber harvesting sites.

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the compaction and compressive strength of polypropylene fiber reinforced soils. This study has been performed to obtain the physical properties of PFRS(polypropylene fiber reinforced soil) such as strain-stress relationships, OMC(optimum moisture contents) and ${\gamma}$$_{dmax}$ (maximum dry unit weight), with four different concentrations(i.e., 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5% and 1.0% weights) of mono-filament and fibrillated polypropylene fibers. The test results indicate an appreciable increase in strength due to addition of fibers. OMC is increased with the concentration ratio of fiber, but ${\gamma}$$_{dmax}$ is decreased. From the viewpoint of strength, the fibrillated polypropylene fiber soil is more effective than the mono-filament polypropylene fiber soil.oil.
In this paper stability about lateral soil movement of bridge abutment constructed on the soft ground, reinforced with the sand compaction pile (SCP) and the preconsolidaton methods, was evaluated by using the centrifuge testing facility which stress conditions in field could be reconstructed in the laboratory. The layouts of model such as ground condition, sand compaction piles and abutment was determined on the basis of similitude law with the reduced scale of 1/200. Construction sequences of installing SCP, preparing reclaimed ground, preconsolidating ground and building the piled bridge abutment were reconstructed during centrifuge modelling and measurements of movement were followed in each sequence. From analyzing the results of measuring movements of the model abutment and the ground, measured lateral movement of model abutment was found to be within the allowable value so that stability of abutment against lateral sliding was secured.

For the cultivation of big agricultral areas high performance machinery is needed. The need to increase working productivity also leads to powerful machinery. The total weight of new tractor generations increases and with it their axle and wheel weight reaches a soil damaging extend. Besides carrying the mass of the tractors and harvesting-machines the chassis must transmit driving force onto the ground(Tab. 1). To decrease soil damaging compaction a number of technical solutions have been developed. Broad tyres are being used to minimize the contact-area pressure by using low tyre air pressure. For enlarging the contact area there are two-possibilities : to build a brought or a long contact area. done for instance in caterpillar tracks.
The present study evaluates geocell reinforced slope behavior. A three dimensional analysis is carried out to simulate soil and geocell elastoplastic behavior using the finite difference software FLAC3D. In order to investigate the geocell reinforcement effect, the geocell aperture size, thickness, geocell placement condition and soil compaction had been considered as variable parameters. Moreover, a comparison is evaluated between geocell reinforcing system and conventional planar reinforcement. The obtained results showed that the pocket size, thickness and soil compaction have considerable influence on the geocell reinforcement slope performance. Moreover, it was found that the critical sliding surface was bounded by the first geocell reinforcement and the slope stability increases, by increasing the vertical space between geocell layers. In addition, the comparison between geocell and geogrid reinforcement indicates the efficiency of using cellular honeycomb geosynthetic reinforcement.
This study was conducted to solve the problem such as damage of completed compaction ground using the conventional compaction control method. In this study, a TDR system equipped with a flat type probe has been developed. Also, the Piezoelectric stack, which is an instrument for measuring the elastic wave on the ground, has been added to the developed flat type probe. In this study, the strength variation of reinforced soil with time was determined by using the TDR system. The value of compression and shear modulus increased from 198.65MPa to 541.80MPa and from 125.55MPa to 302.02MPa with time, respectively. Based on the test results, it has been confirmed that the developed TDR system can be used as reinforced effect analysis of soil and compaction control.

Lime stabilization has conventionally been listed amid the key techniques of chemical stabilization. Replacing lime with sustainable agro-based by-products have gained prominence in recent decades. Bagasse ash (BA) is one such potential alternatives, an industrial waste with abundance in production, and industries exploring sustainable solutions for its safe disposal. Supplementing BA with lime could be an ideal approach to reduce lime consumption. However, suitability of BA and lime for the stabilization of expansive clays, such as black cotton (BC) soil is yet to be explored. This paper therefore aims to investigate the suitability of BA-lime mixtures to stabilize BC soil with emphasis to compaction behaviors and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) using standard laboratory procedures. Suitability of BA-lime mixture is then assessed against addition of calcium sulphate which, from previous experience, is detrimental with lime stabilization. Experimental outcomes nominate 15% BA as the optimum value observed from both compaction and UCS data, while addition of 4% lime to 15% BA showed the best results. Mineralogical and microstructural analysis show the presence of cementitious compounds with addition of lime and calcium sulphate with curing periods. While, formation of Ettringite needles were noted with the addition of calcium sulphate in BA-lime mixtures (at optimum values) after 90-day curing, and UCS results showed a decrease at this point. To this end, addition of BA in lime stabilization showed encouraging results as assessed from the compaction and UCS results. Nonetheless usage of calcium salts, with utmost emphasis on calcium sulphate and equivalent should be avoided.
This research was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of reinforcement for nearly saturated soft clay compaction. The effectiveness was investigated by roller compaction test using nearly saturated clay specimens. The nearly saturated condition was obtained by submerging clay in the water for 12 hours. High water content specimens were compacted in plane strain condition by a steel roller. A specimen was compacted by four 5 cm horizontal layers. Specimens were prepared fur both reinforced and unreinforced cases to evaluate the effectiveness of reinforcement. Used reinforcement is a composite consisted of both woven and non-woven geotextile. The composite usually provides drainage and tensile reinforcement to hi인 water-contented clay so that it increases bearing capacity. Therefore, large compaction load can be applied to reinforced clay and it achieves higher density effectively. The reinforcement also increases compaction efficiency because it reduces the ratio between shear and vertical forces during compaction process. The maximum vertical stress on the base of specimen usually decreased with higher compaction thickness. The reinforcement increases soil stiffness under the compaction roller and it initiates stress concentration. As a result, it maintains higher vertical stress level on the base of specimen that provides better compaction characteristics. Based on test results, it can be concluded that the reinforcement is essential to achieve effective compaction on soft clay.

Among soft ground treatment methods with granular soil used in domestic, the sand compaction pile method has been utilized greatly, but, as a result of exhaustion of sand and increase of unit cost, a necessity of an alternative method is suggested. In this study, the static load tests for group crushed-stone compaction piles which were constructed at in-situ site were performed. Pile diameter was 700mm and area of loading plates were changed. The static load tests of single and group piles were performed for area replacement ratio of 20, 30 and 40%. Based on test results, bearing capacity of group crushed-stone compaction pile were estimated. The more both single pile and group pile increase, the more yield bearing capacity tended to increase. Also, the yield bearing capacity of a group pile is about 50% less than the yield bearing capacity of a single pile. If the ground reinforced with the crushed-stone compaction pile is replacement ratio of $20{\sim}40%$, RIYB of both single pile and group pile increases qualitative tendency of linear more than original ground
